    Quality Estimation of Machine Translated Texts based on Direct Evidence from Training Data

    Current Machine Translation systems achieve very good results on a growing variety of language pairs and data sets. However, it is now well known that they produce fluent translation outputs that often can contain important meaning errors. Quality Estimation task deals with the estimation of quality of translations produced by a Machine Translation system without depending on Reference Translations. A number of approaches have been suggested over the years. In this paper we show that the parallel corpus used as training data for training the MT system holds direct clues for estimating the quality of translations produced by the MT system. Our experiments show that this simple and direct method holds promise for quality estimation of translations produced by any purely data driven machine translation system

    Laparoscopic management of ileal endometriosis: presented as sub-acute intestinal obstruction

    Patients with bowel endometriosis will usually experience a long delay in getting diagnosed as the physician will always think of other medical conditions related to bowel before considering the possibility of endometriosis. Imaging studies are not sensitive enough for definite diagnosis. Bowel endometriosis can be treated by either hormone therapy or surgical therapy. Surgery should be considered in selected patients, who have severe stenosis of intestinal lumen resulting in obstruction. Small bowel endometriosis may not be accompanied by pelvic endometriosis. When the disease involves the jejunum or the ileum, it usually has a benign course, but in rare circumstances may present as an acute abdomen. Ileal endometriosis should be carefully considered in the differential diagnosis of Crohn’s disease, because bowel endometriosis frequently produces local inflammation, adhesions, stricture and angulation. A segmental bowel resection may be required to completely treat their disease. The role of postoperative administration of gonadotropin releasing hormone analogues (GnRH) to prevent disease recurrence or increase symptom free interval is not well established

    Electron paramagnetic resonance evidence for Jahn-Teller glasses

    Single crystal E.P.R. studies of copper as a dopant in lithium potassium sulphate, lithium ammonium sulphate and lithium sodium sulphate have been carried out from room temperature down to 77K. The three Jahn-Teller (JT) systems behave very similarly to one another. The room temperature dynamic JT spectra with giso = 2.19 ± 0.01 and Aiso = ±(33 ± 4)× 10-4 cm-1 transform around 247 K to spectra characterized by randomly frozen-in axial strains with g = 2.4307 ± 0.0005, g = 2.083 ± 0.001, A = ±(116 ± 2) × 10-4 cm-1 and A = ±(14 ± 4) ×10-4 cm-1. We proposed that the low temperature phase (below 247 K) of each of these systems provides an example of a Jahn-Teller glass

    ENHANCEMENT OF BIOAVAILABILITY OF GLIPIZIDE USING SOLID DISPERSIONS WITH GUM AEGLE MARMELOS

    Objective: The aim of the proposed study was formulation and in vitro/ vivo evolution   of solid dispersions of glipizide with gum Aegle marmelos. Methods: The phase solubility of glipizide in 0.1N HCl was investigated in the presence of different concentrations of gum Aegle marmelos. The solid dispersions (SDs) of glipizide with gum Aegle marmelos were formulated using solvent evaporation method at ratios of 1:1, 1:2, and 1:5 (glipizide: gum Aegle marmelos). Dissolution studies were conducted. The physicochemical characterization of the formulations was performed by using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Subsequently, bioavailability of pure glipizide, solid dispersion and marketed product was performed in rat. Results: Glipizide solubility increased as the concentration of gum Aegle marmelos in 0.1N HCl was raised. The solubility study indicates spontaneous drug solubilization, which is supported by negative values of Gibb's free energy (ΔGotr). Glipizide rate of dissolution was increased in SDs containing gum, and the rate increased as the concentration of gum in the SDs increases. After preparing SDs and physical mixtures with gum, the mean dissolution time (MDT) of glipizide decreases considerably. FTIR spectroscopy study revealed that stability and the absence of a well-defined glipizide-gum interaction. The amorphous condition of glipizide in SDs of glipizide with gum was revealed by DSC and XRD studies. Conclusion: The DSC and XRD studies indicate conversion of drug from crystalline to microcrystalline or amorphous form after formulation of solid dispersion with Aegle gum. The solid dispersion of glipizide with Aegle gum (893.04±25.5) showed better therapeutic activity compared to pure glipizide (535.65±11.5) and marketed formulation (767.5±13.6)

    Stability of Vertical Throughflow of a Power Law Fluid in Double Diffusive Convection in a Porous Channel

