    Realization of SU(2)*SU(6) Fermi System

    We report the realization of a novel degenerate Fermi mixture with an SU(2)*SU(6) symmetry in a cold atomic gas. We successfully cool the mixture of the two fermionic isotopes of ytterbium 171Yb with the nuclear spin I=1/2 and 173Yb with I=5/2 below the Fermi temperature T_ F as 0.46T_F for 171Yb and 0.54T_F for 173Yb. The same scattering lengths for different spin components make this mixture featured with the novel SU(2)*SU(6) symmetry. The nuclear spin components are separately imaged by exploiting an optical Stern-Gerlach effect. In addition, the mixture is loaded into a 3D optical lattice to implement the SU(2)*SU(6) Hubbard model. This mixture will open the door to the study of novel quantum phases such as a spinor Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-like fermionic superfluid.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures V2: revised reference

    Hidden Symmetry Protection and Topology in Surface Maxwell Waves

    Since the latter half of the 20th century, the use of metal in optics has become a promising plasmonics field for controlling light at a deep subwavelength scale. Surface plasmon polaritons localized on metal surfaces are crucial in plasmonics. However, despite the long history of plasmonics, the underlying mechanism producing the surface waves is not fully understood. This study unveils the hidden symmetry protection that ensures the existence of degenerated electric zero modes. These zero modes are identified as physical origins of surface plasmon polaritons, and similar zero modes can be directly excited at a temporal boundary. In real space, the zero modes possess vector-field rotation related to surface impedance. Focusing on the surface impedance, we prove the bulk-edge correspondence, which guarantees the existence of surface plasmon polaritons even with nonuniformity. Lastly, we extract the underlying physics in the topological transition between metal and dielectric material using a minimal circuit model with duality.     Parents Involvement in Their Child with Pervasive Developmental Disabilities

    本研究の目的は、特別な支援を必要とする子どもを育てる親が、成長にともなって変化する子どもの行動や様子をどのように認識しているのかについて、認識変容モデルを生成することとした。特別な支援を必要とする子どもを育てる父母1組を対象に面接を実施し、出生から現在までの子どもの育ちと、育ちに対する思いについての語りを得た。修正版グラウンデッド・セオリー・アプローチを用いて語りを分析した結果、23個の概念から10個のカテゴリーを生成し、最終的に5個のカテゴリーグループを編成した。結果、認識は子どもの成長にともなって変容していくものの、なぜそのような行動をとるのだろうかと子どもの行動を解釈したり、課題を発見したり、子どもの成長や変化を感じたりすることについては、断続的に続けられていた。不安や子育てに対する徒労感は継続的に一定程度見られるものの、社会資源とのつながりにより、保護者の認識に変容が見られたことで、不安や徒労感が減少し、家族を含めた将来への展望が語られた。The purpose of this study was to create a model of recognition change to show how parents understands the behavior of children with pervasive developmental disabilities. Interviews were conducted with a parents of child with pervasive developmental disabilities, having them recount the state of their child from birth to the present day and their feelings about their child’s growth. After analyzing the content of the interview using the Modified grounded theory approach, 10 categories were generated from 23 concepts, which were ultimately compiled into 5 category groups. The results showed that the parents’ recognitions changed in accordance with the child’s growth. However, interpreting their child’s behavior (i.e., Why do the children take such a behavior?), discovering issues, and realizing the growth of and changes in their child were continuously experienced. Although the parent has anxiety and psychological fatigue for the child care continuously, such feelings were seen to decrease as their connections with social resources changed the parents’ recognitions. Consequently, they recounted future prospects regarding their family

