Surface impedance measurements on Nb3_{3}Sn at high magnetic fields

Nb3_{3}Sn is a superconductor of great relevance for perspective RF applications. We present for the first time surface impedance ZsZ_s measurements at 15 GHz and low RF field amplitude on Nb3_{3}Sn in high magnetic fields up to 12 T, with the aim of increasing the knowledge of Nb3_{3}Sn behavior in such conditions. ZsZ_s is a fundamental material parameter that directly gives useful information about the dissipative and reactive phenomena when the superconductor is subjected to high-frequency excitations. Therefore, we present an analysis of the measured ZsZ_s with the aim of extracting interesting data about pinning in Nb3_{3}Sn at high frequencies. From ZsZ_s we extract the vortex motion complex resistivity to obtain the rr-parameter and the depinning frequency νp\nu_p in high magnetic fields. The comparison of the results with the literature shows that the measured νp\nu_p on bulk Nb3_{3}Sn is several times greater than that of pure Nb. This demonstrates how Nb3_{3}Sn can be a good candidate for RF technological applications, also in high magnetic fields.Comment: ASC 2018 conference, accepted in IEEE Trans Appl Supercon

(s)INE: (soft-graft)-induced new entry tear after elephant trunk procedure

: Elephant trunk and frozen elephant trunk are established procedures for the treatment of aortic arch pathologies, such as aneurysm or dissection. The aim of open surgery is to re-expand the true lumen, favouring correct organ perfusion and the thrombosis of the false lumen. Frozen elephant trunk, with its stented endovascular portion, is sometimes associated with a life-threatening complication: the stent graft-induced new entry. In the literature, many studies reported the incidence of such issue after thoracic endovascular prosthesis or frozen elephant trunk, but in our knowledge, there are no case studies about the occurrence of stent graft-induced new entry with the use of soft grafts. For this reason, we decided to report our experience, highlighting how the use of a Dacron graft can cause distal intimal tears. We decided to coin the term soft-graft-induced new entry to indicate the development of an intimal tear induced by the soft prosthesis in the arch and proximal descending aorta

Microwave measurements of the high magnetic field vortex motion pinning parameters in Nb3_3Sn

The high frequency vortex motion in Nb3_3Sn was analyzed in this work up to 12 T. We used a dielectric loaded resonator tuned at 15 GHz to evaluate the surface impedance ZZ of a Nb3_3Sn bulk sample (24.8 at.\%Sn). From the field induced variation of ZZ, the high frequency vortex parameters (the pinning constant kpk_p, the depinning frequency νp\nu_p and the flux flow resistivity ρff\rho_{ff}) were obtained over a large temperature and field range; their field and temperature dependence were analyzed. Comparison with other superconducting materials shows that high frequency applications in strong magnetic fields are also feasible with Nb3_3Sn. In the present work, we report the first measurements about the microwave response in Nb3_3Sn in strong magnetic fields.Comment: 24 pages, 12 figure

Botanical memory: five centuries of floristic changes revealed by a Renaissance herbarium (Ulisse Aldrovandi, 1551-1586)

We analysed the spatially explicit floristic information available in the herbarium of Ulisse Aldrovandi (1551-1586) to track floristic changes in the surroundings of Bologna across five centuries. Aldrovandi's data were compared with the Flora della Provincia di Bologna by Girolamo Cocconi (1883) and the Floristic Database of Emilia-Romagna (1965-2021). We explored potential variations in native range and life forms composition, and habitat affinity of the species in the three floras, also contrasting between native and alien species. Native species, mainly in terms of variations of hydro-hygrophytes, chamaephytes and therophytes, provide clear signals of human disturbance and habitat loss. Signals of climate change are provided by the high-mountain species, that were comparably rare between Aldrovandi and current flora and more represented in Cocconi, probably reflecting the effect of the Little Ice Age. Our findings also indicate the increasing importance of alien species from the Renaissance onwards. In this perspective, Aldrovandi's herbarium preserves the memory of the first signs of a radical transformation of the European flora and habitats. Finally, the study warns about the risk of dismissing herbaria and herbarium specimens collection, which would cause irreparable lacunas in our botanical memory, hindering our ability to predict biodiversity trajectories
