This study examines the prospects for growth in Rutherford County’s retailing and food services industry. In particular, the study estimates the potential for capturing Rutherford County spending that occurs in other counties, called ‘spending leakage’, and also estimates the potential for attracting spending from households in nearby counties. The first section examines comparative demographic and income trends as the basis for retail growth in Rutherford County, followed with a review of the importance of retailing and food services as a source of jobs and income for the county. The next section overviews retail growth trends for the county and for La Vergne, Smyrna, and Murfreesboro. An analysis of the county’s retail supply and demand balance is next, with attention to retail sectors that are under-supplied in Rutherford County. The potential for capturing household spending from nearby counties is discussed next, followed with a summary of retail development currently planned for the county. A final section offers conclusions.retail sales, retail leakage

A few wells were added to the list, usually because of their unique location in the sampling grid

NOTE: This is a large file, 81.4 mb in size! This article describes the use of an authentic regional planning public workshop activity which was modified and used to introduce the Earth surface portion of an Earth Science lecture course for undergraduate non-science majors. Students applied map-reading skills and learned about the local environment while forming opinions about how the region should grow, exploring the potential consequences of their preferences (for both developers and the environment), and making judgments about the relative importance of various environmental challenges and hazards. A participant survey showed that most supported the continued development and re-use of the activity, as well as the development of one to three additional three-lecture-period activities. Educational levels: Graduate or professional

    The Back Road to Murfreesboro

This project was conceived as a multi-form, multi-media piece in which each work of fiction, poetry, or photography is fully intended to both stand on its own and contribute to an overall feeling for the entire collection. It is in the juxtaposition of these various works that the audience can gain a greater appreciation for the entire collection as well as for each individual piece contained within. This collection explores the dissatisfaction and alienation of contemporary life, and depicts characters, objects, and settings that are all in some way disconnected or empty. The overall stance is negative, of frustrated desire, in the hope that it may serve as a warning call against what is shown

On June 27th, 1863, while camped at Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Nadine Turchin, wife of Brigadier General John Turchin of the Army of the Cumberland, wrote an irate entry in her journal. Really, I think that the commanding general should take me as his chief of staff, she began, or at least as his personal advisor. She went on to discuss the movements of her husband’s regiment as they campaigned in the west, criticizing the orders given to him by his superiors that had resulted in several deaths within the regiment and offering her own take on how they should have proceeded. Oh, uncivilized beasts! she concluded, in reference to the army’s leaders: They are dedicated to sacrificing this unfortunate army. [excerpt
