Statistical Analysis of Spectral Line Candidates in Gamma-Ray Burst GRB870303
The Ginga data for the gamma-ray burst GRB870303 exhibit low-energy dips in
two temporally distinct spectra, denoted S1 and S2. S1, spanning 4 s, exhibits
a single line candidate at ~ 20 keV, while S2, spanning 9 s, exhibits
apparently harmonically spaced line candidates at ~ 20 and 40 keV. We evaluate
the statistical evidence for these lines, using phenomenological continuum and
line models which in their details are independent of the distance scale to
gamma-ray bursts. We employ the methodologies based on both frequentist and
Bayesian statistical inference that we develop in Freeman et al. (1999b). These
methodologies utilize the information present in the data to select the
simplest model that adequately describes the data from among a wide range of
continuum and continuum-plus-line(s) models. This ensures that the chosen model
does not include free parameters that the data deem unnecessary and that would
act to reduce the frequentist significance and Bayesian odds of the
continuum-plus-line(s) model. We calculate the significance of the
continuum-plus-line(s) models using the Chi-Square Maximum Likelihood Ratio
test. We describe a parametrization of the exponentiated Gaussian absorption
line shape that makes the probability surface in parameter space
better-behaved, allowing us to estimate analytically the Bayesian odds. The
significance of the continuum-plus-line models requested by the S1 and S2 data
are 3.6 x 10^-5 and 1.7 x 10^-4 respectively, with the odds favoring them being
114:1 and 7:1. We also apply our methodology to the combined (S1+S2) data. The
significance of the continuum-plus-lines model requested by the combined data
is 4.2 x 10^-8, with the odds favoring it being 40,300:1.Comment: LaTeX2e (aastex.cls included); 41 pages text, 10 figures (on 11

SL(2,C) Chern-Simons theory and the asymptotic behavior of the colored Jones polynomial
We clarify and refine the relation between the asymptotic behavior of the
colored Jones polynomial and Chern-Simons gauge theory with complex gauge group
SL(2,C). The precise comparison requires a careful understanding of some
delicate issues, such as normalization of the colored Jones polynomial and the
choice of polarization in Chern-Simons theory. Addressing these issues allows
us to go beyond the volume conjecture and to verify some predictions for the
behavior of the subleading terms in the asymptotic expansion of the colored
Jones polynomial.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figure
Effect of Electrolyte Balance in Low-Protein Diets on Broiler Performance and Tibial Dyschondroplasia Incidence
A proper dietary electrolyte balance (DEB) is essential to ensure an optimum acid-base equilibrium and broiler performance. In low-CP diets, this balance can be affected by reduction of soybean meal and inclusion of high levels of synthetic amino acids. Although, some studies have related low-protein diets supplemented with amino acids and DEB, these relations are not well explained, because some research demonstrates confusion about the deficiency and balance of nutrients. The objective of these experiments was to evaluate the DEB effects of diets with low levels of protein supplemented with amino acids on broiler performance and bone development. Results indicated that DEB and CP content influenced broiler chick performance in the starter and growing periods. There was no significant effect due to the interaction between DEB and CP content for tibial dyschondroplasia incidence (TD) or in bone breaking resistance during the growing period of either experiment. The incidence of TD was reduced with 253 mEq/kg DEB in the starter period
Spin-torque efficiency enhanced by Rashba spin splitting in three dimensions
We examine a spin torque induced by the Rashba spin-orbit coupling in three
dimensions within the Boltzmann transport theory. We analytically calculate the
spin torque and show how its behavior is related with the spin topology in the
Fermi surfaces by studying the Fermi-energy dependence of the spin torque.
Moreover we discuss the spin-torque efficiency which is the spin torque divided
by the applied electric current in association with the current-induced
magnetization reversal. It is found that high spin-torque efficiency is
achieved when the Fermi energy lies on only the lower band and there exists an
optimal value for the Rashba parameter, where the spin-torque efficiency
becomes maximum.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Spin-orbit lateral superlattices: energy bands and spin polarization in 2DEG
The Bloch spinors, energy spectrum and spin density in energy bands are
studied for the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) with Rashba spin-orbit (SO)
interaction subject to one-dimensional (1D) periodic electrostatic potential of
a lateral superlattice. The space symmetry of the Bloch spinors with spin
parity is studied. It is shown that the Bloch spinors at fixed quasimomentum
describe the standing spin waves with the wavelength equal to the superlattice
period. The spin projections in these states have the components both parallel
and transverse to the 2DEG plane. The anticrossing of the energy dispersion
curves due to the interplay between the SO and periodic terms is observed,
leading to the spin flip. The relation between the spin parity and the
interband optical selection rules is discussed, and the effect of magnetization
of the SO superlattice in the presence of external electric field is predicted.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, reported at the International Conferences

