From the Heroides: Re-Centering Myth through Epistolary Form
In The Heroides, Ovid writes many poems formatted as epistles from jilted women in mythology to their respective lovers. But why letters and why not monologues? After looking at his poems for Penelope, Dido, Ariadne, Oenone, and Briseis, I argue that the epistolary format establishes the female voice and power and uses an important part of Roman culture to maintain contact. In this format, Ovid is re-centering the myths around women and making them the main characters of their myth. By doing so, Ovid forces the reader to reconsider the “heroes” and life for females
Filling Out Internment: The Need for Honouliuli\u27s Inclusion in Internment Studies
Opened in 1943, the Hononuliuli camp was the lone permanent internment camp during World War II for Japanese in Hawaii. Following its closure, the camp was lost in history and went unstudied for many years. In 1998, a news reporter opened the public’s eye to the camp and began a re-investigation of the camp. Using a former prisoner’s diary, other prisoners’ interviews and memories, this paper makes the case for Honouliuli’s inclusion in the greater internment corpus. By analyzing various factors of Honouliuli compared to the various camps in the continental United States, we can see similarities and differences. From the isolation of the prisoners, to the cultural practices that made camp home, many factors make the Japanese American internment camps an intriguing space. The story of Honouliuli does not fall neatly into the two dominant narratives of Japanese American internment, but instead complicates what it meant to be a Japanese American at the time
Spin-1/2 Triangular Lattice with Orbital Degeneracy in a Metallic Oxide Ag2NiO2
A novel metallic and magnetic transition metal oxide Ag2NiO2 is studied by
means of resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and X-ray
diffraction. The crystal structure is characterized by alternating stacking of
a Ni3+O2 layer and a (Ag2)+ layer, the former realizing a spin-1/2 triangular
lattice with eg orbital degeneracy and the latter providing itinerant
electrons. It is found that the NiO2 layer exhibits orbital ordering at Ts =
260 K and antiferromagnetic spin ordering at TN = 56 K. Moreover, a moderately
large mass enhancement is found for the itinerant electrons, suggesting a
significant contribution from the nearly localized Ni 3d state to the Ag 5s
state that forms a broad band.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Rapid Communications, Phys.

Numerical approach for retention characteristics of double floating-gate memories
We report on a numerical investigation in which memory characteristics of
double floating-gate (DFG) structure were compared to those of the conventional
single floating-gate structure, including an interference effect between two
cells. We found that the advantage of the DFG structure is its longer retention
time and the disadvantage is its smaller threshold voltage shift. We also
provide an analytical form of charging energy including the interference
effect.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
NMR Observation of Rattling Phonons in the Pyrochlore Superconductor KOs2O6
We report nuclear magnetic resonance studies on the beta-pyrochlore oxide
superconductor KOs2O6. The nuclear relaxation at the K sites is entirely caused
by fluctuations of electric field gradient, which we ascribe to highly
anharmonic low frequency oscillation (rattling) of K ions. A phenomenological
analysis shows a crossover from overdamped to underdamped behavior of the
rattling phonons with decreasing temperature and its sudden sharpening below
the superconducting transition temperature Tc. Absence of the Hebel-Slichter
peak in the relaxation rate at the O sites below Tc also indicates strong
electron-phonon coupling.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Synthesis of superconducting pyrochlore RbOs2O6
RbOs2O6, the third superconducting pyrochlore oxide (known so far), has been
synthesized by encapsulation and by high pressure techniques. Suitable post
chemical treatment of the as-prepared sample allowed us to eliminate the
impurity phases. Bulk superconductivity with Tc=6.4 K was observed in
magnetisation and specific heat measurements. The transition temperature of
RbOs2O6 was found to be the same for both preparation methods. Structural
investigations showed that Rb atoms occupy the 8b site in the pyrochlore
lattice with a lattice parameter of 10.1137(1) A.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, correction to one author name and Figure
Room temperature ferromagnetic behavior in the hollandite-type titanium oxide
A hollandite-type K(x)Ti(8)O(16) polycrystalline sample has been prepared and studied by magnetization, resistivity and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Room temperature ferromagnetic behavior is observed in the magnetic hysteresis measurement. The sample shows a semiconductive temperature dependence in the resistivity measurement. Analysis of the Ti 2p(3/2) core-level XPS spectrum indicates that the titanium ions have a mixed valence of Ti(4+) and Ti(3+). In addition, the valence band spectrum reveals that the 3d electrons tend to localize on Ti(3+) ions in the hollandite-type TiO(2) lattice. Also, analysis of the valence band spectrum shows that the prepared sample is a wide-gap oxide with a band gap of 3.6 eV. These results indicate that the present hollandite-type K(x)Ti(8)O(16) sample can be classified as a TiO(2)-based wide-gap semiconductor with Curie temperature above room temperature. Room temperature ferromagnetism (RTFM) decreases in the sample prepared under a strong reducing gas atmosphere, accompanied with the decrease in the resistivity. The results imply that the localized 3d electrons are responsible for the RTFM of the K(x)Ti(8)O(16) sample
Role of electron-electron and electron-phonon interaction effect in the optical conductivity of VO2
We have investigated the charge dynamics of VO2 by optical reflectivity
measurements. Optical conductivity clearly shows a metal-insulator transition.
In the metallic phase, a broad Drude-like structure is observed. On the other
hand, in the insulating phase, a broad peak structure around 1.3 eV is
observed. It is found that this broad structure observed in the insulating
phase shows a temperature dependence. We attribute this to the electron-phonon
interaction as in the photoemission spectra.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Structural Phase Transition in the Superconducting Pyrochlore Oxide Cd2Re2O7
We report a structural phase transition found at Ts = 200 K in a pyrochlore
oxide Cd2Re2O7 which shows superconductivity at Tc = 1.0 K. X-ray
diffractionexperiments indicate that the phase transition is of the second
order, from a high-temperature phase with the ideal cubic pyrochlore structure
(space group Fd-3m) to a low-temperature phase with another cubic structure
(space group F-43m). It is accompanied by a dramatic change in the resistivity
and magnetic susceptibility and thus must induce a significant change in the
electronic structure of Cd2Re2O7.Comment: 4 pages, 4figures, proceeding for ISSP
