    Proteins in biomass streams

    Get PDF
The focus of this study is to give an overview of traditional and new biomasses and biomass streams that contain proteins. When information was available, the differences in molecular structure and physical and chemical properties for the different proteins is given. For optimal biomass use, isolation of valuable compounds like proteins can be an important aspect. To make decisions possible if biorefinery strategies by which the isolation of proteins is feasible, the economical value and production volumes of the different biomass streams will be discussed (when available). Also the industrial relevance and possible applications, such as technical applications and chemicals derived from proteins, will be reported. In addition, the outlet of protein-rich biomass resources in the feed sector will be pointed out

De relatie tussen etniciteit en tevredenheid met de woonomgeving - Een onderzoek onder autochtonen, Surinamers, Turken en Marokkanen in Nederland

Using data from the Netherlands Housing Survey 2006 (WoON) and neighborhood data from Statistics Netherlands, we investigate the relationship between individual ethnicity and ethnic neighborhood composition on the one hand, and satisfaction with the residential environment on the other, among the four largest ethnic categories in the Netherlands. We set three theoretical approaches next to each other and derive hypotheses from each. The class approach states that ethnic differences in residential satisfaction are caused by differences in socio-economic status. The race approach states that these differences are caused by discrimination. The culture approach states that there are cultural differences in residential preferences, leading to differences between ethnic groups in the way in which ethnic neighborhood composition affects residential satisfaction. We find that those of Dutch origin are the most satisfied with the neighborhood, and Turks and Moroccans the least. These differences in satisfaction largely disappear after controlling for socio-economic status. This result is in line with the class approach, and in contrast with the race approach. In line with the culture approach, the ethnic composition of the neighborhood plays a role in residential satisfaction. Native Dutch in particular seem to prefer living in residential environments with few non-western immigrants

Intranasal cold dry air is superior to histamine challenge in determining the presence and degree of nasal hyperreactivity in nonallergic noninfectious perennial rhinitis

The objective of the study was to compare cold dry air (CDA) and histamine in differentiating patients with nonallergic noninfectious perennial rhinitis (NANIPER) from control subjects. Nasal reactivity (nasal patency, mucus production, and sneezing) in 16 symptomatic nonsmoking patients with NANIPER and seven nonsmoking control subjects was measured with standardized CDA and histamine provocation series in a randomized crossover study. Intranasal CDA resulted in increased mucus production and nasal blockage in a dose-dependent manner in patients with NANIPER but not in control subjects. Sneezing did not occur. The reproducibility of CDA for patency and mucus production was good. Sen

The effect of nasal steroid aqueous spray on nasal complaint scores and cellular infiltrates in the nasal mucosa of patients with nonallergic, noninfectious perennial rhinitis

Topical corticosteroids are the therapy of choice for nonallergic, noninfectious perennial rhinitis (NANIPER). However, the efficacy of steroid therapy in NANIPER is controversial, as is its mode of action. To our surprise, of 300 patients initially diagnosed as having NANIPER, only 65 reached threshold nasal symptom scores. Patients were randomized into four different treatment regimens: placebo administered twice daily (BD) for 8 weeks, fluticasone propionate aqueous nasal spray (FPANS) (200 microg) once daily (OD) and placebo OD for 8 weeks, FPANS (200 microg) OD and placebo OD for 4 weeks followed by FPANS (200 microg) BD for 4 weeks, and FPANS (200 microg) BD for 8 weeks. A small decrease in nasal symptoms was found, which only reached significance for sneezing in the FPANS 200 microg BD group. A significant dose-dependent decrease in immunocompetent cells was found in nasal biopsy specimens obtained before, after 4 weeks, and after 8 weeks of treatment. We conclude that FPANS did not significantly reduce nasal symptoms in this group of selected NANIPER patients, even though a significant effect on cells in the nasal mucosa was see

Growth hormone treatment in children with short stature born small for gestational age: 5-year results of a randomized, double-blind, dose-response trial

The growth-promoting effect of continuous GH treatment was evaluated over 5 yr in 79 children with short stature (height SD score, less than -1.88) born small for gestational age (SGA; birth length SD score, less than -1.88). Patients were randomly and blindly assigned to 1 of 2 GH dosage groups (3 vs. 6 IU/m2 body surface-day). GH deficiency was not an exclusion criterium. After 5 yr of GH treatment almost every child had reached a height well within the normal range for healthy Dutch children and in the range of their target height SD score. Only in children who remained prepubertal during the study period was the 5-yr increase in height SD score (HSDS) for chronological age significantly higher in the study group receiving 6 compared to 3 IU GH/m2 x day. Remarkably, the 5-yr increment in HSDS for chronological age was not related to spontaneous GH secretion, maximum GH levels after provocation, or baseline insulin-like growth factor I levels. GH treatment was associated with an acceleration of bone maturation regardless of the GH dose given. The HSDS for bone age and predicted adult height increased significantly. GH treatment was well tolerated. In conclusion, our 5-yr data show that long term continuous GH treatment at a dose of 3 or 6 IU/m2 x day in short children born SGA results in a normalization of height during childhood followed by growth along the target height percentile
