Interaction between the Intergalactic Medium and Galactic Outflows from Dwarf Galaxies
We have carried out 2D hydrodynamical simulations in order to study the
interaction between supernova-powered gas outflows from low-mass galaxies and
the local intergalactic medium (IGM). We are specifically interested in
investigating whether a high pressure IGM, such as that in clusters of
galaxies, can prevent the gas from escaping from the galaxy. The interface
between the outflow and ambient IGM is demarcated by a dense expanding shell
formed by the gas swept-up by the outflow. A sufficiently high IGM pressure can
bring the shell to a halt well before it escapes the galaxy. Galaxies in such
high pressure environments are, however, to be ploughing through the IGM at
relatively high velocities. Hence, they will also be subject to ram pressure,
which acts to strip the gas from the galaxy. We have carried out simulations
that take into account the combined impact of ram pressure and thermal
pressure. We find that ram pressure deforms the shell into a tail-like
structure, fragments it into dense clouds and eventually drags the clouds away
from the galaxy. The clouds are potential sites of star formation and if viewed
during this transient phase, the galaxy will appear to have a low-surface
brightness tail much like the galaxies with diffuse comet-like tail seen in
z=1.15 cluster 3C324. In contrast, the relatively unhindered outflows in low
density, low temperature environments can drive the shells of swept-up gas out
to large distances from the galaxy. Such shells, if they intersect a quasar
line-of-sight, would give rise to Ly absorption lines of the kind seen

Electron impact on K+: mechanisms for extreme ultraviolet submission
A series of R-matrix calculations on K+ is used to derive electron excitation and ionization cross sections. The excitation cross section to the 4s and 3d levels leading to the K+ 60.1, 60.8 and 61.3nm emission lines shows poor agreement with the cross beam experiment of Zapesochny et al (1986, Zh. Eksp. Teor. Fiz. 90 1972 [Sov. Phys. JETP 63 1155]). Cross sections are also presented for exciting the 4p, 5s and 4d levels, the autoionizing 3s open-shell levels, and for ionization. It is shown how pseudoresonances in the calculated cross section can be eliminated by increasing the target
basis.</p
SL(2,C) Chern-Simons theory and the asymptotic behavior of the colored Jones polynomial
We clarify and refine the relation between the asymptotic behavior of the
colored Jones polynomial and Chern-Simons gauge theory with complex gauge group
SL(2,C). The precise comparison requires a careful understanding of some
delicate issues, such as normalization of the colored Jones polynomial and the
choice of polarization in Chern-Simons theory. Addressing these issues allows
us to go beyond the volume conjecture and to verify some predictions for the
behavior of the subleading terms in the asymptotic expansion of the colored

