    The Fractional Quantum Hall effect in an array of quantum wires

    Full text link
    We demonstrate the emergence of the quantum Hall (QH) hierarchy in a 2D model of coupled quantum wires in a perpendicular magnetic field. At commensurate values of the magnetic field, the system can develop instabilities to appropriate inter-wire electron hopping processes that drive the system into a variety of QH states. Some of the QH states are not included in the Haldane-Halperin hierarchy. In addition, we find operators allowed at any field that lead to novel crystals of Laughlin quasiparticles. We demonstrate that any QH state is the groundstate of a Hamiltonian that we explicitly construct.Comment: Revtex, 4 pages, 2 figure

    A low-cost sensing system for quality monitoring of dairy products

    Get PDF
    The dairy industry is in need of a cost-effective, highly reliable, very accurate, and fast measurement system to monitor the quality of dairy products. This paper describes the design and fabrication works undertaken to develop such a system. The techniques used center around planar electromagnetic sensors operating with radio frequency excitation. Computer-aided computation, being fast, facilitates on-line monitoring of the quality. The sensor technology proposed has the ability to perform volumetric penetrative measurements to measure properties throughout the bulk of the product

    Compact bifluid hybrid stars: Hadronic Matter mixed with self-interacting fermionic Asymmetric Dark Matter

    Full text link
    The masses and radii of non-rotating and rotating configurations of pure hadronic stars mixed with self-interacting fermionic Asymmetric Dark Matter are calculated within the two-fluid formalism of stellar structure equations in general relativity. The Equation of State (EoS) of nuclear matter is obtained from the density dependent M3Y effective nucleon-nucleon interaction. We consider dark matter particle mass of 1 GeV. The EoS of self-interacting dark matter is taken from two-body repulsive interactions of the scale of strong interactions. We explore the conditions of equal and different rotational frequencies of nuclear matter and dark matter and find that the maximum mass of differentially rotating stars with self-interacting dark matter to be ∼1.94M⊙\sim 1.94 M_\odot with radius ∼10.4\sim 10.4 kms.Comment: 9 pages including 1 table & 8 figure

    A Precise Determination of the Pion-Nuclear Coupling Parameter from Weak Processes in 3He^3{He}

    Get PDF
    We utilize precise weak interaction experiments on atomic muon capture and beta decay in the A = 3 nuclei, and take into account the effects of nuclear "anomalous thresholds" to extract the pseudoscalar pi-^3He-^3H coupling parameter, G^{eff}(m_\pi^2) = 45.8+- 2.4. This is an order of magnitude improvement in precision over that from the use of pion-nuclear scattering data and dispersion relations
