A systematic approach for developments of gas species modelling of a Li-ion battery cell induced by thermal runaway event

The ever-increasing demands in Lithium-ion battery (LIBs) technology have become the pinnacle for the energy storage industry. LIBs cover wide range of application, from small portable devices such as mobile phones and laptops, to larger applications e.g. power grids and transport. To meet these energy demands, research has focused much resource on developing cell technologies that can fulfil the requirements. As a result, today’s LIB technology has much higher magnitudes of energy and power density, in comparison to those first introduced back in 1991 to power a video camera. However, there are associated consequences that come with these increased attributes. That each cell can now store higher energy, this in turn can result in the LIB failure mode becoming more severe in effect. The worst-case scenario is a condition in which a cell rapidly ignites – an event known as a thermal runaway (TR). This topic has attracted profound attention in battery safety research. Research into battery safety has always been one of the prime topics when developing new LIBs. A considerable amount of research has been previously performed experimentally and by simulation work. However, there is a significant gap identified in the simulation domain, as there is insufficient research on gas species modelling at cell level during thermal runaway. This is especially so in the early phases of the reaction sequence. This thesis proposes a systematic approach method development around gas species modelling. Based on the literature review conducted, the development methods require the establishment of a basic electrochemical model, in which sensitive parameters are identified through characterisation methods such as SEM/EDS, XRD, particle analysis, and STA/FTIR. For model development, P2D electrochemical and thermal abuse modelling was used as a basis to be incorporated with the gas species model. The gas model was developed based on a neural-network (NN) learning approach. The result from cell characterization reveals that the material used in the cell was the same as some research which utilized the same cell material. For gas analysis results, an interesting finding was observed, which is the time for the cell to reach onset temperature after it was gassing are consistent regardless the cell SOC. Also reported in this thesis is the species of gas detected during the venting stages. In addition to these findings, the same observation from literature results were also apparent. This includes the effect of cell SOC towards maximum temperature during TR event and the shift of onset temperature to lower temperature as the SOC increase

Background: Obstructive uropathy refers to the structural impedance to the flow of urine anywhere along the urinary tract which may result from congenital (anatomic) lesions or can be caused by trauma, neoplasia, calculi, inflatnmatory process or surgical procedure. It is responsible for about 4% of end-stage renal disease. Obstructive uropathy is invariably associated with some co-morbid conditions specially infection.Objecctive: This study was conducted in the department of pediatric nephrology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Shahbag, Dhaka, Bangladesh with an objective to identify different pattern of infections in children with obstructive uropathy. Methods: A total of 55 patients of obstructive uropathy were enrolled. Thorough clinical and laboratory evaluation including hematological, biochemical, radiological and radio nucleotide imaging were done along with blood and urine culture. Result: Out of 55 cases, 42.27% of obstructive uropathy was detected between I to 5 years and 89.27% was infected. Among obstructive uropathy cases, majority had posterior urethral valve (PUV) (42.27%). Urinary tract infection was the commonest (60%) type of infections followed by septicemia and respiratory tract infection. Conclusion: Age between 1 to 5 years was the commonest age of children for hospital admission due to obstructive uropathy. Among various manifestations of obstructive uropatby, infections, mostly urinary tract infection was the commonest one

BACKGROUND: In 2007, Ontario launched a colon cancer screening program for average-risk individuals based on biennial fecal occult blood tests (FOBTs) on three fecal samples, followed by colonoscopy for individuals who tested positive. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether >1 positive screening FOBT was predictive of finding advanced neoplasia at colonoscopy. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of outpatient colonoscopic procedures performed at Hotel Dieu Hospital (Kingston, Ontario) in the first two years of the colon cancer screening program was conducted, focusing on endoscopic and pathological findings. RESULTS: Of 5556 individuals undergoing colonoscopy, 346 were referred for positive FOBT. Overall, 41 (11.8%) patients with a positive FOBT had colon cancer. In 16 (4.6%) cases, the number of positive FOBTs was not reported. For the 330 individuals in whom the number of positive tests was specified, 198, 71 and 61 cases had one, two and three positive results, respectively. Cancer was found at colonoscopy in 11 (5.6%), 11 (15.5%) and 18 (29.5%) of individuals with one, two and three positive FOBT results, respectively (OR 3.0 [95% CI 1.2 to 7.3] and 6.5 [95% CI 2.8 to 15.0] for two or three positive FOBTs compared with one; P=0.015 and P<0.001, respectively). High-risk adenomas (>1 cm in diameter, villous component and/or high-grade dysplasia) were found in 41 (20.8%), 29 (42.0%) and 25 (41.0%) individuals with one, two and three positive FOBTs, respectively (OR 2.8 [95% CI 1.5 to 5.0] and 2.4 [95% CI 1.3 to 4.5] for two or three positive FOBTs compared with one; P=0.001 and P=0.006, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The diagnostic yield of colonoscopy varied directly with the number of positive FOBTs. This information may be useful in assigning scheduling priority for patients with positive FOBTs

Use of Recombinant Human Erythropoietin in Renal Anemia in Children

    Get PDF
Erythropoietin is a hormone highly effective as like as natural erythropoietin to maintain target hemoglobin and hematocrit level in renal anemia. Its advantage over blood transfusion has been proved by improving the quality of life and decreasing morbidity and mortality in ESRD patients. Effectiveness of r-erythropoietin depends on absences of infection, inflammation and vitamin deficiency and iron status. Iron supplementation is needed before r-erythropoietin administration and sub-cutaneous rout is better in renal anemia because of slow and sustained releases of r-erythropoietin from the site of administration. Target hemoglobin level is 11-12.5 gm/dl and hematocrit is 33% which can be achieved by this hormone therapy. Key words- Recombinant erythropoietin, renal anemia, end stage renal disease.DOI: 10.3329/bsmmuj.v2i1.3713 BSMMU J 2009; 2(1): 50-53 &nbsp

    Get PDF
In this paper, a new efficient image retrieval system using sequential process of three stages with filtering technique for the feature selection is proposed. In the first stage the color features are extracted using color histogram method and in the second stage the texture features are obtained using log-Gabor filters and in the third stage shape features are extracted using shape descriptors using polygonal fitting algorithm. The proposed log-Gabor filter in the second stage has advantages of retrieving images over regular Gabor filter for texture. It provides better representation of the images. Experimental evaluation of the proposed system shows improved performance in retrieval as compared to other existing systems in terms of average precision and average recall