    Helping-Like Behaviour in Mice Towards Conspecifics Constrained Inside Tubes

    Prosocial behaviour, including helping behaviour, benefits others. Recently, helping-like behaviour has been observed in rats, but whether it is oriented towards rescue, social contact with others, or other goals remains unclear. Therefore, we investigated whether helping-like behaviour could be observed in mice similar to that in rats. Because mice are social animals widely used in neuroscience, the discovery of helping-like behaviour in mice would be valuable in clarifying the psychological and biological mechanisms underlying pro-sociability. We constrained mice inside tubes. Subject mice were allowed to move freely in cages with tubes containing constrained conspecifics. The subject mice released both cagemates and stranger mice but did not engage in opening empty tubes. Furthermore, the same behaviour was observed under aversive conditions and with anesthetised conspecifics. Interestingly, hungry mice opened the tubes containing food before engaging in tube-opening behaviour to free constrained conspecifics. Mice showed equal preferences for constrained and freely moving conspecifics. We demonstrated for the first time that mice show tube-opening behaviour. Furthermore, we partly clarified the purpose and motivation of this behaviour. An effective mouse model for helping-like behaviour would facilitate research on the mechanisms underlying prosocial behaviour

    Layer-specific expression of extracellular matrix molecules in the mouse somatosensory and piriform cortices

    In the developing central nervous system (CNS), extracellular matrix (ECM) molecules have regulating roles such as in brain development, neural-circuit maturation, and synaptic-function control. However, excluding the perineuronal net (PNN) area, the distribution, constituent elements, and expression level of granular ECM molecules (diffuse ECM) present in the mature CNS remain unclear. Diffuse ECM molecules in the CNS share the components of PNNs and are likely functional. As cortical functions are greatly region-dependent, we hypothesized that ECM molecules would differ in distribution, expression level, and components in a region- and layer-dependent manner. We examined the layer-specific expression of several chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (aggrecan, neurocan, and brevican), tenascin-R, Wisteria floribunda agglutinin (WFA)-positive molecules, hyaluronic acid, and link protein in the somatosensory and piriform cortices of mature mice. Furthermore, we investigated expression changes in WFA-positive molecules due to aging. In the somatosensory cortex, PNN density was particularly high at layer 4 (L4), but not all diffuse ECM molecules were highly expressed at L4 compared to the other layers. There was almost no change in tenascin-R and hyaluronic acid in any somatosensory-cortex layer. Neurocan showed high expression in L1 of the somatosensory cortex. In the piriform cortex, many ECM molecules showed higher expression in L1 than in the other layers. However, hyaluronic acid showed high expression in deep layers. Here, we clarified that ECM molecules differ in constituent elements and expression in a region- and layer-dependent manner.     Development of a preoperative prediction model for new-onset diabetes mellitus after partial pancreatectomy

    ABSTRACT: Pancreatectomy is an invasive surgery that is sometimes associated with complications. New-onset diabetes mellitus sometimes develops after partial pancreatectomy and severely affects the patient's quality of life. This study aimed to develop a preoperative prediction model of new-onset diabetes mellitus after partial pancreatectomy, which will help patients and surgeons to achieve more easily better common decisions on regarding whether to perform partial pancreatectomy. This retrospective cohort study analyzed medical records of patients who underwent partial pancreatectomy (total pancreatectomy excluded) from April 1, 2008, to February 28, 2016, which were available in the database provided by Medical Data Vision Co., Ltd. (Tokyo, Japan). The predictors were preoperative age, body mass index, hemoglobin A1c level, blood glucose level, and indication for partial pancreatectomy. The outcome was the development of new-onset diabetes mellitus at 1 to 12 months after partial pancreatectomy. We used a logistic regression model and calculated the scores of each predictor. To determine test performance, we assessed discrimination ability using the receiver operating characteristic curve and calibration with a calibration plot and the Hosmer-Lemeshow test. We also performed internal validation using the bootstrap method. Of 681 patients, 125 (18.4%) had new-onset diabetes mellitus after partial pancreatectomy. The developed prediction model had a possible range of 0 to 46 points. The median score was 13, and the interquartile range was 9 to 22. The C-statistics of the receiver operating characteristic curve on the score to predict the outcome was .70 (95% confidence interval [CI], .65-.75). Regarding the test performance, the Hosmer-Lemeshow test was not significant (P = .17), and calibration was good. In the bootstrapped cohorts, the C-statistics was .69 (95% CI, .62-.76). We developed a preoperative prediction model for new-onset diabetes mellitus after partial pancreatectomy. This would provide important information for surgeons and patients when deciding whether to perform partial pancreatectomy
