    Relationship between Cariogenic Bacteria and pH of Dental Plaque at Margin of Fixed Prostheses

    Objective. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether teeth that have undergone prosthetic restoration are under conditions that promote caries recurrence. Methods. The subjects were 20 dentate adults with both a healthy tooth and an affected tooth entirely covered with a complete cast crown in the molar regions of the same arch. The pH was measured in plaque adhering to the margin of the tooth covered with a complete cast crown and adhering to the cervicobuccal area of the natural tooth. In addition, the numbers of cariogenic bacteria (mutans streptococci and lactobacilli) were measured employing the saliva test. The relationships between the number of cariogenic bacteria and plaque pH of the natural tooth and between the number of cariogenic bacteria and plaque pH of the tooth covered with a complete cast crown were investigated. Results. The plaque pH of the tooth covered with a complete cast crown decreased as the numbers of SM and LB increased. The natural tooth were also influenced by the number of SM. Conclusion. Secondary caries are likely to develop from the marginal region of the crown in the oral cavity with a high caries risk unless a preventive program is prepared and the oral environment is improved following the program

    Optical Levitation of a Droplet under Linear Increase of Gravitational Acceleration

    Optical levitation of a liquid droplet in gas phase was investigated under timedependent change of the gravitational acceleration with specific flight pattern of an airplane. Through multiple trials under linear increase of effective gravitational acceleration, we performed the experiment of ptical trapping of a droplet from 0.3g_0 to 0.9g_0, where g_0 = 9.8 m/s^2. During such change of the effective gravitational acceleration, the trapping position on a droplet with the radius of 14 μm was found to be lowered by ca. 100 μm. The essential feature of the change of the trapping position is reproduced by a theoretical calculation under the framework of ray optics. As far as we know, the present study is the first report on optical levitation under time-dependent gravitational change

    The potential hazard of a non-slip element balloon causing distal longitudinal stent deformation: the first clinical experience and in vitro assessment

    Background: A new complication, longitudinal stent deformation (LSD), is increasingly reported withrecent intracoronary stent designs. There have been experiences of unusual cases of distal LSD causedby entrapment of a Lacrosse® non-slip element (NSE) balloon (Goodman Co., Ltd., Nagoya, Japan),which has three flexible nylon elements to prevent slippage. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to reportthe clinical experience of distal LSD caused by the NSE in the documented center and to investigate theincidence and mechanisms involved.Methods: Coronary intervention cases were retrospectively reviewed using the NSE balloon in hospitalbetween May 2014 and June 2017. In bench testing, distal LSD was reproduced in a silicon tube modelto identify its mechanism.Results: A total of 95 patients with 107 lesions underwent coronary interventions with NSE. Of these,72 lesions (12 de-novo lesions and 60 in-stent restenosis) were treated using in-stent dilatation. Twodistal LSD cases occurred, representing an incidence of 2.78% (2/72) among all procedures; 16.7%(2/12) of the de-novo lesions developed LSD. In vitro experimentation allowed indentification of themechanisms involved and bailout strategies.Conclusions: This is the first study to evaluate NSE balloon catheter entrapment complicated by distalLSD in which reconstruction of the deformed stent and retrieval of the NSE could be achieved successfully.There is a potential hazard for distal LSD during post-dilatation using the NSE balloon due to itsstructural characteristics. Careful assessment is needed to prevent this complication

    Termination of Graphene Edges Created by Hydrogen and Deuterium Plasmas

    Edge engineering is important for both fundamental research and applications as the device size decreases to nanometer scale. This is especially the case for graphene because a graphene edge shows totally different electronic properties depending on the atomic structure and the termination. It has recently been shown that an atomically precise zigzag edge can be obtained by etching graphene and graphite using hydrogen (H) plasma. However, edge termination had not been studied directly. In this study, termination of edges created by H-plasma is studied by high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) to show that the edge is sp2\mathrm{sp}^{2} bonded and the edge carbon atom is terminated by only one H atom. This suggests that an ideal zigzag edge, which is not only atomically precise but also sp2\mathrm{sp}^{2} bonding, can be obtained by H-plasma etching. Etching of the graphite surface with plasma of a different isotope, deuterium (D), is also studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to show that D-plasma anisotropically etches graphite less efficiently, although it can make defects more efficiently, than H-plasma.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    Rapid detection of hypoxia-inducible factor-1-active tumours: pretargeted imaging with a protein degrading in a mechanism similar to hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha

