We construct examples of non-formal simply connected and compact oriented
manifolds of any dimension bigger or equal to 7.Comment: 6 pages, Latex2
Extension of the Thomas-Fermi approximation for trapped Bose-Einstein condensates with an arbitrary number of atoms
By incorporating the zero-point energy contribution we derive simple and
accurate extensions of the usual Thomas-Fermi (TF) expressions for the
ground-state properties of trapped Bose-Einstein condensates that remain valid
for an arbitrary number of atoms in the mean-field regime. Specifically, we
obtain approximate analytical expressions for the ground-state properties of
spherical, cigar-shaped, and disk-shaped condensates that reduce to the correct
analytical formulas in both the TF and the perturbative regimes, and remain
valid and accurate in between these two limiting cases. Mean-field quasi-1D and
-2D condensates appear as simple particular cases of our formulation. The
validity of our results is corroborated by an independent numerical computation
based on the 3D Gross-Pitaevskii equation.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. Final version published in Phys. Rev.
Brauer group of moduli spaces of pairs
We show that the Brauer group of any moduli space of stable pairs with fixed
determinant over a curve is zero.Comment: 12 pages. Final version, accepted in Communications in Algebr
Rationality and Brauer group of a moduli space of framed bundles
We prove that the moduli spaces of framed bundles over a smooth projective
curve are rational. We compute the Brauer group of these moduli spaces to be
zero under some assumption on the stability parameter.Comment: 7 pages, to appear in Tbilisi Math. J; v2. reference adde
Exact Solution of the Munoz-Eaton Model for Protein Folding
A transfer-matrix formalism is introduced to evaluate exactly the partition
function of the Munoz-Eaton model, relating the folding kinetics of proteins of
known structure to their thermodynamics and topology. This technique can be
used for a generic protein, for any choice of the energy and entropy
parameters, and in principle allows the model to be used as a first tool to
characterize the dynamics of a protein of known native state and equilibrium
population. Applications to a -hairpin and to protein CI-2, with
comparisons to previous results, are also shown.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, RevTeX 4. To be published in Phys. Rev. Let
Betti numbers of the moduli space of rank 3 parabolic Higgs bundles
We compute the Betti numbers of the moduli space of rank 3 parabolic Higgs
bundles, using Morse theory. A key point is that certain critical submanifolds
of the Morse function can be identified with moduli spaces of parabolic
triples. These moduli spaces come in families depending on a real parameter and
we study their variation with this parameter.Comment: 78 pages. Extended version. Added a section with the fixed
determinant case. To appear in Memoirs of the AM
