‘Comparing Brazil and USA electricity performance; what was the impact of privatisation?’

Beginning in 1995 a large proportion of the Brazilian electricity distribution sector went through privatisation and restructuring, whereas privately-owned U.S. utilities did not suffer similar ownership change process. This paper is an empirical assessment of the efficiency of the Brazilian distribution sector relative to its U.S. counterpart in 1994 and 2000. Two techniques are applied: Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), including the computation of Malmquist indices of productivity growth, and Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA). For the models that use operating costs as input, we find a positive but not statistically significant impact of Brazilian privatisation on technical efficiency. For the models that use total costs, the impact is significantly negative. Although this should be taken with caution, the negative impact can be the result of an investment surge after privatisation or of an increased rate of substitution of capital for labour in the Brazilian distribution sector. These results suggest that capital costs should not be excluded from the benchmarking. Necessidades de irrigação suplementar em soja nas condições edafoclimáticas do Planalto Médio e Missões, RS.

Este trabalho foi conduzido com a finalidade de estimar as necessidades estocásticas de irrigação suplementar por aspersão na cultura da soja (Glycine max L. Merrill), nas regiões agroecológicas do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, denominadas de Planalto Médio e Missões. As necessidades foram simuladas em relação à combinação entre locais, épocas de semeadura, níveis de manejo da irrigação e entre níveis de ocorrência . As necessidades de irrigação suplementar foram máximas na semeadura de 15 de outubro, e os menores valores foram encontrados na semeadura de 15 de dezembro; as necessidades de irrigação suplementar foram maiores nas condições agroecológicas das Missões quando comparadas com as do Planalto Médio; as lâminas de irrigação suplementar estimadas aumentaram à medida que o nível de risco diminuiu

Terapêutica intravesical com bacilo de Calmette-Guérin no tratamento do carcinoma da bexiga / o que sabemos até agora

AbstractIntroductionThe use of intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin is a valid option in the treatment of non-muscle invasive bladder tumors, making it the main subject of a lot of publications. The aim of the present study is to review and consolidate the data available about this subject.MethodsA review of the data available was made on PubMed with the keywords: “intravesical BCG” and “non-muscle invasive bladder cancer”. Original and review articles written in English or Portuguese were selected. We present the discussion alongside the results for structural purposes.Results and discussionScientific evidence strongly advises in favor of BCG use on intermediate and high risk tumors, due to its impact on the recurrence and possibly on the progression rates. It is important to be watchful for possible local and systemic side effects, that when detected call for a rightful therapeutically decision alongside the recommended schemes.ConclusionThe use of intravesical BCG with therapeutically purposes has strong evidence on the non-muscle invasive bladder tumors. More studies are needed in order to better understand the best administration scheme and its mechanism of action

Entropy-Corrected New Agegraphic Dark Energy Model in Horava-Lifshitz Gravity

In this work, we have considered the entropy-corrected new agegraphic dark energy (ECNADE) model in Horava-Lifshitz gravity in FRW universe. We have discussed the correspondence between ECNADE and other dark energy models such as DBI-essence,Yang-Mills dark energy, Chameleon field, Non-linear electrodynamics field and hessence dark energy in the context of Horava-Lifshitz gravity and reconstructed the potentials and the dynamics of the scalar field theory which describe the ECNADE.Comment: 12 page