From the 'cinematic' to the 'anime-ic': Issues of movement in anime
This is the author's accepted manuscript. The final published article is available from the link below. This article explores the way that movement is formally depicted in anime. Drawing on Thomas Lamarre's concepts of the `cinematic' and the `anime-ic', the article interrogates further the differences in movement and action in anime from traditional filmic form. While often considered in terms of `flatness', anime offers spectacle, character development and, ironically, depth through the very form of movement put to use in such texts. The article questions whether the modes of address at work in anime are unique to this form of animation.Taking into account how the terms `cinematic' and `anime-ic' can be understood (and by extension the cinematic and animatic apparatus), the article also begins to explore how viewers might identify with such images
Resonant Cyclotron Radiation Transfer Model Fits to Spectra from Gamma-Ray Burst GRB870303
We demonstrate that models of resonant cyclotron radiation transfer in a
strong field (i.e. cyclotron scattering) can account for spectral lines seen at
two epochs, denoted S1 and S2, in the Ginga data for GRB870303. Using a
generalized version of the Monte Carlo code of Wang et al. (1988,1989b), we
model line formation by injecting continuum photons into a static
plane-parallel slab of electrons threaded by a strong neutron star magnetic
field (~ 10^12 G) which may be oriented at an arbitrary angle relative to the
slab normal. We examine two source geometries, which we denote "1-0" and "1-1,"
with the numbers representing the relative electron column densities above and
below the continuum photon source plane. We compare azimuthally symmetric
models, i.e. models in which the magnetic field is parallel to the slab normal,
with models having more general magnetic field orientations. If the bursting
source has a simple dipole field, these two model classes represent line
formation at the magnetic pole, or elsewhere on the stellar surface. We find
that the data of S1 and S2, considered individually, are consistent with both
geometries, and with all magnetic field orientations, with the exception that
the S1 data clearly favor line formation away from a polar cap in the 1-1
geometry, with the best-fit model placing the line-forming region at the
magnetic equator. Within both geometries, fits to the combined (S1+S2) data
marginally favor models which feature equatorial line formation, and in which
the observer's orientation with respect to the slab changes between the two
epochs. We interpret this change as being due to neutron star rotation, and we
place limits on the rotation period.Comment: LaTeX2e (aastex.cls included); 45 pages text, 17 figures (on 21

Berry phase in Magnetic Superconductors
In magnetic systems, electronic bands often acquire nontrivial topological
structure characterized by gauge flux distribution in momentum (k)-space. It
sometimes follows that the phase of the wavefunctions cannot be defined
uniquely over the whole Brillouin zone. In this Letter we develop a theory of
superconductivity in the presence of this gauge flux both in two- and
three-dimensional systems. It is found that the superconducting gap has "nodes"
as a function of k where the Fermi surface is penetrated by a gauge string.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, substantial changes in the presentation, to be

Glueball mass from quantized knot solitons and gauge-invariant gluon mass
We propose an approach which enables one to obtain simultaneously the
glueball mass and the gluon mass in the gauge-invariant way to shed new light
on the mass gap problem in Yang-Mills theory. First, we point out that the
Faddeev (Skyrme--Faddeev-Niemi) model can be induced through the
gauge-invariant vacuum condensate of mass dimension two from SU(2) Yang-Mills
theory. Second, we obtain the glueball mass spectrum by performing the
collective coordinate quantization of the topological knot soliton in the
Faddeev model. Third, we demonstrate that a relationship between the glueball
mass and the gluon mass is obtained, since the gauge-invariant gluon mass is
also induced from the relevant vacuum condensate. Finally, we determine
physical values of two parameters in the Faddeev model and give an estimate of
the relevant vacuum condensation in Yang-Mills theory. Our results indicate
that the Faddeev model can play the role of a low-energy effective theory of
the quantum SU(2) Yang-Mills theory.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables; a version accepted for publication in

Vertex operators for quantum groups and application to integrable systems
Starting with any R-matrix with spectral parameter, obeying the Yang-Baxter
equation and a unitarity condition, we construct the corresponding infinite
dimensional quantum group U_{R} in term of a deformed oscillators algebra A_R.
The realization we present is an infinite series, very similar to a vertex
operator.
Then, considering the integrable hierarchy naturally associated to A_{R}, we
show that U_{R} provides its integrals of motion. The construction can be
applied to any infinite dimensional quantum group, e.g. Yangians or elliptic
quantum groups.
Taking as an example the R-matrix of Y(N), the Yangian based on gl(N), we
recover by this construction the nonlinear Schrodinger equation and its Y(N)
symmetry.Comment: 19 pages, no figure, Latex2e Error in theorem 3.3 and lemma 3.1