    The instability of non-Newtonian power law fluid in double diffusive convection in a porous medium with vertical throughflow is investigated. The lower and upper boundaries are taken to be permeable, isothermal and isosolutal. For vertical throughflow the linear stability of flow is determined by the power law index (n), non-Newtonian Rayleigh number (Ra), Buoyancy ratio (N), Péclet number (Pe) and Lewis number (Le). The eigenvalue problem is solved by two-term Galerkin approximation to obtain the critical value of Rayleigh number and neutral stability curves. It is observed that the neutral stability curves, as well as the critical wave number and Rayleigh number, are affected by the parameters such as Péclet number, buoyancy ratio and Lewis number. The neutral stability curves indicate that power law index n has destabilizing nature when it takes values for dilatant fluid at low Péclet numbers while for the pseudoplastic fluids it shows stabilizing effect. In the absence of buoyancy ratio and vertical throughflow, the present numerical results coincide with the solution of standard Horton-Rogers-Lapwood Problem. The numerical analysis of linear stability for the limiting case of absolute pseudoplasticity is also done by using Galerkin method

    STANDARDIZATION OF BALAMULA CHURNA (SIDA CORDIFOLIA L. ROOT POWDER)

    Objective: In this study, an attempt was made to generate information based on, physicochemical parameter preliminary phytochemical screening and HPTLC data needed for proper identification and authentication of Balamula Churna. Methods: The physicochemical parameters such as water-soluble extractive, alcohol soluble extractive and loss on drying at 105 °C, total ash and acid insoluble ash were determined according to standard methods. HPTLC studies were conducted and Rf values were documented. Results: Physicochemical parameter value were documented as pH (6.81%), LOD (7.5%), water-soluble extractive value (6.32%), alcohol soluble extractive value (5.92%) total Ash (9.00%) and Acid Insoluble Ash (1.60%). Preliminary phytochemical screening reveals the presence of glycoside, alkaloid, carbohydrate, phenol, flavonoid and saponin. HPTLC screening showed the presence of significant phytoconstituents with Rf value 0.02, 0.27, 0.34 and 0.96. Conclusion: All the results obtained from this study can be helpful in evaluation quality, detection of adulteration and substitution and emphasizing the importance of standardization

    Parametric study to mitigate fretting fatigue in dovetail joint of aeroengine compressor

    Fretting fatigue is most likely to occur in the dovetail joint of aero engine compressor resulting in small amplitude displacement of a few micrometers. This leads to degradation of the material in the form of fatigue strength and corrosion. This paper reports optimal conditions of blade geometrical parameters such as flank length, flank angle and coefficient of friction in order minimize the failure due to fretting fatigue. ANOVA indicated that Von-mises stresses, deformation, contact pressure and sliding distance were influenced by coefficient of friction and flank angle. While deformation, contact pressure and sliding distance decreased with increase in coefficient of friction and increased with increase in flank angle and flank length. Von-mises stress increased with increase in coefficient of friction. Response surface methodology results indicated that the optimum value of Von-mises stress (328.24 MPa), deformation (153.87 µm), contact pressure (275.48 MPa) and sliding distance (80.66 µm) were found at coefficient of friction 0.35, flank angle 65° and flank length of 12 mm which were in agreement with those of grey relational analysis results

    Assessing the burden of Covid-19 in the slums of Bangalore city: Results of Rapid Community Survey

    Background: Karnataka, more so Bangalore, reported an increase in number of COVID-19 cases in early April 2021. Objective: To assess the burden of COVID-19 in the slums of Bengaluru city. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional multi centre community-based study was done in the 2nd and 3rd week of April 2021 in 24 different slums in Bangalore city. WHO cluster random sampling technique was followed. Swabs for RTPCR test and 4 ml of venous blood was collected from 728 subjects more than 18 years of age. Results: A total of 51 (7%) subjects were positive for COVID-19 through RT-PCR. Majority 33 (56.9%) were in the age group of 18-44 years. 148 (20.3%) subjects were sero-positive on blood examination and 18-44 years was the (59.4%) preponderant age group. Overall seropositivity was 20.3% (95%CI; 17.4-23.2) and RT-PCR positivity is 7% (95%CI; 5.2-8.8%) among the subjects surveyed. In the inner core area of Bangalore, seropositivity was 24.2% (95%CI; 21.0 – 27.3) and RT-PCR positivity was 8% (95%CI; 6.1-9.9). Two doses of COVID-19 vaccine were taken only by 1.55% subjects during the study period. Conclusion: The study showed that one in 5 subjects were sero-positive to SARS-CoV-2 and one in 15 individuals had active COVID-19 infection
