    Association between Socio-Demographic Factors and Owners’ Beliefs and Attitudes to Pet Cats Fundamental Dietary and Physical Exercise Needs, in City of Belfast

    A cross-sectional survey questionnaire was developed in-house to investigate pet cat owners’ beliefs and attitudes related to the fundamental care of their pet cats. The questionnaire consisted of questions which were grouped into the following sections: (i) owners’ socio-demographics; (ii) cat(s) body weight and body condition monitoring; (iii) owners’ attitudes to cats’ dietary preferences, needs and satisfaction, (iv) owners’ perceptions of their cats’ physical exercise needs and satisfaction. The sample size of 376 was estimated to be required to represent the population of the given geographical location (Belfast, NI, UK). Hard copies of the questionnaires were distributed in January and February 2019 and in total 402 completed questionnaires were collected; questionnaires which included >20% of missing or incomprehensible responses were excluded from the database, resulting in 398 questionnaires being included in the final database. The study identified a number of socio-demographic factors associated with owners’ beliefs and attitudes that directly affect care provided to pet cats, e.g., the owner’s occupation has been identified as a factor associated with owner perception of certain cats’ behaviours, e.g., a cat brushing against the owner as food requests by their animal (Chi-Square 7.711 (df1), exact p = 0.006). Furthermore, most female respondents, aged 26–67 years and in an occupation not related to animals, reported selecting cat food based on their animal preferences (Chi-Square 10.332 (df1), exact p = 0.003). In contrast, female owners in animal and veterinary occupations were significantly more likely as compared to other respondents (Chi-Square 15.228 (df1), exact p < 0.001), to select cat food based on its perceived health benefit to the cat. Analysis of the respondents’ opinions of cats’ abilities to self-regulate physical activity showed that owners age was the main differentiating determinant, i.e., cat owners over 25 years old were significantly more likely than younger adults to believe that pet cats can regulate their own physical activity to keep healthy (Chi-Square 6.313 (df1), exact p = 0.025). Furthermore, respondents’ opinions of their cat’s ability to self-regulate feed intake were mainly associated with owner’s education level (Chi-Square 6.367 (df1), exact p = 0.036). The study results indicated that the attitude and beliefs behind the fundamental care practices provided to pet cats depends on particular demographic factors, especially owners’ education and occupation

    Maternal serum cytokine concentrations in healthy pregnancy and preeclampsia

    The maternal immune response is essential for successful pregnancy, promoting immune tolerance to the fetus while maintaining innate and adaptive immunity. Uncontrolled, increased proinflammatory responses are a contributing factor to the pathogenesis of preeclampsia. The Th1/Th2 cytokine shift theory, characterised by bias production of Th2 anti-inflammatory cytokine midgestation, was frequently used to reflect the maternal immune response in pregnancy. This theory is simplistic as it is based on limited information and does not consider the role of other T cell subsets, Th17 and Tregs. A range of maternal peripheral cytokines have been measured in pregnancy cohorts, albeit the changes in individual cytokine concentrations across gestation is not well summarised. Using available data, this review was aimed at summarising changes in individual maternal serum cytokine concentrations throughout healthy pregnancy and evaluating their association with preeclampsia. We report that TNF-α increases as pregnancy progresses, IL-8 decreases in the second trimester, and IL-4 concentrations remain consistent throughout gestation. Lower second trimester IL-10 concentrations may be an early predictor for developing preeclampsia. Proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-2, IL-8, and IL-6) are significantly elevated in preeclampsia. More research is required to determine the usefulness of using cytokines, particularly IL-10, as early biomarkers of pregnancy health

    Association between adiposity and iron status in women of reproductive age: data from the UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey 2008-2019 (NDNS):Data from the UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS) 2008–2019

    BACKGROUND: Overweight/obesity and iron deficiency are highly prevalent in women of reproductive age (WRA), impacting on women's health. Obesity is a risk factor for nutritional deficiencies but its association with iron deficiency is unclear.OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between adiposity and markers of iron status and iron deficiency prevalence in WRA.METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed the National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS, 2008-2019) data, focusing on women aged 18-49y with BMI ≥18.5 kg/m 2. Prevalence of anemia, Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA), and Iron Deficiency (ID) were analyzed. Ferritin was adjusted for C-reactive protein. Iron status was assessed across high and low BMI, waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height (WHtR), and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). Chi 2, linear and logistic regression were performed adjusting for covariates. RESULTS: Among 1,098 WRA, 496 normal weight and 602 overweight/obesity, prevalence rates were: anemia 9.2% and IDA 6.8%. Anemia was more prevalent in those with higher WHtR and WHR (11.9% vs 5.9% and 16.7% vs 6.5%, both p&lt;0.001). WRA with increased WC, WHtR, and WHR had higher IDA prevalence than those with lower adiposity. (8.5% vs 4.3%, p=0.005; 9.4% vs 3.3%, p&lt;0.001; 12.1% vs 4.9%, p&lt;0.001). ID prevalence was 49.7% (ferritin cut-off 30 μg/L) and 19.6% (ferritin cut-off 15 μg/L), showing similar rates across adiposity groups. ID prevalence defined by soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) was higher in women with increased WHR (p=0.001). Higher WHR predicted ID categorized by sTfR (aOR 2.104, p=0.004), and WHtR and WHR predicted anemia and IDA (anemia: WHtR aOR 2.006 p=0.036; WHR aOR 4.489 p&lt;0.001; IDA: WHtR: aOR 2.942, p=0.012; WHR aOR 4.142, p&lt;0.001).CONCLUSIONS: At least one in five WRA in the UK are iron deficient, highlighting the need to revise current policies. Greater central adiposity was strongly associated with impaired iron status and the development of anemia, IDA, and ID.</p

    Associations between maternal thyroid function in pregnancy and child neurodevelopmental outcomes at 20 months in the Seychelles Child Development Study, Nutrition Cohort 2 (SCDS NC2)

    Maternal thyroid hormones facilitate optimal foetal neurodevelopment; however, the exact role of the thyroid hormones on specific cognitive outcomes is unknown. The present study aimed to investigate associations between maternal thyroid function and neurodevelopmental outcomes in the Seychelles Child Development Study (SCDS) Nutrition 2 cohort (n 1328). Maternal free thyroid hormones (fT3, fT4 and fTSH) were assessed at 28 weeks’ gestation with a range of child cognitive outcomes analysed at 20 months. Dietary iodine intake was analysed for a subset of women through a Food Frequency Questionnaire. Linear regression analysis was used to test associations between serum concentrations of maternal thyroid hormones and child neurodevelopment outcomes. Thyroid hormones were analysed as continuous data and categorised as quintiles. 95% of mothers had optimal thyroid function based on fTSH concentrations. Overall, the present study shows that maternal thyroid function is not associated with neurodevelopmental outcomes in this high fish-eating population. However, a positive association, using quintiles for fT3, was reported for the Mental Developmental Index, between Q3 v. Q4 (β 0⋅073; P 0⋅043) and for Q3 v. Q5 (β value 0⋅086; P 0⋅018). To conclude, mothers in our cohort, who largely have optimal thyroid function and iodine intakes, appear able to regulate thyroid function throughout pregnancy to meet neurodevelopmental needs. However, it is possible that minor imbalances of fT3, as indicated from our secondary analysis, may impact offspring neurodevelopment. Further investigation of the relationship between maternal thyroid function and infant neurodevelopment is warranted, particularly in populations with different dietary patterns and thereby iodine intakes
