Effective force constant ratios : iron in iridium and rhodium
Classical methods of analyzing heat capacity data for the characteristic moments of the frequency distribution are applied to iridium and rhodium. Impurity moments are determined from high and low temperature f values. These moments are combined by modern theory to estimate the magnitude of the host-host to host-impurity force constant ratio. Ratios of the various host moments are also examined

Are persons with rheumatoid arthritis deconditioned? A review of physical activity and aerobic capacity
BACKGROUND: Although the general assumption is that patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have decreased levels of physical activity, no review has addressed whether this assumption is correct. METHODS: Our objective was to systematically review the literature for physical activity levels and aerobic capacity (VO(2max)). in patients with (RA), compared to healthy controls and a reference population. Studies investigating physical activity, energy expenditure or aerobic capacity in patients with RA were included. Twelve studies met our inclusion criteria. RESULTS: In one study that used doubly labeled water, the gold standard measure, physical activity energy expenditure of patients with RA was significantly decreased. Five studies examined aerobic capacity. Contradictory evidence was found that patients with RA have lower VO(2max) than controls, but when compared to normative values, patients scored below the 10(th) percentile. In general, it appears that patients with RA spend more time in light and moderate activities and less in vigorous activities than controls. CONCLUSION: Patients with RA appear to have significantly decreased energy expenditure, very low aerobic capacity compared to normative values and spend less time in vigorous activities than controls
Regional geothermal aquifer architecture of the fluvial Lower Cretaceous Nieuwerkerk Formation – a palynological analysis
The primary challenge for efficient geothermal doublet design and deployment is the adequate prediction of the size, shape, lateral extent and thickness (or aquifer architecture) of aquifers. In the West Netherlands Basin, fluvial Lower Cretaceous sandstone-rich successions form the main aquifers for geothermal heat exploitation. Large variations in the thickness of these successions are recognised in currently active doublet systems that cannot be explained. This creates an uncertainty in aquifer thickness prediction, which increases the uncertainty in doublet lifetime prediction as it has an impact on net aquifer volume. The goal of this study was to improve our understanding of the thickness variations and regional aquifer architecture of the Nieuwerkerk Formation geothermal aquifers. For this purpose, new palynological data were evaluated to correlate aquifers in currently active doublet systems based on their chronostratigraphic position and regional Maximum Flooding Surfaces. Based on the palynological cuttings analysis, the fluvial interval of the Nieuwerkerk Formation was subdivided into two successions: a Late Ryazanian to Early Valanginian succession and a Valanginian succession. Within these successions trends were identified in sandstone content. In combination with seismic interpretation, maps were constructed that predict aquifer thickness and their lateral extent in the basin. Stratified Juror Selection: Cross-Section by Design
Of the various selection methods that contribute to the underrepresentation of members of racial and ethnic minority groups on juries, peremptory challenges have attracted the most attention in recent years. Yet gains in diversity from regulating, or even eliminating, peremptory challenges are necessarily limited by the composition of the venire from which jurors are chosen. This article describes methods of constructing lists of veniremembers and qualified jurors used by some courts to restore the racial and ethnic diversity that is missing from the primary source lists or is eroded in the process of summoning and qualification. It also evaluates potential legal challenges to these techniques

Designing for deck stress over precast panels in negative moment regions
One of the leading causes of structural deficiencies in the United States Bridge Inventory is related to deterioration and durability problems with concrete bridge decks (NCHRP 2004). The primary issue with bridge decks is related to cracking of the concrete that provides a direct conduit for moisture and other corrosion agents to permeate and attack the reinforcing steel. Adequate reinforcing steel is needed in the deck to minimize crack widths and therefore limit corrosion of reinforcing steel. A particular case of interest occurs when the bridge deck is constructed using partial-depth precast concrete deck panels (PCP) with cast-in-place (CIP) concrete topping. When this type of deck construction is used over the negative moment region of continuous steel or concrete girders, the amount of reinforcing steel that should be placed within the CIP concrete topping to provide adequate crack control is not currently well understood. This thesis is part of a larger study being conducted for the Texas Department of Transportation that is examining this issue. In the study reported in this thesis, two newly constructed bridges were instrumented to monitor the behavior of the bridge deck. These bridges did not use continuous girders, but rather had simply supported prestressed concrete girders, with a bridge deck constructed using a “poor-boy” construction joint detail over interior bents. Each bridge utilized three different reinforcement layouts centered over an interior bent within the poor-boy joint detail. Strain gages in each portion provided constant readings to display the distribution of strain across the bridge deck. Each bridge was monitored over a period from when the deck was cast until when the bridge was opened to traffic. Live load tests were also conducted to provide data on strains induced by heavy trucks. Based on the field data, no clear correlation was found between the amount of steel added and the strain measured. However, based on the measured data combined with field observations of cracking, the current standard reinforcement appears to be adequate in controlling the crack widths for the poor-boy deck detail. While the poor-boy deck joint detail is different from deck details used over negative moment regions of continuous girders, this data provides useful insights in to bridge deck behavior that will help guide future phases of the larger study.Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineerin
Permitting Jury Discussions During Trial: Impact of the Arizona Reform
A field experiment tested the effect of an Arizona civil jury reform that allows jurors to discuss evidence among themselves during the trial. Judges, jurors, attorneys, and litigants completed questionnaires in trials randomly assigned to either a Trial Discussions condition, in which jurors were permitted to discuss the evidence during trial, or a No Discussions condition, in which jurors were prohibited from discussing evidence during trial according to traditional admonitions. Judicial agreement with jury verdicts did not differ between conditions. Permitting jurors to discuss the evidence did affect the degree of certainty that jurors reported about their preferences at the start of jury deliberations, the level of conflict on the jury, and the likelihood of reaching unanimity
