Near-infrared integral field spectroscopy of Massive Young Stellar Objects

We present medium resolution (R≈5300R\approx5300) KK-band integral field spectroscopy of six MYSOs. The targets are selected from the RMS survey, and we used the NIFS on the Gemini North telescope. The data show various spectral line features including Brγ\gamma, CO, H2_2, and \mbox{He\,{\sc i}}. The Brγ\gamma line is detected in emission in all objects with vFWHM∼100v_\mathrm{FWHM}\sim100 -- 200 kms−1^{-1}. V645 Cyg shows a high-velocity P-Cygni profile between -800 kms−1^{-1} and -300 kms−1^{-1}. We performed three-dimensional spectroastrometry to diagnose the circumstellar environment in the vicinity of the central stars using the Brγ\gamma line. We measured the centroids of the velocity components with sub-mas precision. The centroids allow us to discriminate the blueshifted and redshifted components in a roughly east--west direction in both IRAS 18151--1208 and S106 in Brγ\gamma. This lies almost perpendicular to observed larger scale outflows. We conclude, given the widths of the lines and the orientation of the spectroastrometric signature, that our results trace a disc wind in both IRAS 18151--1208 and S106. The CO ν=2−0\nu=2-0 absorption lines at low JJ transitions are detected in IRAS 18151--1208 and AFGL 2136. We analysed the velocity structure of the neutral gas discs. In IRAS 18151--1208, the absorption centroids of the blueshifted and redshifted components are separated in a direction of north-east to south-west, nearly perpendicular to that of the larger scale H2H_2 jet. The position-velocity relations of these objects can be reproduced with central masses of 30 M_{\sun} for IRAS 18151--1208 and 20 M_{\sun} for AFGL 2136. We also detect CO ν=2−0\nu=2-0 bandhead emission in IRAS 18151--1208, S106 and V645 Cyg. The results can be fitted reasonably with a Keplerian rotation model, with masses of 15, 20 and 20 M_{\sun} respectively.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, accepted by MNRA

Cold-induced RNA-binding proteins regulate circadian gene expression by controlling alternative polyadenylation

The body temperature is considered a universal cue by which the master clock synchronizes the peripheral clocks in mammals, but the mechanism is not fully understood. Here we identified two cold-induced RNA-binding proteins (RBPs), Cirbp and Rbm3, as important regulators for the temperature entrained circadian gene expression. The depletion of Cirbp or Rbm3 significantly reduced the amplitudes of core circadian genes. PAR-CLIP analyses showed that the 3'UTR binding sites of Cirbp and Rbm3 were significantly enriched near the polyadenylation sites (PASs). Furthermore, the depletion of Cirbp or Rbm3 shortened 3'UTR, whereas low temperature (upregulating Cirbp and Rbm3) lengthened 3'UTR. Remarkably, we found that they repressed the usage of proximal PASs by binding to the common 3'UTR, and many cases of proximal/distal PAS selection regulated by them showed strong circadian oscillations. Our results suggested that Cirbp and Rbm3 regulated the circadian gene expression by controlling alternative polyadenylation (APA)

Giant magneto-optical response in non-magnetic semiconductor BiTeI driven by bulk Rashba spin splitting

We study the magneto-optical (MO) response of polar semiconductor BiTeI with giant bulk Rashba spin splitting at various carrier densities. Despite being non-magnetic, the material is found to yield a huge MO activity in the infrared region under moderate magnetic fields (<3 T). By comparison with first-principles calculations, we show that such an enhanced MO response is mainly due to the intraband transitions between the Rashba-split bulk conduction bands in BiTeI, which give rise to distinct novel features and systematic doping dependence of the MO spectra. We further predict an even more pronounced enhancement in the low-energy MO response and dc Hall effect near the crossing (Dirac) point of the conduction bands

Molecular hydrogen jets and outflows in the Serpens south filamentary cloud

We aimed to map the jets and outflows from the Serpens South star forming region and find an empirical relationship between the magnetic field and outflow orientation. Near-infrared H2 v=1-0 S(1) 2.122{\mu}m -line imaging of the \sim 30'-long filamentary shaped Serpens South star forming region was carried out. K s broadband imaging of the same region was used for continuum subraction. Candidate driving sources of the mapped jets/outflows are identified from the list of known protostars and young stars in this region, which was derived from studies using recent Spitzer and Herschel telescope observations. 14 Molecular Hydrogen emission-line objects(MHOs) are identified using our continuum-subtracted images. They are found to constitute ten individual flows. Out of these, nine flows are located in the lower-half(southern) part of the Serpens South filament, and one flow is located at the northern tip of the filament. Four flows are driven by well-identified Class 0 protostars, while the remaining six flows are driven by candidate protostars mostly in the Class I stage, based on the Spitzer and Herschel observations. The orientation of the outflows is systematically perpendicular to the direction of the near-infrared polarization vector, recently published in the literature. No significant correlation was observed between the orientation of the flows and the axis of the filamentary cloud.Comment: Accepted by A&A for publication. 7 pages, 5 figure

