    Sensory processing, autonomic nervous function, and social participation in people with mental illnesses

    Introduction: This study investigated the relationship between sensory processing, respiratory sinus arrhythmia, and social participation in people with psychiatric disorders. Method: This study recruited 30 participants, primarily women, from a psychiatric university hospital with a mental health diagnosis listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition (mean age: 37.7 ± 16.0 years). Sensory processing, autonomic nervous function, and social participation were measured using the Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile®, respiratory sinus arrhythmia, and World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule, respectively. Through mediation analysis, a model wherein sensory processing mediated the relationship between respiratory sinus arrhythmia and social participation was developed. Results: Social participation was moderately to highly correlated with Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile® quadrants (excluding sensory seeking) and respiratory sinus arrhythmia. Furthermore, the mediation analysis revealed that sensory avoiding mediated the relationship between respiratory sinus arrhythmia and social participation, consequently counteracting the direct relationship. Conclusion: A mediation model was constructed, which indicated that individuals with psychiatric disorders and low parasympathetic nervous system activity expressed higher sensory processing quadrant of sensory avoiding. Ultimately, this was associated with reduced social participation

    第二京阪道路(全長28.3km)の大阪側(16.9km)が平成22年4月に開通した。第二京阪道路は高架部が自動車専用道路,高架下および平面部が一般道路として使用している。二輪車に車載カメラを取り付け安全運転の実車走行を第二京阪道路の一般道路(大阪側)で実験する。The Osaka side (16.9 km) of the second Keihan road (28.3 km in full length) was inaugurated in April, Heisei 22. In the elevated part, the bottom of a driveway and elevated and a plane part are using the second Keihan road as a local street. An in-vehicle camera is attached to a two-wheel vehicle, and it experiments in a real vehicle run of safe driving in the local street (Osaka side) of the second Keihan road

    Design-thinking skill enhancement in virtual reality: A literature study

    As a methodology, design thinking involves practicing “a way of thinking” that non-designers can use as a source of inspiration instead being limited to a group of professional designers. This methodology has gained research attention because of the growing demands for social innovation and sustainability. The general public is expected to gain design-thinking skills through training or by applying design-thinking tools. Virtual reality (VR) is considered a potential tool to help accelerate augmenting design-thinking skills because it allows users to have embodied and immersive experiences. This study reviews existing literature on how VR has been used to enhance design-thinking skills. The general features of the publications such as the year of publication, design-thinking stages, VR types, targeted participants, and publication fields are analyzed for determining the latest trends and scenarios under this research topic. Further, a thematic analysis that follows creative enhancement structures is conducted to understand the role of VR in enhancing design-thinking skills, and future research directions are discussed based on the results. The review concludes that VR has the potential to enhance creativity in many aspects. Moreover, it highlights the need of gaining deeper understanding about 1) art, humanities, and societal perspectives; 2) cognition processes in VR; 3) emphasizing and defining stages in the design-thinking process; 4) technological improvements combined with the Metaverse; and 5) hybrid of the virtual and real worlds

    Pivotal Role of Dendritic Cell–derived CXCL10 in the Retention of T Helper Cell 1 Lymphocytes in Secondary Lymph Nodes

    Various immune diseases are considered to be regulated by the balance of T helper (Th)1 and Th2 subsets. Although Th lymphocytes are believed to be generated in draining lymph nodes (LNs), in vivo Th cell behaviors during Th1/Th2 polarization are largely unexplored. Using a murine granulomatous liver disease model induced by Propionibacterium acnes, we show that retention of Th1 cells in the LNs is controlled by a chemokine, CXCL10/interferon (IFN) inducible protein 10 produced by mature dendritic cells (DCs). Hepatic LN DCs preferentially produced CXCL10 to attract 5′-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine (BrdU)+CD4+ T cells and form clusters with IFN-γ–producing CD4+ T cells by day 7 after antigen challenge. Blockade of CXCL10 dramatically altered the distribution of cluster-forming BrdU+CD4+ T cells. BrdU+CD4+ T cells in the hepatic LNs were selectively diminished while those in the circulation were significantly increased by treatment with anti-CXCL10 monoclonal antibody. This was accompanied by accelerated infiltration of memory T cells into the periphery of hepatic granuloma sites, most of them were in cell cycle and further produced higher amount of IFN-γ leading to exacerbation of liver injury. Thus, mature DC-derived CXCL10 is pivotal to retain Th1 lymphocytes within T cell areas of draining LNs and optimize the Th1-mediated immune responses

    Gpr19 encodes an evolutionarily conserved orphan G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) with currently no established physiological role in vivo. We characterized Gpr19 expression in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), the locus of the master circadian clock in the brain, and determined its role in the context of the circadian rhythm regulation. We found that Gpr19 is mainly expressed in the dorsal part of the SCN, with its expression fluctuating in a circadian fashion. A conserved cAMP-responsive element in the Gpr19 promoter was able to produce circadian transcription in the SCN. Gpr19⁻/⁻mice exhibited a prolonged circadian period and a delayed initiation of daily locomotor activity. Gpr19 deficiency caused the downregulation of several genes that normally peak during the night, including Bmal1 and Gpr176. In response to light exposure at night, Gpr19⁻/⁻mice had a reduced capacity for light-induced phase-delays, but not for phase-advances. This defect was accompanied by reduced response of c-Fos expression in the dorsal region of the SCN, while apparently normal in the ventral area of the SCN, in Gpr19⁻/⁻ mice. Thus, our data demonstrate that Gpr19 is an SCN-enriched orphan GPCR with a distinct role in circadian regulation and may provide a potential target option for modulating the circadian clock

