    Probability Learning in Prey Selection with a Great Horned Owl and a Red-Tailed Hawk

    The purpose of this study was to examine the hunting strategies of birds of prey in a probability learning situation. One great horned owl and one red-tailed hawk served as subjects. Three boxes and associated perches, each representing different potential prey areas, were placed in a room adjacent to the birds\u27 regular housing and served as test apparatus. One box were required to land on a perch in order to gain access to the associated box and to the potential prey. A discrete-trial, self-correction procedure was used. In Experiment I, Box 1 was loaded with a live laboratory mouse on 60% of the trials, Box 2 on 30% of the trials, and Box 3 on the remaining 10%. A response requirement of sitting on the perch 5 seconds was programmed. In experiment II, the probability of reinforcement was reversed for the 10 and 60% boxes and the response requirement was increased from 5 to 20 seconds. Experiment III returned the probability of reinforcement for each box to the values used in Experiment I. In Experiment III the mice were euthanized prior to each trial. The owl matched responses to probability of reinforcement in all three experiments while the hawk matched in Experiment II and showed matching toward two of the three boxes in Experiment III. In Experiment I the hawk had a Box 2 preference. This research extends the generality of the matching concept and suggests that predatory birds do not randomly hunt or hunt in only one location, but rather tend to search according to the probability of reinforcement for that location

As part of a mini-symposium highlighting collaborative research opportunities with the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, this presentation discusses the benefits of human-animal interaction and the need for more rigorous evidence-based conclusions in this field

    Higher Renal Replacement Therapy Dose Delivery Influences on Drug Therapy

    Higher doses of renal replacement therapy have profound effects on pharmacotherapy, yet little research has been conducted in this area. High-volume renal replacement therapies influence both the pharmacokinetic and the pharmacodynamic profiles of all drugs administered to these critically ill patients. Intermittent high-dose “hybrid” hemodialysis therapies remove drugs to a much different degree than standard thrice-weekly hemodialysis, yet pharmacokinetic studies have not been performed in patients receiving these therapies. High-volume continuous renal replacement therapies offer dosing challenges not seen with standard low-dose therapies. This article describes the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic issues presented by high-volume renal replacement therapies. Given the importance that pharmacotherapy has on optimal patient outcomes, a better understanding of the influence that high-volume renal replacement therapy has on drugs is essential if these high volume therapies are to be used successfully in the intensive care unit.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/75000/1/j.1525-1594.2003.07283.x.pd

    The Future of Citizen Science

    There is an emerging trend of democratizing science and schooling within science education that can be characterized as citizen science. We explore the roots of this movement and some current projects to underscore the meaning of citizen science in science and schooling. We show that citizen science, as it is currently conceptualized, does not go far enough to resolve the concerns of communities and environments when considered holistically and when compared with more dynamic and multidimensional ideas for characterizing science. We use the examples of colony collapse disorder (CCD) and emerging trends of nanotechnology as cases in point. Then we justify three dialogical spheres of influence for future citizen science. As citizen science becomes more holistic, it embodies the responsibility of youths who are prepared to engage real concerns in their community

    Surrogate Optimization of Deep Neural Networks for Groundwater Predictions

    Sustainable management of groundwater resources under changing climatic conditions require an application of reliable and accurate predictions of groundwater levels. Mechanistic multi-scale, multi-physics simulation models are often too hard to use for this purpose, especially for groundwater managers who do not have access to the complex compute resources and data. Therefore, we analyzed the applicability and performance of four modern deep learning computational models for predictions of groundwater levels. We compare three methods for optimizing the models' hyperparameters, including two surrogate model-based algorithms and a random sampling method. The models were tested using predictions of the groundwater level in Butte County, California, USA, taking into account the temporal variability of streamflow, precipitation, and ambient temperature. Our numerical study shows that the optimization of the hyperparameters can lead to reasonably accurate performance of all models (root mean squared errors of groundwater predictions of 2 meters or less), but the ''simplest'' network, namely a multilayer perceptron (MLP) performs overall better for learning and predicting groundwater data than the more advanced long short-term memory or convolutional neural networks in terms of prediction accuracy and time-to-solution, making the MLP a suitable candidate for groundwater prediction.Comment: submitted to Journal of Global Optimization; main paper: 25 pages, 19 figures, 1 table; online supplement: 11 pages, 18 figures, 3 table

    Pre dialysis of blood prime in continuous hemodialysis normalizes pH and electrolytes

    In critically ill children weighing 20 mEq/l were normalized to below 5 mEq/l within 7.5 min of dialysis in all cases. Blood bank-derived blood can be “conditioned” quickly to physiological pH and electrolyte concentrations using these simple pre-dialysis regimens.