    PURPOSE: Hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) plays an important role in malignant tumour progression. For the imaging of HIF-1-active tumours, we previously developed a protein, POS, which is effectively delivered to and selectively stabilized in HIF-1-active cells, and a radioiodinated biotin derivative, (3-(123)I-iodobenzoyl)norbiotinamide ((123)I-IBB), which can bind to the streptavidin moiety of POS. In this study, we aimed to investigate the feasibility of the pretargeting method using POS and (123)I-IBB for rapid imaging of HIF-1-active tumours. METHODS: Tumour-implanted mice were pretargeted with POS. After 24 h, (125)I-IBB was administered and subsequently, the biodistribution of radioactivity was investigated at several time points. In vivo planar imaging, comparison between (125)I-IBB accumulation and HIF-1 transcriptional activity, and autoradiography were performed at 6 h after the administration of (125)I-IBB. The same sections that were used in autoradiographic analysis were subjected to HIF-1alpha immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: (125)I-IBB accumulation was observed in tumours of mice pretargeted with POS (1.6%ID/g at 6 h). This result is comparable to the data derived from (125)I-IBB-conjugated POS-treated mice (1.4%ID/g at 24 h). In vivo planar imaging provided clear tumour images. The tumoral accumulation of (125)I-IBB significantly correlated with HIF-1-dependent luciferase bioluminescence (R=0.84, p<0.01). The intratumoral distribution of (125)I-IBB was heterogeneous and was significantly correlated with HIF-1alpha-positive regions (R=0.58, p<0.0001). CONCLUSION: POS pretargeting with (123)I-IBB is a useful technique in the rapid imaging and detection of HIF-1-active regions in tumours

    Near-Infrared and X-Ray Observations of XSS J12270-4859

    XSS J12270-4859 (J12270) is an enigmatic source of unknown nature. Previous studies revealed that the source has unusual X-ray temporal characteristics, including repetitive short-term flares followed by spectral hardening, non-periodic dips, and dichotomy in activity; i.e. intervals filled with flares and those without. Together with a power-law X-ray spectrum, it is suggested to be a low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB). In order to better understand the object, we present the results of our near-infrared (NIR) photometry and linear polarimetry observations as well as X-ray spectroscopy observations, which overlap with each other partially in time, taken respectively with the InfraRed Survey Facility (IRSF) and the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). We detected several simultaneous NIR and X-ray flares for the first time. No significant NIR polarization was obtained. We assembled data taken with IRSF, RXTE, Suzaku, Swift, and other missions in the literature and compared the flare profile and the spectral energy distribution (SED) with some representative high-energy sources. Based on some similarities of the repetitive NIR and X-ray flaring characteristics and the broad SED, we argue that J12270 is reminiscent of microquasars with a synchrotron jet, which is at a very low luminosity state of ~1e-4 Eddington luminosity for a stellar mass black hole or neutron star at a reference distance of 1 kpc.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in PAS

    Self-Sustained Divertor Oscillation Driven by Magnetic Island Dynamics in Torus Plasma

    A new type of self-sustained divertor oscillation is discovered in the Large Helical Device stellarator, where the peripheral plasma is detached from material diverters by means of externally applied perturbation fields. The divertor oscillation is found to be a self-regulation of an isolated magnetic field structure (the magnetic island) width induced by a drastic change in a poloidal inhomogeneity of the plasma radiation across the detachment-attachment transitions. A predator-prey model between the magnetic island width and a self-generated local plasma current (the bootstrap current) is introduced to describe the divertor oscillation, which successfully reproduces the experimental observation
