Country Differences In The Attainment of Goal One of The United Nations Millenium Development Goals Across Developing Countries: The Case of Uganda and Indonesia

Millennium development goals are in line with the development theory (Greg, Hulme & Turner, 2007). The pace at which nations are on track to achieve the millennium development goals seems to be different across nations. The pace at which different countries have attained the MDGs is quite different. This article shows that at a 5% significance level, the population growth rates, the levels of corruption and government expenditure on agriculture have varying effects on the attainment of MDG one in Uganda and Indonesia. Knowledge Management in Universities in Uganda: A Social Perspective

The study aimed at assessing the extent society been transformed using a cross sectional co-relational survey design and non standardized and adopted questionnaires administered to two private universities and students offering IT courses in third year (320); hence stratification. A construct validity index of 0.81 and a Cronbach alpha co-efficient of 0.75 deemed the instrument of quality. Results show that there was a significant effect of psychological attachment on knowledge management and an averagely negative relationship between knowledge management and society transformation (-0.53). Conclusively, universities should mingle with society to create room for graduates to acquaint themselves with problem solving approaches than leaving them as moving objects full of concepts and content with little or no application. The researcher thus recommends as follows: i) Institute knowledge workers in every faculty; ii) Arrange knowledge sharing forum for both students and lecturers; iii) Arrange for exchange programs with sister institutions; iv) Put awards for active knowledge workers; and v) The teaching paradigm should orient students towards problem based learning. Effectiveness of a Proposed System Design on Academic Management of Kampala International University: Design, Development and Implementation

This study aimed at answering questions concerning the significant effect of the proposed system design on the academic management of KIU in terms of supportability, reliability, maintainability and availability. Using a quasi-experimental design on a total sample of 750 respondents (i.e. the Users, Academic Staff and Students) and t-sample test, the study revealed that there was a significant effect by the proposed design on the academic management system. The study thus recommends that all stakeholders should be trained to interact and use it which will save a lot of time for the students, academic staff and university branches in processing academic data. Integrating ICT in Library Management: Design and Development of an Automated Library Management System for Cavendish University Uganda

This study intended to solicit requirements for a proposed library information system and develop it for CUU as a step to automate its library services.  The study employed prototyping method to come up with the system. The system met most of the objectives by enabling the library staff keep track of its clients and resources they manage.  Report generation was made easy as all the information has become easier to manipulate due to the nature of electronic storage.   Searching for reading material has been made easy since different criteria may be used to accomplish the task. The interfaces were user friendly and there was no need for retraining other than orientation. The researcher recommends that this system be continuously built to take care of other library services which include management of the serials and periodicals, book reservations, automatic email notification for reminders, use of bar codes, scanners and labels;  and use of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification ) tags to mitigate book thefts.  It is also recommended that the library system, go online so that books and lecture notes are accessed over the internet by users. Analysis of Supporting Communication as a Correlate of Online Consumer Decision Process in Municipal Local government of Kano State, Nigeria

Consumer decision making process is an important aspect of business management, both managers and academicians strive to study and understand the conscious processes that underline the decision to purchase a product or service by consumers. This paper is an attempt to study the correlation between supporting communications and how they affect the on-line consumer decision making process in Kano Municipal local government of Kano State. The paper made use of both primary sources of data through the use of researcher designed questionnaires and secondary sources in form of books, journals and articles from the internet. Findings show that such technological advancements are timely, but effort be made to entice users into adoption and use of them; hence recommending further awareness and consideration of Porter’s five forces. Evangelischer Religionsunterricht zwischen Identität und Verständigung