Edge Current due to Majorana Fermions in Superfluid 3^3He A- and B-Phases

We propose a method utilizing edge current to observe Majorana fermions in the surface Andreev bound state for the superfluid 3^3He A- and B-phases. The proposal is based on self-consistent analytic solutions of quasi-classical Green's function with an edge. The local density of states and edge mass current in the A-phase or edge spin current in the B-phase can be obtained from these solutions. The edge current carried by the Majorana fermions is partially cancelled by quasiparticles (QPs) in the continuum state outside the superfluid gap. QPs contributing to the edge current in the continuum state are distributed in energy even away from the superfluid gap. The effect of Majorana fermions emerges in the depletion of the edge current by temperature within a low-temperature range. The observations that the reduction in the mass current is changed by T2T^2-power in the A-phase and the reduction in the spin current is changed by T3T^3-power in the B-phase establish the existence of Majorana fermions. We also point out another possibility for observing Majorana fermions by controlling surface roughness.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, published versio

Topological superfluid 3He-B in magnetic field and Ising variable

The topological superfluid 3He-B provides many examples of the interplay of symmetry and topology. Here we consider the effect of magnetic field on topological properties of 3He-B. Magnetic field violates the time reversal symmetry. As a result, the topological invariant supported by this symmetry ceases to exist; and thus the gapless fermions on the surface of 3He-B are not protected any more by topology: they become fully gapped. Nevertheless, if perturbation of symmetry is small, the surface fermions remain relativistic with mass proportional to symmetry violating perturbation -- magnetic field. The 3He-B symmetry gives rise to the Ising variable I=+/- 1, which emerges in magnetic field and which characterizes the states of the surface of 3He-B. This variable also determines the sign of the mass term of surface fermions and the topological invariant describing their effective Hamiltonian. The line on the surface, which separates the surface domains with different I, contains 1+1 gapless fermions, which are protected by combined action of symmetry and topology.Comment: 5 pages, JETP Letters style, no figures, version submitted to JETP Letter

    Zeeman Perturbed 63^{63}Cu Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance Study of the Vortex State of YBa2_2Cu3_3O7−δ_{7-\delta}

We report a 63^{63}Cu nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) study of the vortex state for an aligned polycrystalline sample of a slightly overdoped high-TcT_c superconductor YBa2_2Cu3_3O7−δ_{7-\delta} (Tc∼T_{c}\sim92 K) at a low magnetic field of 96 mT along the c axis, near a lower critical field Hc1H_{c1}. We observed the frequency distribution of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time 63T1^{63}T_1 in the Zeeman-perturbed 63^{63}Cu NQR spectrum below TcT_c. The characteristic behavior of 1/63T1^{63}T_1, taking the minimum values with respect to temperature and frequency, indicates the significant role of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in the Doppler-shifted quasiparticle energy spectrum inside and outside vortex cores.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Strong Anisotropy in Spin Suceptibility of Superfluid 3He-B Film Caused by Surface Bound States

Spin susceptibility of superfluid 3He-B film with specular surfaces is calculated. It is shown that, when the magnetic field is applied in a direction perpendiculr to the film, the suseptibility is significantly enhanced by the contribution from the surface bound states. No such enhancement is found for the magnetic field parallel to the film. A simplified model with spatially constant order parameter is used to elucidate the magnetic properties of the surface bound states. The Majorana nature of the zero energy bound state is also mentioned.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

The Herschel Planetary Nebula Survey (HerPlaNS) I. Data Overview and Analysis Demonstration with NGC 6781

    Get PDF
This is the first of a series of investigations into far-IR characteristics of 11 planetary nebulae (PNs) under the Herschel Space Observatory Open Time 1 program, Herschel Planetary Nebula Survey (HerPlaNS). Using the HerPlaNS data set, we look into the PN energetics and variations of the physical conditions within the target nebulae. In the present work, we provide an overview of the survey, data acquisition and processing, and resulting data products. We perform (1) PACS/SPIRE broadband imaging to determine the spatial distribution of the cold dust component in the target PNs and (2) PACS/SPIRE spectral-energy-distribution (SED) and line spectroscopy to determine the spatial distribution of the gas component in the target PNs. For the case of NGC 6781, the broadband maps confirm the nearly pole-on barrel structure of the amorphous carbon-richdust shell and the surrounding halo having temperatures of 26-40 K. The PACS/SPIRE multi-position spectra show spatial variations of far-IR lines that reflect the physical stratification of the nebula. We demonstrate that spatially-resolved far-IR line diagnostics yield the (T_e, n_e) profiles, from which distributions of ionized, atomic, and molecular gases can be determined. Direct comparison of the dust and gas column mass maps constrained by the HerPlaNS data allows to construct an empirical gas-to-dust mass ratio map, which shows a range of ratios with the median of 195+-110. The present analysis yields estimates of the total mass of the shell to be 0.86 M_sun, consisting of 0.54 M_sun of ionized gas, 0.12 M_sun of atomic gas, 0.2 M_sun of molecular gas, and 4 x 10^-3 M_sun of dust grains. These estimates also suggest that the central star of about 1.5 M_sun initial mass is terminating its PN evolution onto the white dwarf cooling track.Comment: 27 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in A&