Comparative Morphology of the Penis and Clitoris in Four Species of Moles (Talpidae).
The penile and clitoral anatomy of four species of Talpid moles (broad-footed, star-nosed, hairy-tailed, and Japanese shrew moles) were investigated to define penile and clitoral anatomy and to examine the relationship of the clitoral anatomy with the presence or absence of ovotestes. The ovotestis contains ovarian tissue and glandular tissue resembling fetal testicular tissue and can produce androgens. The ovotestis is present in star-nosed and hairy-tailed moles, but not in broad-footed and Japanese shrew moles. Using histology, three-dimensional reconstruction, and morphometric analysis, sexual dimorphism was examined with regard to a nine feature masculine trait score that included perineal appendage length (prepuce), anogenital distance, and presence/absence of bone. The presence/absence of ovotestes was discordant in all four mole species for sex differentiation features. For many sex differentiation features, discordance with ovotestes was observed in at least one mole species. The degree of concordance with ovotestes was highest for hairy-tailed moles and lowest for broad-footed moles. In relationship to phylogenetic clade, sex differentiation features also did not correlate with the similarity/divergence of the features and presence/absence of ovotestes. Hairy-tailed and Japanese shrew moles reside in separated clades, but they exhibit a high degree of congruence. Broad-footed and hairy-tailed moles reside within the same clade but had one of the lowest correlations in features and presence/absence of ovotestes. Thus, phylogenetic affinity and the presence/absence of ovotestes are poor predictors for most sex differentiation features within mole external genitalia
Statistical Analysis of Spectral Line Candidates in Gamma-Ray Burst GRB870303
The Ginga data for the gamma-ray burst GRB870303 exhibit low-energy dips in
two temporally distinct spectra, denoted S1 and S2. S1, spanning 4 s, exhibits
a single line candidate at ~ 20 keV, while S2, spanning 9 s, exhibits
apparently harmonically spaced line candidates at ~ 20 and 40 keV. We evaluate
the statistical evidence for these lines, using phenomenological continuum and
line models which in their details are independent of the distance scale to
gamma-ray bursts. We employ the methodologies based on both frequentist and
Bayesian statistical inference that we develop in Freeman et al. (1999b). These
methodologies utilize the information present in the data to select the
simplest model that adequately describes the data from among a wide range of
continuum and continuum-plus-line(s) models. This ensures that the chosen model
does not include free parameters that the data deem unnecessary and that would
act to reduce the frequentist significance and Bayesian odds of the
continuum-plus-line(s) model. We calculate the significance of the
continuum-plus-line(s) models using the Chi-Square Maximum Likelihood Ratio
test. We describe a parametrization of the exponentiated Gaussian absorption
line shape that makes the probability surface in parameter space
better-behaved, allowing us to estimate analytically the Bayesian odds. The
significance of the continuum-plus-line models requested by the S1 and S2 data
are 3.6 x 10^-5 and 1.7 x 10^-4 respectively, with the odds favoring them being
114:1 and 7:1. We also apply our methodology to the combined (S1+S2) data. The
significance of the continuum-plus-lines model requested by the combined data

pH-triggered phase inversion and separation of hydrophobised bacterial cellulose stabilised Pickering emulsions
The pH-triggered transitional phase behaviour of Pickering emulsions stabilised by hydrophobised bacterial cellulose (BC) is reported in this work. Neat BC was esterified with acetic (C2–), hexanoic (C6–) and dodecanoic (C12–) acids, respectively. We observed that C6– and C12–BC stabilised emulsions exhibited a pH-triggered reversible transitional phase separation. Water-in-toluene emulsions containing of 60 vol.% dispersed phase stabilised by C6– and C12–BC were produced at pH 5. Lowering the pH of the aqueous phase to 1 did not affect the emulsion type. Increasing the pH to 14, however, caused the emulsions to phase separate. This phase separation was caused by electrostatic repulsion between modified BC due to dissociable acidic surface groups at high pH, which lowered the surface coverage of the water droplets by modified BC. When the pH was re-adjusted to 1 again, w/o emulsions re-formed for C6– and C12–BC stabilised emulsions. C2–BC stabilised emulsions, on the other hand, underwent an irreversible pH-triggered transitional phase separation and inversion. This difference in phase behaviour between C2–BC and C6–/C12–BC was attributed to the hydrolysis of the ester bonds of C2–BC at high pH. This hypothesis is in good agreement with the measured degree of surface substitution (DSS) of modified BC after the pH-triggered experiments. The DSS of C2–BC decreased by 20% whilst the DSS remained constant for C6– and C12–BC
Suppressive Effects of Selected Food Phytochemicals on CD74 Expression in NCI-N87 Gastric Carcinoma Cells
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is one of the most widespread human pathogens, and plays major roles in chronic gastritis and gastric cancer. CD74 of gastric epithelial cells has recently been identified as an adhesion molecule to urease in H. pylori. In this study, we found that CD74 is highly expressed in a constitutive manner in NCI-N87 human gastric carcinoma cells at both the protein and mRNA levels as compared with Hs738St./Int fetal gastric cells. Subsequently, a novel cell-based ELISA able to rapidly screen the suppressive agents of CD74 expression was established. NCI-N87 cells were treated separately with 25 different food phytochemicals (4–100 µM) for 48 h and subjected to our novel assay. From those results, a citrus coumarin, bergamottin, was indicated to be the most promising compound with an LC50/IC50 value greater than 7.1, followed by luteolin (>5.4), nobiletin (>5.3), and quercetin (>5.1). Our findings suggest that these CD74 suppressants are unique candidates for preventing H. pylori adhesion and subsequent infection with reasonable action mechanisms
