Deletion mutants in COP9/Signalosome subunits in fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe display distinct phenotypes
The COP9/signalosome complex is highly conserved in evolution and possesses significant structural similarity to the 19S regulatory lid complex of the proteasome. It also shares limited similarity to the translation initiation factor eIF3. The signalosome interacts with multiple cullins in mammalian cells. In the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe, the Csn1 subunit is required for the removal of covalently attached Nedd8 from Pcu1, one of three S. pombe cullins. It remains unclear whether this activity is required for all the functions ascribed to the signalosome. We previously identified Csn1 and Csn2 as signalosome subunits in S. pombe. csn1 and csn2 null mutants are DNA damage sensitive and exhibit slow DNA replication. Two further putative subunits, Csn4 and Csn5, were identified from the S. pombe genome database. Herein, we characterize null mutations of csn4 and csn5 and demonstrate that both genes are required for removal of Nedd8 from the S. pombe cullin Pcu1 and that their protein products associate with Csn1 and Csn2. However, neither csn4 nor csn5 null mutants share the csn1 and csn2 mutant phenotypes. Our data suggest that the subunits of the signalosome cannot be considered as a distinct functional unit and imply that different subunits of the signalosome mediate distinct functions
Photoelectron spectra of anionic sodium clusters from time-dependent density-functional theory in real-time
We calculate the excitation energies of small neutral sodium clusters in the
framework of time-dependent density-functional theory. In the presented
calculations, we extract these energies from the power spectra of the dipole
and quadrupole signals that result from a real-time and real-space propagation.
For comparison with measured photoelectron spectra, we use the ionic
configurations of the corresponding single-charged anions. Our calculations
clearly improve on earlier results for photoelectron spectra obtained from
static Kohn-Sham eigenvalues
Violation of the `Zero-Force Theorem' in the time-dependent Krieger-Li-Iafrate approximation
We demonstrate that the time-dependent Krieger-Li-Iafrate approximation in
combination with the exchange-only functional violates the `Zero-Force
Theorem'. By analyzing the time-dependent dipole moment of Na5 and Na9+, we
furthermore show that this can lead to an unphysical self-excitation of the
system depending on the system properties and the excitation strength.
Analytical aspects, especially the connection between the `Zero-Force Theorem'
and the `Generalized-Translation Invariance' of the potential, are discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Dust rings and filaments around the isolated young star V1331 Cygni
We characterize the small and large scale environment of the young star V1331
Cygni with high resolution HST/WFPC2 and Digitized Sky Survey images. In
addition to a previously known outer dust ring (~30'' in diameter), the
HST/WFPC2 scattered light image reveals an inner dust ring for the first time.
This ring has a maximum radius of 6.5'' and is possibly related to a molecular
envelope. Large-scale optical images show that V1331 Cyg is located at the tip
of a long dust filament linking it to the dark cloud LDN 981. We discuss the
origin of the observed dust morphology and analyze the object's relation to its
parent dark cloud LDN 981. Finally, based on recent results from the
literature, we investigate the properties of V1331 Cyg and conclude that in its
current state the object does not show suffcient evidence to be characterized

STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECTS OF MIXING POTATO VARIETIES ON LATE BLIGHT
A field study in two regions of Peru was conducted to determine how host-diversity effects on potato late blight varied geographically. Foliar disease severity was evaluated separately for the potato varieties in mixtures as well as in the single-variety plots. The TAUDPC (truncated area under the disease progress curve) and RMR (relative mixture response) for each site were analyzed separately using SAS mixed effects model procedures. While there was little difference between the sites in the 1997-1998 season, host-diversity effects were generally greater near Huancayo than near Cajamarca in the 1998-1999 season. Estimates of host-diversity effects from studies in Oregon and Ecuador were also compared with results for Peru. Host-diversity effects for reduced disease were generally greater for sites where we predicted lower levels of outside inoculum
The Randomized Shortened Dental Arch Study: Tooth Loss
The evidence concerning the management of shortened dental arch (SDA) cases is sparse. This multi-center study was aimed at generating data on outcomes and survival rates for two common treatments, removable dental prostheses (RDP) for molar replacement or no replacement (SDA). The hypothesis was that the treatments lead to different incidences of tooth loss. We included 215 patients with complete molar loss in one jaw. Molars were either replaced by RDP or not replaced, according to the SDA concept. First tooth loss after treatment was the primary outcome measure. This event occurred in 13 patients in the RDP group and nine patients in the SDA group. The respective Kaplan-Meier survival rates at 38 months were 0.83 (95% CI: 0.74-0.91) in the RDP group and 0.86 (95% CI: 0.78-0.95) in the SDA group, the difference being non-significant
Vacuum-field level shifts in a single trapped ion mediated by a single distant mirror
A distant mirror leads to a vacuum-induced level shift in a laser-excited
atom. This effect has been measured with a single mirror 25 cm away from a
single, trapped barium ion. This dispersive action is the counterpart to the
mirror's dissipative effect, which has been shown earlier to effect a change in
the ion's spontaneous decay [J. Eschner et al., Nature 413, 495-498 (2001)].
The experimental data are well described by 8-level optical Bloch equations
which are amended to take into account the presence of the mirror according to
the model in [U. Dorner and P. Zoller, Phys. Rev. A 66, 023816 (2002)].
Observed deviations from simple dispersive behavior are attributed to

Velocity Field Statistics in Star-Forming Regions. I. Centroid Velocity Observations
The probability density functions (pdfs) of molecular line centroid velocity
fluctuations and fluctuation differences at different spatial lags are
estimated for several nearby molecular clouds with active internal star
formation. The data consist of over 75,000 CO line profiles divided
among twelve spatially and/or kinematically distinct regions. Although three
regions (all in Mon R2) appear nearly Gaussian, the others show strong evidence
for non-Gaussian, often nearly exponential, centroid velocity pdfs, possibly
with power law contributions in the far tails. Evidence for nearly exponential
centroid pdfs in the neutral HI component of the ISM is also presented, based
on older optical and radio observations. These results are in contrast to pdfs
found in isotropic incompressible turbulence experiments and simulations.
Furthermore, no evidence is found for the scaling of difference pdf kurtosis
with Reynolds number which is seen in incompressible turbulence, and the
spatial distribution of high-amplitude velocity differences shows little
indication of the filamentary appearance predicted by decay simulations
dominated by vortical interactions. The variation with lag of the difference

HST/NICMOS Imaging of Disks and Envelopes Around Very Young Stars
We present HST/NICMOS observations with 0.1" (15 AU) resolution of six young
stellar objects in the Taurus star-formation region. The targets of our survey
are three Class I IRAS sources (IRAS 04016+2610, IRAS 04248+2612, and IRAS
04302+2247) and three low-luminosity stars (DG Tau B, Haro 6-5B, and CoKu
Tau/1) associated with Herbig Haro jets. The broad-band images show that the
near-infrared radiation from these sources is dominated by light scattered from
dusty circumstellar material distributed in a region 10 - 15 times the size of
our solar system. Although the detailed morphologies of the individual objects
are unique, the observed young stellar objects share common features. All of
the circumstellar reflection nebulae are crossed by dark lanes from 500 - 900
AU in extent and from less than 50 to 350 AU in apparent thickness. The
absorption lanes extend perpendicular to known optical and millimeter outflows
in these sources. We interpret the dark lanes as optically thick circumstellar
disks seen in silhouette against bright reflection nebulosity. The bipolar
reflection nebulae extending perpendicular to the dust lanes appear to be
produced by scattering from the upper and lower surfaces of the disks and from
dusty material within or on the walls of the outflow cavities. Out of five
objects in which the central source is directly detected, two are found to be
subarcsecond binaries. This mini-survey is the highest resolution near-infrared
study to date of circumstellar environments around solar-type stars with age <=
