Homotopy Type Theory in Lean

We discuss the homotopy type theory library in the Lean proof assistant. The library is especially geared toward synthetic homotopy theory. Of particular interest is the use of just a few primitive notions of higher inductive types, namely quotients and truncations, and the use of cubical methods.Comment: 17 pages, accepted for ITP 201

Remarks on Charged Vortices in the Maxwell-Chern-Simons Model

We study vortex-like configuration in Maxwell-Chern-Simons Electrodynamics. Attention is paid to the similarity it shares with the Nielsen-Olesen solutions at large distances. A magnetic symmetry between a point-like and an azimuthal-like current in this framework is also pointed out. Furthermore, we address the issue of a neutral and spinless particle interacting with a charged vortex, and obtain that the Aharonov-Casher-type phase depends upon mass and distance parameters.Comment: New refs. added. Four-vortex motion around a circular cylinder

The motion of two pairs of counter-rotating point vortices placed in a uniform flow past a circular cylinder is studied analytically and numerically. When the dynamics is restricted to the symmetric subspace---a case that can be realized experimentally by placing a splitter plate in the center plane---, it is found that there is a family of linearly stable equilibria for same-signed vortex pairs. The nonlinear dynamics in the symmetric subspace is investigated and several types of orbits are presented. The analysis reported here provides new insights and reveals novel features of this four-vortex system, such as the fact that there is no equilibrium for two pairs of vortices of opposite signs on the opposite sides of the cylinder. (It is argued that such equilibria might exist for vortex flows past a cylinder confined in a channel.) In addition, a new family of opposite-signed equilibria on the normal line is reported. The stability analysis for antisymmetric perturbations is also carried out and it shows that all equilibria are unstable in this case.Comment: 27 pages, 13 figures, to be published in Physics of Fluid

On topological spin excitations on a rigid torus

We study Heisenberg model of classical spins lying on the toroidal support, whose internal and external radii are $r$ and $R$, respectively. The isotropic regime is characterized by a fractional soliton solution. Whenever the torus size is very large, $R\to\infty$, its charge equals unity and the soliton effectively lies on an infinite cylinder. However, for R=0 the spherical geometry is recovered and we obtain that configuration and energy of a soliton lying on a sphere. Vortex-like configurations are also supported: in a ring torus ($R>r$) such excitations present no core where energy could blow up. At the limit $R\to\infty$ we are effectively describing it on an infinite cylinder, where the spins appear to be practically parallel to each other, yielding no net energy. On the other hand, in a horn torus ($R=r$) a singular core takes place, while for $R<r$ (spindle torus) two such singularities appear. If $R$ is further diminished until vanish we recover vortex configuration on a sphere.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figure

Coastal bathymetry estimation using an ensemble of synthetic aperture radar images from Sentinel-1

In this study, coastal bathymetry is estimated with a wave ray-tracing algorithm using wave parameters retrieved from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images acquired by the Sentinel-1 satellites. The method relies on the long swell wave’s detection by SAR imagery and the wave’s properties adjustment to the underwater topography, which can be mathematically related using the linear dispersion relation. The ray-tracing algorithm tracks the shoaling waves until the wave breaking zone, using the wavelength and wave direction retrieved from the 2D directional spectra applied at consecutive sub-images. Then, by inverting the linear wave dispersion relationship, the depth is calculated based on the mean wavelength obtained for each sub-image and maintaining the wave period retrieved at the first offshore position, which is computed using a mean depth from an independent bathymetric source. The output of the algorithm is a bathymetric model that results from the interpolation of the depth computed at each tracking position to a uniform grid and the results are compared with bathymetric information from the General Bathymetric Chart of the Ocean. The use of a monthly ensemble of SAR images, instead of individual ones, to reproduce the bathymetry near Aveiro, Portugal, resulted in a smoother topography with lower relative errors, suggesting that the final bathymetric model retrieved from SAR should result from a combination of SAR images. The methodology presented here to infer the bathymetry using space-borne SAR imagery can be useful to retrieve the mean bottom topography (especially in remote areas where the traditional hydrographic surveying methods are not performed regularly) and to reproduce new underwater structures, such as banks, reefs or bars, which are important to detect for the safety of navigation.Peer Reviewe

O sofrimento no doente crónico

Cada vez mais a doença crónica é uma realidade revelando uma importância acrescida em termos de saúde pública pois, devido à sua irreversibilidade, tem repercussões na vida da pessoa: pessoais, socioeconómicas, psicológicas e espirituais, o que implica sem dúvida grande sofrimento. Valores humanistas altruístas devem ser a base dos profissionais que cuidam. Ajudar os profissionais de saúde à reflexão sobre o sofrimento do doente crónico, nomeadamente: ilustrar as fontes e as formas de sofrimento na doença crónica; e esclarecer quais as principais intervenções junto à pessoa em sofrimento. Revisão da literatura, tendo por finalidade identificar o estado da arte sobre a temática. Foi realizada uma pesquisa bibliográfica existente desde 2010, online, baseada em livros, Dissertações de Licenciatura, de Mestrado, de Doutoramento e artigos disponíveis, tendo utilizado as palavras-chave: doença crónica, cuidados continuados e paliativos, sofrimento na doença. Resultados: Seleção de 11 referências bibliográficas que contextualizam diretamente a temática a estudar. Segundo os vários autores, doença crónica “é uma doença de duração prolongada e progressão lenta e descreve quadros crónicos como sendo problemas de saúde que exigem tratamento continuado ao longo de um período de anos ou décadas”. Sofrimento é um “estado de desconforto severo associado a uma ameaça à integridade da sua pessoa como ser biopsicossocial, envolvendo a construção de significados profundamente pessoais, acompanhados de uma forte carga afetiva e que são passíveis de modificar esse sofrimento”. Dor e sofrimento não são a mesma coisa, podendo existir sofrimento sem dor e vice-versa. Gera reações variadas dependendo do significado atribuído à “ameaça” e do contexto em que a pessoa se encontra inserida. As Fontes de Sofrimento encontradas foram: Perda da autonomia e dependência de terceiros; Sintomas mal controlados; Alterações da imagem corporal; Perda de sentido da vida; Perda da dignidade; Perda de papéis sociais e de estatuto; Perda de regalias económicas; Alterações nas relações interpessoais; Modificação de expectativas e planos futuros e Abandono. As Formas de Sofrimento foram: Sofrimento Espiritual; Sofrimento Psicológico (Emocional ou Mental); Sofrimento Relacional (Social ou Familiar); Sofrimento Físico. As Intervenções Junto à Pessoa em Sofrimento devem incidir sobre os seguintes aspetos: Controlo dos sintomas- devendo recorrer-se tanto a medidas farmacológicas como não farmacológicas; Comunicação adequada- Escutar sem julgar e avaliar a linguagem não-verbal bem como as reações emocionais; Apoio à família- Avaliar as suas necessidades, realizando conferências familiares. É importante a sua validação dos cuidados prestados. Importa não esquecer eventuais conflitos passados e não resolvidos, não julgando estas relações; Trabalho em equipa- Intervir na dignidade e no sentido da vida
