An analysis of illocutionary act and its felicity conditions in the karate kid movie

By taking account Searle�s theory, this research focuses on analyzing the illocutionary act and its felicity conditions in The Karate Kid (a movie directed by Harald Zward) The purpose of this research is to get understanding and detailed explanation about the types of illocutionary act and its felicity conditions which are used by characters of The Karate Kid movie. This research is qualitative descriptive. The writer classifies the utterances in the movie by marking or agglomerating those utterances which are presumed into illocutionary act, explains the context of utterances to understand what the speaker means by his utterances, such as explaining the condition, who speaks, to whom the speaker speaks and what the speaker means by saying the utterance, categorizes it based on types of illocutionary act namely representatives, directives, commissives, expressives and declaratives and examines its felicity conditions using Searle�s theory The data analysis revealed some findings covering the formulated research question. It is found that there are four types of illocutionary act which is used by characters in The Karate Kid movie, those are: Directives (8 data with illocutionary forces of order, request, advising, and warning), commissives (4 data with illocutionary forces of promising), expressive (2 data with illocutionary forces of apologizing and thanking), and representatives (1 datum with illocutionary force of asserting). Meanwhile, another type of illocutionary act, declarative, is not found by the writer in the dialogues of the movie. All of illocutionary acts in this research are felicitous except three, those are: DATUM 2 and DATUM 4 (both have illocutionary forces of ordering and advising) are infelicitous for its essential conditions are not fulfilled, DATUM 11 (has illocutionary force of promising) is infelicitous for its sincerity and essential conditions are not fulfille