Der Lehrende muss sich im Religionsunterricht täglich im Spannungsfeld von Identität und Verständigung behaupten. Die Welt, in der wir leben, ist vielfältiger, d.h. mulikulturell und multireligiös geworden. Gleichzeitig wird es für den Einzelnen immer wichtiger, seinen ganz individuellen Weg und Platz in dieser sich ausdifferenzierenden Gesellschaft zu finden. Das Bildungssystem und mit ihm der Religionsunterricht ist durch den globalen Wandel neu herausgefordert. Es muss eine tolerante, offene und dennoch nicht konturlose Erziehung gewährleistet sein. In unserem Land ist ‚Religion’ als Lehrfach von gesetzwegen konfessionell ausgerichtet. Die die Eigenheiten der jeweiligen Glaubensgemeinschaft werden so respektiert und geschützt. Das führt allerdings zu der Frage, was dieses ‚Besondere’ ist und was, ganz allgemein, das Wesentliche des Christentums ausmacht. Was vermittelt die schulische Religionslehre zum christlichen Glauben? Oder anders gefragt: Welche ‚Basics’ benötigen die Heranwachsenden von heute, um sich selbst ein Bild von ihrer Religion machen zu können? Welche Grundlagen und Wege vermittelt der aktuelle Religionsunterricht, um die notwendige Verständigung mit Andersdenkenden, Andersgläubigen zu fördern? Diese Arbeit skizziert hierzu in einem ersten Schritt die konstitutive Rahmenbedingungen des Faches und stellt die Position der EKD zum Religionsunterricht im Spannungsfeld von Identität und Verständigung dar (Kapitel 1). Darüber hinaus bildet sie Kategorien, die das Bild und somit die ‚Identität’ des Christentums inhaltlich beschreiben. Diese betreffen vorrangig die Gebiete Sprache, Gottesbezeichnungen, Bibel und Kirche (Kapitel 2). ‚Verständigung’ hingegen heißt im Religionsunterricht meist noch immer die Auseinandersetzung mit nicht christlichen Weltreligionen als Fremdreligionen. Erst in neueren Ansätzen zeigen sich darüber hinaus erste methodische Überlegungen hin zu einem Religionsdialog in der Schule (vgl. Kapitel 3). Für seine Unterrichtspraxis bleibt der Lehrende dennoch darauf angewiesen, dass Richtlinien und Lehrpläne für sein Fach alle notwenigen Aspekte ausreichend berücksichtigen. In der praktischen Umsetzung ist er dabei meist noch auf sich allein gestellt oder abhängig von den ihm zur Verfügung stehenden Unterrichtsmaterialen. Da kein Medium die schulische Praxis jedoch so bestimmt, wie das Schulbuch, analysiert der zweite Teil der Arbeit eine Auswahl neuerer Schulbücher für das Fach der Evangelischen Religionslehre der Sek. I in NRW (Teil 2, Sammlung von exemplarischen Einzelanalysen). Hierfür mussten im Vorfeld nicht nur oben genannte Kategorien definiert, sondern auch geeignete Analysemethoden für die horizontale Gruppenanalyse gefunden werden (Kapitel 4). Durch die Verbindung einer modifizierten Raumanalyse, der Frequenzanalyse und anhand der Erstellung eines die qualitative Inhaltsanalyse leitenden Fragekatalogs ist es gelungen, zahlreiche Daten mit teilweise überraschenden Ergebnissen zu sammeln und auszuwerten (Kapitel 5). So kann diese Arbeit nachweisen, dass zwar alle untersuchten Reihen Ansätze zur ‚Verständigung’ aufweisen, hier in Umfang und Herangehensweise aber deutlich variieren. Insgesamt sind indessen immer Aspekte der ‚Identität’ dominant. Alle vier, der untersuchten Kategorien, wurden als wesentliche Lerninhalte nachgewiesen. ‚Sprache’, speziell Bild- und Symbolsprache, wird dabei in vielen Lehrwerken als Schlüssel zur Religion verstanden und aufgearbeitet. Mit Hilfe der Frequenzanalyse war es darüber hinaus möglich, die Gottesnamen herauszufiltern, die prägnant für das Reden über und von Gott innerhalb der Lehrwerke sind. Die Analyse der Informationen zur Bibel sowie die Erfassung der jeweils im Buch eingesetzten Bibelstellen zeigt auf, welche Sachinformationen der Religionsunterricht hierzu vermittelt und welche biblischen Texte in besonderem Maße unterrichtsrelevant sind bzw. welche nur wenig Beachtung finden. Schließlich veranschaulicht die Charakterisierung des Themenkomplexes ‚Kirche’, wie das Schulbuch theoretische Informationen mit Beispielen gelebten bzw. lebendigen Glaubens verknüpft. Durch ihre Inhalte und ihr Vorgehen gibt die Arbeit dabei nicht nur eine Momentaufnahme des heutigen Religionsunterrichts im Spiegel seiner Schulbücher wider, sondern sie stellt weitergehende Grundlagen und Methoden für einen professionellen, weil sensibilisierten und wissenschaftlich fundierten Umgang mit dem Medium ‚Schulbuch’ zur Verfügung

Integrating ICT in Insurance Management: Design & Development of an Online Insurance System for E. Africa Insurance Company

The insurance industry appears to be lagging behind, as it faces strategic challenges in utilizing the web. The current manual insurance system at Insurance Company of East Africa has not been quite effective in creating awareness of insurance.  The majority of insurers continue to build internet websites that are structured on a corporate orientation rather than customer needs. Customers are left on their own to figure out where they should find useful information. In the E-insurance System we create awareness of information about insurance mode of operation, policies and benefits. Using qualitative research methods like interview and document review the research found the need to develop and E-insurance system to create awareness about insurance to the public. The qualitative research method led to the derivation of the requirements need to develop the E-insurance system. The E-insurance system was developed using PHP, WAMP and MySQL. The data is stored in the insurance database and access to specific information for example viewing of claims is done by authorized users through a secure web interface. The database was designed using MySQL. The user interfaces were designed using html, JavaScript, CSS, PHP and JQuery. Keywords: Insurance, Management System

E-Procurement and Performance of Service Organizations in Uganda

Aiming at establishing the relationship between E-procurement on the performance of selected service organizations in Uganda; researchers used survey design on 202 employees and found that there is a significant relationship between E-procurement and performance of the organizations. This proposition comes as a result of penetration of IT in all aspects of life to the effect that today everything tends to rotate around use of technology. Also to note is that competition compels one to devise means to beat others and technology is the way to go. The researchers thus recommend: i) Government to support service organizations in regards to regulating cyber related vices; ii) Other organizations, other than service organization, should invest wisely in IT to reap its potential profitability; and iii) The whole procurement process should involve as many people as possible as a potential means to human resource planning in an effort to overcome future embarrassments of retrench and labor turn over