    Usefulness of the waterless method for surgical hand washing:A comparison with the conventional scrub method

    To evaluate the usefulness of the waterless hand washing method for surgical anti-sepsis, we conducted a microbial sampling study, comparing it to a conventional surgical scrub method. A total of 18 operating-room nurses were undertaking the following three-hand washing protocols : scrubbing with blushes using 4w/v% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) and also rubbing with CHG, followed by application of a 0.2w/v% CHG with ethanol (HS) preparation. (conventional method); rubbing with CHG and application of HS (two-stage surgical scrub method; TSS); rubbing with anti-septic soap and application of HS (waterless method; WL). Microbial sampling was conducted after hand washing using the glove juice method. No statistically significant differences in bacterial numbers were found among these three methods. The number of bacterially positive subjects was significantly higher in the conventional method than the TSS method. These results indicate that there are adverse effects of blush-scrubbing, as the detected bacteria were related to normal skin flora. As such, the WL method for hand anti-sepsis appears to be equivalent to the conventional surgical scrubbing method in terms of microbial detection. The WL method should therefore be introduced as a standard hand anti-sepsis method at the time of surgery because it is cost-effective as well as time-efficient

    Bioelectrochemical Stimulation of Electromethanogenesis at a Seawater-Based Subsurface Aquifer in a Natural Gas Field

    In subsurface anoxic environments, microbial communities generally produce methane as an end-product to consume organic compounds. This metabolic function is a source of biogenic methane in coastal natural gas aquifers, submarine mud volcanoes, and methane hydrates. Within the methanogenic communities, hydrogenotrophic methanogens, and syntrophic bacteria are converting volatile fatty acids to methane syntrophically via interspecies hydrogen transfer. Recently, direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) between fermentative/syntrophic bacteria and electrotrophic methanogens has been proposed as an effective interspecies metabolite transfer process to enhance methane production. In this study, in order to stimulate the DIET-associated methanogenic process at deep biosphere-aquifer systems in a natural gas field, we operated a bioelectrochemical system (BES) to apply voltage between an anode and a cathode. Two single-chamber BESs were filled with seawater-based formation water collected from an onshore natural gas well, repeatedly amended with acetate, and operated with 600 mV between electrodes for 21 months, resulting in a successful conversion of acetate to methane via electrical current consumption. One reactor yielded a stable current of ~200 mA/m2 with a coulombic efficiency (CE) of >90%; however, the other reactor, which had been incidentally disconnected for 3 days, showed less electromethanogenic activity with a CE of only ~10%. The 16S rRNA gene-based community analyses showed that two methanogenic archaeal families, Methanocalculaceae and Methanobacteriaceae, were abundant in cathode biofilms that were mainly covered by single-cell-layered biofilm, implicating them as key players in the electromethanogenesis. In contrast, family Methanosaetaceae was abundant at both electrodes and the electrolyte suspension only in the reactor with less electromethanogenesis, suggesting this family was not involved in electromethanogenesis and became abundant only after the no-electron-flow event. The anodes were covered by thick biofilms with filamentous networks, with the family Desulfuromonadaceae dominating in the early stage of the operation. The family Geobacteraceae (mainly genus Geoalkalibacter) became dominant during the longer-term operation, suggesting that these families were correlated with electrode-respiring reactions. These results indicate that the BES reactors with voltage application effectively activated a subsurface DIET-related methanogenic microbiome in the natural gas field, and specific electrogenic bacteria and electromethanogenic archaea were identified within the anode and/or cathode biofilms

    Advantages of upright position imaging with medium-energy collimator for sentinel node lymphoscintigraphy in breast cancer patients

    金沢大学大学院医学系研究科先端医療技術学Objective: To evaluate the advantage of upright position imaging with a medium-energy collimator for the detection of sentinel lymph node (SLN). Methods: Thirty-four patients with operable breast cancer underwent sentinel node lymphoscintigraphy with 99mTc-tin colloid. Images were obtained in 5 different positions and paired images from the same patient were compared using side-by-side interpretation. Images were compared in 3 groups: group 1 (anterior view); supine (SAV) vs. upright (UAV), group 2 (oblique view); supine (SOV) vs. upright (UOV), and group 3 (oblique view); modified supine (MOV) vs. UOV. Image quality was evaluated using a 3-grade scale of clear, faint, and equivocal depiction, and correlated to 3 parameters: distance from injection site to lymph node (hot node), counts in hot node, and image contrast. Parameters in group 1 were compared by classifying the primary tumor site into 4 subregions. Results: Image quality in all 3 groups was more enhanced on the image obtained in the upright position than that in the supine position. Obtaining images in an upright position increased the mean distances by 1.5-3.2 cm, and mean contrasts were significantly increased by 0.13-0.31 (p < 0.05). It was shown that image quality was more greatly affected by image contrast than by counts in the hot node. Image contrast of 0.5 seemed an appropriate threshold level for detection of the hot node. On comparison of tumor sites, the upper outer quadrant (C) region of the 4 subregions demonstrated greater contrast enhancement on upright position images. Conclusion: Clinical images obtained in an upright position with a medium-energy collimator were superior to those obtained in a supine position. Use of this procedure is recommended to enhance lymph node detection on sentinel node lymphoscintigraphy
