    Mortality, protoplasm decay rate, and reliability of staining techniques to recognise 'living' foraminifera: a review.

    Non-vital staining, especially with rose Bengal, has been widely used in ecological studies to differentiate between the tests of dead(unstained) foraminifera from those presumed to be living at the time of collection (stained). Doubts have been expressed about staining methods because of the possibility that dead individuals may retain undecayed protoplasm for weeks or months after death; when stained, such individuals would be recorded as living. To assess the importance of such false positives, it is necessary to examine rates of mortality, and the modes of generation of empty tests, i.e., whether due to reproduction, growth stages (leaving empty tests during growth) or death. It can be argued that reproduction, ontogeny, and death through predation lead to tests devoid of protoplasm. Whereas reproduction may affect only a small proportion of the population of each species (due to high pre-reproductive mortality), predation in oxygenated environments may be responsible for the major part of that pre-reproductive mortality. In oxygenated environments, disease or adverse environmental conditions are most likely to lead to dead individuals having tests containing protoplasm. In dysaerobic/anoxic environments, predation by macrofauna may be excluded, so foraminifera die through other causes and thus more tests with dead protoplasm may be potentially available for staining. Therefore, for most other environments, the problem of staining dead individuals is almost certainly overstated. Furthermore, from comparative studies, it seems that the most commonly used technique (staining with rose Bengal) is as reliable as others. Now that new vital staining techniques, especially the use of fluorescent probes, are being introduced, it is timely for further objective comparative studies of all techniques to be made in order to evaluate data already gathered and to develop the best strategies for future ecological studies according to whether they are field-based or experimental

    The fading of two transient ultraluminous x-ray sources to below the stellar mass Eddington limit

    We report new detections of the two transient ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) in NGC 5128 from an ongoing series of Chandra observations. Both sources have previously been observed L (2-3) × ∼10 erg s, at the lower end of the ULX luminosity range. The new observations allow us to study these sources in the luminosity regime frequented by the Galactic black hole X-ray binaries (BH XBs). We present the recent lightcurves of both ULXs. 1RXH J132519.8-430312 (ULX1) was observed at L 1 × 10 erg s, while CXOU J132518.2-430304 (ULX2) declined to L 2 × 10 erg s and then lingered at this luminosity for hundreds of days. We show that a reasonable upper limit for both duty cycles is 0.2, with a lower limit of 0.12 for ULX2. This duty cycle is larger than anticipated for transient ULXs in old stellar populations. By fitting simple spectral models in an observation with ∼50 counts we recover properties consistent with Galactic BH XBs, but inconclusive as to the spectral state. We utilize quantile analyses to demonstrate that the spectra are generally soft, and that in one observation the spectrum of ULX2 is inconsistent with a canonical hard state at >95% confidence. This is contrary to what would be expected of an accreting intermediate mass black hole primary, which we would expect to be in the hard state at these luminosities. We discuss the paucity of transient ULXs discovered in early-type galaxies and excogitate explanations. We suggest that the number of transient ULXs scales with the giant and sub-giant populations, rather than the total number of XBs.Peer reviewe

    ‘Because it’s our culture!’ (Re)negotiating the meaning of lobola in Southern African secondary schools

    Payment of bridewealth or lobola is a significant element of marriage among the Basotho of Lesotho and the Shona of Zimbabwe. However, the functions and meanings attached to the practice are constantly changing. In order to gauge the interpretations attached to lobola by young people today, this paper analyses a series of focus group discussions conducted among senior students at two rural secondary schools. It compares the interpretations attached by the students to the practice of lobola with academic interpretations (both historical and contemporary). Among young people the meanings and functions of lobola are hotly contested, but differ markedly from those set out in the academic literature. While many students see lobola as a valued part of ‘African culture’, most also view it as a financial transaction which necessarily disadvantages women. The paper then seeks to explain the young people’s interpretations by reference to discourses of ‘equal rights’ and ‘culture’ prevalent in secondary schools. Young people make use of these discourses in (re)negotiating the meaning of lobola, but the limitations of the discourses restrict the interpretations of lobola available to them

    U(N) Instantons on N=1/2 superspace -- exact solution & geometry of moduli space

    We construct the exact solution of one (anti)instanton in N=1/2 super Yang-Mills theory defined on non(anti)commutative superspace. We first identify N = 1/2 superconformal invariance as maximal spacetime symmetry. For gauge group U(2), SU(2) part of the solution is given by the standard (anti)instanton, but U(1) field strength also turns out nonzero. The solution is SO(4) rotationally symmetric. For gauge group U(N), in contrast to the U(2) case, we show that the entire U(N) part of the solution is deformed by non(anti)commutativity and fermion zero-modes. The solution is no longer rotationally symmetric; it is polarized into an axially symmetric configuration because of the underlying non(anti)commutativity. We compute the `information metric' of one (anti) instanton. We find that moduli space geometry is deformed from hyperbolic space (Euclidean anti-de Sitter space) in a way anticipated from reduced spacetime symmetry. Remarkably, the volume measure of the moduli space turns out to be independent of the non(anti)commutativity.     Optical Spectra of SNR Candidates in NGC 300

