Higgs with Hadronic Signatures
The decay of the Higgs boson to b quarks should be the dominant decay mode,
but it has not yet been conclusively established. The LHC run 1 results are
recalled and the current status of the LHC Run 2 studies is reviewed. The
analysis is approaching decisive sensitivity.Comment: 4 page Moriond QCD 2017 writeu
From Meal to Mission
(Excerpt)
When it comes to introductions, I remember that when I was young and charming and about to go off to Saint Joseph\u27s Prep in Philadelphia (where I was reared and raised), I was somewhat intimidated. I was so because I was about to take my place along with boys, many of whose fathers, uncles, cousins, and brothers had attended this school. For them the school was going to be familiar, for me most unfamiliar. Adding to my anxiety was the fact that I was also going to be one of 900 boys, only seven of whom were Black. I was a wreck and desperate to introduce myself wisely and well. In a conversation with my parents about proper introductions, one of my grandmothers happened upon the scene and offered some sage advice. She said, when it comes to introductions, when someone asks you who you are, tell \u27em you\u27re a child of God. That is the most important thing for each of you to remember about me, for it is the most important thing that you are to remember about yourself
Carter-Payne homomorphisms and branching rules for endomorphism rings of Specht modules
Let n be a positive integer and let p be a prime. Suppose that we take a
partition of n, and obtain another partition by moving a node from one row to a
shorther row. Carter and Payne showed that if the p-residue of the removed and
added positions is the same, then there is a non-zero homomorphism between the
corresponding Specht modules for the symmetric group of degree n, defined over
a field of characteristic p. In this paper we give a very simple description of
such a homomorphism, as a map between polytabloids, using the action of a
Murphy-Jucys element.
We also present a proof that in this context the homomorphism space is
1-dimensional. S. Lyle has already proved the more general result for
Iwahori-Hecke algebras. In the process we give a formula for the Carter-Payne
homomorphism as a linear combination of semi-standard homomorphisms. Our
methods allow us to compute a lower bound for where the image of this
homomorphism lies in the Jantzen filtration of the codomain Specht module.
As an application, we show that the endomorphism ring of the restriction of a
Specht module to the symmetric group of degree n-1 is an explicit direct
product of truncated polynomial rings. A. Kleshchev proved the analogous result
for the restriction of irreducible modules.Comment: 19 pages, submitte
Reconstructing diffusion fields sampled with a network of arbitrarily distributed sensors
Sensor networks are becoming increasingly prevalent for monitoring physical phenomena of interest. For such wireless sensor network applications, knowledge of node location is important. Although a uniform sensor distribution is common in the literature, it is normally difficult to achieve in reality. Thus we propose a robust algorithm for reconstructing two-dimensional diffusion fields, sampled with a network of arbitrarily placed sensors. The two-step method proposed here is based on source parameter estimation: in the first step, by properly combining the field sensed through well-chosen test functions, we show how Prony's method can reveal locations and intensities of the sources inducing the field. The second step then uses a modification of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality to estimate the activation time in the single source field. We combine these steps to give a multi-source field estimation algorithm and carry out extensive numerical simulations to evaluate its performance
Sonification of probabilistic feedback through granular synthesis
We describe a method to improve user feedback, specifically the display of time-varying probabilistic information, through asynchronous granular synthesis. We have applied these techniques to challenging control problems as well as to the sonification of online probabilistic gesture recognition. We're using these displays in mobile, gestural interfaces where visual display is often impractical
A critical perspective on heterodox production modeling
Production and distribution needs a proper place in heterodox economics. It has recently been suggested that the construction of production models needs to be empirically grounded. Also it has been stated that empirically grounded production models must be circular production models. This argument then marginalizes the contributions of important economists in heterodox thought. The paper will argue that heterodox production models need not be perfectly circular to make important contributions for heterodox production theory. Furthermore, it will be argued that models which consist of elements of hierarchial structures of production put emphasis on out of equilibrium traverse processes and historical time.Heterodox Economic Theory; Heterodox Price and Production Modeling
Graph Laplacians and Stabilization of Vehicle Formations
Control of vehicle formations has emerged as a topic of significant interest to the controls community. In this paper, we merge tools from graph theory and control theory to derive stability criteria for formation stabilization. The interconnection between vehicles (i.e., which vehicles are sensed by other vehicles) is modeled as a graph, and the eigenvalues of the Laplacian matrix of the graph are used in stating a Nyquist-like stability criterion for vehicle formations. The location of the Laplacian eigenvalues can be correlated to the graph structure, and therefore used to identify desirable and undesirable formation interconnection topologies
Space station structural dynamics/reaction control system interaction study
The performance of the Reaction Control System is impacted by the extreme flexibility of the space station structure. The method used to analyze the periodic thrust profile of a simple form of phase plane logic is presented. The results illustrate the effect on flexible body response of the type of phase plane logic utilized and the choice of control parameters: cycle period and attitude deadband
The Regional Benefits of the Employer of Last Resort Program
The Employer of Last Resort (ELR) program is a New Deal type of program to provide a government position for anyone seeking work. Unlike private industries who compete over prices and wages, the ELR “industry” is not meant to compete with the private sector; rather it provides public services that are not offered by the private sector. The task here is to estimate the private sector effects of the implementation of the ELR program for the State of Missouri.Employer of Last Resort; Input-output Modeling; Heterodox Microfoundations of Macroeconomics
