Acoustic energy transfer by friction induced vibrations

    Get PDF
Friction-induced vibrations are often investigated for their unwanted effects, such as surface wear and dynamic instabilities. This article focuses on the exploitation of friction-induced vibrations to transfer the energy between different acoustic fields by an interface under frictional contact. One of the main possible applications is the use of the generated acoustic field for passive structural health monitoring (SHM). A mechanical device (secondary acoustic source, SAS), able to perform the energy transfer, is here tested on a simplified benchmark. The energy transfer is obtained between two vibrational fields: a primary field, which is the ambient acoustic field on the structure and is generated by a known source, and a secondary field with a different frequency content produced with the developed device by friction-induced vibrations. The test bench analyzed in this work is composed by a main structure, which is excited by the primary (ambient) acoustic field, and the SAS, able to absorb part of the acoustic energy of the primary field and radiate it within the secondary acoustic field. The device is composed by a main resonator, excited by the primary acoustic field, in frictional contact with a secondary resonator to provide a broadband secondary acoustic field. The objective of the article is to analyze and estimate the power flows from the main structure to the SAS and vice versa, within the two acoustic fields

On the algebraic invariant curves of plane polynomial differential systems

We consider a plane polynomial vector field P(x,y)dx+Q(x,y)dyP(x,y)dx+Q(x,y)dy of degree m>1m>1. To each algebraic invariant curve of such a field we associate a compact Riemann surface with the meromorphic differential ω=dx/P=dy/Q\omega=dx/P=dy/Q. The asymptotic estimate of the degree of an arbitrary algebraic invariant curve is found. In the smooth case this estimate was already found by D. Cerveau and A. Lins Neto [Ann. Inst. Fourier Grenoble 41, 883-903] in a different way.Comment: 10 pages, Latex, to appear in J.Phys.A:Math.Ge

Whole-genome sequencing revealed independent emergence of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium causing sequential outbreaks over 3 years in a tertiary care hospital.

Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VREfm) emerged as an important cause of nosocomial infections worldwide. Previous studies based on molecular typing revealed that VREfm outbreaks are mainly associated with a particular genetic lineage, namely clonal complex 17 (CC17), which harbours either vanA or vanB gene cluster. The University Hospital of Lausanne faced several VREfm episodes of transmissions between 2014 and 2017. In this study, we used whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to investigate the relatedness of 183 VREfm isolates collected from 156 patients. Sequence types (ST) 17, ST80 and ST117 were the most predominant clones. Based on epidemiological data, 10 outbreaks were identified, which were caused by at least 13 distinct genotypes. The majority of isolates involved in outbreaks (91%) differed by only 0 to 3 SNPs. Four outbreaks involved more than one genotype and half of the cases considered as sporadic were possibly linked to an outbreak. By sequencing all isolates, we were able to better understand our local epidemiology of VREfm. The polyclonal structure observed between the different outbreaks strains, the high level of recombination detected in isolates, the time elapsed between admission and the first VREfm detection and the negative screening at admission support the hypothesis of the emergence of new VREfm clones within the hospitalised population

Energy-momentum conservation in pre-metric electrodynamics with magnetic charges

A necessary and sufficient condition for energy-momentum conservation is proved within a topological, pre-metric approach to classical electrodynamics including magnetic as well as electric charges. The extended Lorentz force, consisting of mutual actions by F=(E, B) on the electric current and G=(H, D) on the magnetic current, can be derived from an energy-momentum "potential" if and only if the constitutive relation G=G(F) satisfies a certain vanishing condition. The electric-magnetic reciprocity introduced by Hehl and Obukhov is seen to define a complex structure on the tensor product of 2-form pairs (F,G) which is independent of but consistent with the Hodge star operator defined by any Lorentzian metric. Contrary to a recent claim in the literature, it does not define a complex structure on the space of 2-forms itself.Comment: 8 pages, 1 fugur