    We present moderate-resolution (<5A) long-slit optical spectra of 51 nebular objects in the nearby Sculptor Group galaxy NGC 300 obtained with the 2.3 meter Advanced Technology Telescope at Siding Spring Observatory, Australia. Adopting the criterion of [SII]/Ha>=0.4 to confirm supernova remnants (SNRs) from optical spectra, we find that of 28 objects previously proposed as SNRs from optical observations, 22 meet this criterion with six showing [SII]/Ha of less than 0.4. Of 27 objects suggested as SNRs from radio data, four are associated with the 28 previously proposed SNRs. Of these four, three (included in the 22 above) meet the criterion. In all, 22 of the 51 nebular objects meet the [SII]/Ha criterion as SNRs while the nature of the remaining 29 objects remains undetermined by these observations.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space Scienc

    Genetic variants and blood pressure in a population-based cohort: the cardiovascular risk in young Finns study

    Clinical relevance of a genetic predisposition to elevated blood pressure was quantified during the transition from childhood to adulthood in a population-based Finnish cohort (N=2,357). Blood pressure was measured at baseline in 1980 (age 3–18 years) and in follow-ups in 1983, 1986, 2001 and 2007. Thirteen single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with blood pressure were genotyped and three genetic risk scores associated with systolic and diastolic blood pressure and their combination were derived for all participants. Effects of the genetic risk score were 0.47 mmHg for systolic and 0.53 mmHg for diastolic blood pressure (both p<0.01). The combination genetic risk score was associated with diastolic blood pressure from age 9 onwards (β=0.68 mmHg, p=0.015). Replications in 1194 participants of the Bogalusa Heart Study showed essentially similar results. The participants in the highest quintile of the combination genetic risk score had a 1.82-fold risk of hypertension in adulthood (p<0.0001) compared with the lowest quintile, independent of a family history of premature hypertension. These findings show that genetic variants are associated with preclinical blood pressure traits in childhood, individuals with several susceptibility alleles have on average a 0.5 mmHg higher blood pressure and this trajectory continues from childhood to adulthood

    Star Formation and Dynamics in the Galactic Centre

    The centre of our Galaxy is one of the most studied and yet enigmatic places in the Universe. At a distance of about 8 kpc from our Sun, the Galactic centre (GC) is the ideal environment to study the extreme processes that take place in the vicinity of a supermassive black hole (SMBH). Despite the hostile environment, several tens of early-type stars populate the central parsec of our Galaxy. A fraction of them lie in a thin ring with mild eccentricity and inner radius ~0.04 pc, while the S-stars, i.e. the ~30 stars closest to the SMBH (<0.04 pc), have randomly oriented and highly eccentric orbits. The formation of such early-type stars has been a puzzle for a long time: molecular clouds should be tidally disrupted by the SMBH before they can fragment into stars. We review the main scenarios proposed to explain the formation and the dynamical evolution of the early-type stars in the GC. In particular, we discuss the most popular in situ scenarios (accretion disc fragmentation and molecular cloud disruption) and migration scenarios (star cluster inspiral and Hills mechanism).     Phase Behavior of Type-II Superconductors with Quenched Point Pinning Disorder: A Phenomenological Proposal

    A general phenomenology for phase behaviour in the mixed phase of type-II superconductors with weak point pinning disorder is outlined. We propose that the ``Bragg glass'' phase generically transforms via two separate thermodynamic phase transitions into a disordered liquid on increasing the temperature. The first transition is into a glassy phase, topologically disordered at the largest length scales; current evidence suggests that it lacks the long-ranged phase correlations expected of a ``vortex glass''. This phase has a significant degree of short-ranged translational order, unlike the disordered liquid, but no quasi-long range order, in contrast to the Bragg glass. This glassy phase, which we call a ``multi-domain glass'', is confined to a narrow sliver at intermediate fields, but broadens out both for much larger and much smaller field values. The multi-domain glass may be a ``hexatic glass''; alternatively, its glassy properties may originate in the replica symmetry breaking envisaged in recent theories of the structural glass transition. Estimates for translational correlation lengths in the multi-domain glass indicate that they can be far larger than the interline spacing for weak disorder, suggesting a plausible mechanism by which signals of a two-step transition can be obscured. Calculations of the Bragg glass-multi-domain glass and the multi-domain glass-disordered liquid phase boundaries are presented and compared to experimental data.
