Axion Search by Laser-based Experiment OSQAR

    Get PDF
International audienceLaser-based experimentOSQAR in CERN is aimed to the search of the axions by twomethods. The photon regeneration experiment is using two LHC dipole magnets of the length 14.3 m and magnetic field 9.5 T equipped with an optical barrier at the end of the first magnet. It looks as light shining through the wall. No excess of events above the background was detected at this arrangement. Nevertheless, this result extends the exclusion region for the axion mass. The second method wants to measure the ultra-fine Vacuum Magnetic Birefringence for the first time. An optical scheme with electro-optical modulator has been proposed, validated and subsequently improved. Cotton-Mouton constant for air was determined in this experiment setup

Use of monoclonal antibody probes against rat hepatic cytochromes P-450c and P-450d to detect immunochemically related isozymes in liver microsomes from different species

Nine distinct monoclonal antibodies raised against purified rat liver cytochrome P-450c react with six different epitopes on the antigen, and one of these epitopes is shared by cytochrome P-450d. None of these monoclonal antibodies recognize seven other purified rat liver isozymes (cytochromes P-450a, b, and e-i) or other proteins in the cytochrome P-450 region of "Western blots" of liver microsomes. Each of the monoclonal antibodies was used to probe "Western blots" of liver microsomes from untreated, or 3-methylcholanthrene-, or isosafrole-treated animals to determine if laboratory animals other than rats possess isozymes immunochemically related to cytochromes P-450 and P-450d. Two protein-staining bands immunorelated to cytochromes P-450c and P-450d were observed in all animals treated with 3-methylcholanthrene (rabbit, hamster, guinea pig, and C57BL/6J mouse) except the DBA/2J mouse, where no polypeptide immunorelated to cytochrome P-450c was detected. The conservation of the number of rat cytochrome P-450c epitopes among these species varied from as few as two (guinea pig) to as many as five epitopes (C57BL/6J mouse and rabbit). The relative mobility in sodium dodecyl sulfate-gels of polypeptides immunorelated to cytochromes P-450c and P-450d was similar in all species examined except the guinea pig, where the polypeptide related to cytochrome P-450c had a smaller Mr than cytochrome P-450d. With the use of both monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies, we were able to establish that purified rabbit cytochromes P-450 LM4 and P-450 LM6 are immunorelated to rat cytochromes P-450d and P-450c, respectively.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/24640/1/0000051.pd

International audienceOSQAR experiment at CERN is based on two laser methods for search of axions and scalar particles. The light shining through the wall experiment has been using two LHC dipole magnets with an optical barrier, argon laser, and cooled 2D CCD detector for the measuring of expected regenerated photons. The second method wants to measure the Vacuum Magnetic Birefringence. An optical set-up with electro-optical modulator has been proposed, validated and subsequently improved in collaborating institutes. Cotton-Muton effect in nitrogen was measured by this method. Prototype of a one-meter long laser cavity was developed for this experiment

The unidentified hormonal defense against weight gain

    No full text
Human biology has evolved to keep body fat within a range that supports survival. During the last 25 years, obesity biologists have uncovered key aspects of physiology that prevent fat mass from becoming too low. In contrast, the mechanisms that counteract excessive adipose expansion are largely unknown. Evidence dating back to the 1950s suggests the existence of a blood-borne molecule that defends against weight gain. In this article, we discuss the research supporting an "unidentified factor of overfeeding" and models that explain its role in body weight control. If it exists, revealing the identity of this factor could end a long-lasting enigma of energy balance regulation and facilitate a much-needed breakthrough in the pharmacological treatment of obesity
