    Coalition Formation and Combinatorial Auctions; Applications to Self-organization and Self-management in Utility Computing

    In this paper we propose a two-stage protocol for resource management in a hierarchically organized cloud. The first stage exploits spatial locality for the formation of coalitions of supply agents; the second stage, a combinatorial auction, is based on a modified proxy-based clock algorithm and has two phases, a clock phase and a proxy phase. The clock phase supports price discovery; in the second phase a proxy conducts multiple rounds of a combinatorial auction for the package of services requested by each client. The protocol strikes a balance between low-cost services for cloud clients and a decent profit for the service providers. We also report the results of an empirical investigation of the combinatorial auction stage of the protocol.Comment: 14 page

    Exactly Conservative Integrators

    Traditional numerical discretizations of conservative systems generically yield an artificial secular drift of any nonlinear invariants. In this work we present an explicit nontraditional algorithm that exactly conserves these invariants. We illustrate the general method by applying it to the three-wave truncation of the Euler equations, the Lotka--Volterra predator--prey model, and the Kepler problem. This method is discussed in the context of symplectic (phase space conserving) integration methods as well as nonsymplectic conservative methods.     Bid-Centric Cloud Service Provisioning

    Bid-centric service descriptions have the potential to offer a new cloud service provisioning model that promotes portability, diversity of choice and differentiation between providers. A bid matching model based on requirements and capabilities is presented that provides the basis for such an approach. In order to facilitate the bidding process, tenders should be specified as abstractly as possible so that the solution space is not needlessly restricted. To this end, we describe how partial TOSCA service descriptions allow for a range of diverse solutions to be proposed by multiple providers in response to tenders. Rather than adopting a lowest common denominator approach, true portability should allow for the relative strengths and differentiating features of cloud service providers to be applied to bids. With this in mind, we describe how TOSCA service descriptions could be augmented with additional information in order to facilitate heterogeneity in proposed solutions, such as the use of coprocessors and provider-specific services

    Macroalgae and Eelgrass Mapping in Great Bay Estuary Using AISA Hyperspectral Imagery.

    Results Increases in nitrogen concentration and declining eelgrass beds in Great Bay Estuary have been observed in the last decades. These two parameters are clear indicators of the impending eutrophication for New Hampshire’s estuaries. The NH Department of Environmental Services (DES) in collaboration with the Piscataqua Region Estuaries Partnership adopted the assumption that eelgrass survival can be used as the target for establishing numeric water quality criteria for nutrients in NH’s estuaries. One of the hypotheses put forward regarding eelgrass decline is that an eutrophication response to nutrient increases in the Great Bay Estuary has been the proliferation of nuisance macroalgae, which has reduced eelgrass area in Great Bay Estuary. To determine the extent of this effect, mapping of eelgrass and nuisance macroalgae beds using hyperspectral imagery was suggested. A hyperspectral image was made by SpecTIR in August 2007 using an AISA Eagle sensor. The collected dataset was then used to map eelgrass and nuisance macroalgae throughout the Great Bay Estuary. Here we outline the procedure for mapping the macroalgae and eelgrass beds. Hyperspectral imagery was effective where known spectral signatures could be easily identified. Comprehensive eelgrass and macroalgae maps of the estuary could only be produced by combining hyperspectral imagery with ground-truth information and expert opinion. Macroalgae was predominantly located in areas where eelgrass formerly existed. Macroalgae mats have now replaced nearly 9% of the area formerly occupied by eelgrass in Great Bay

    Phosphorus requirements of some selected soil types in the Fiji sugarcane belt

    The availability of phosphorus (P) in soil is perceived to be one of the limiting factors to sustainable sugarcane production in Fiji. The main objective of this research was to ascertain the amount of bioavailable phosphorus in some Fiji sugarcane growing area soils; this will be valuable in improving the determination of the required amount of inorganic fertilizer to be applied to the soil. In this study, twelve different soils were selected from the sugarcane belt of Fiji and phosphorus buffer index (PBI) and phosphorus isotherm experiments were performed. Soil physical and chemical parameters were also measured and Pearson\u27s correlation tests used to identify patterns. It was found that Oxisols had the highest PBI values ranging from 134 to 170 while Inceptisols had the lowest ranging from 33 to 54. The PBI data followed a similar pattern to the generated isotherm curves of the different soil types. Most interest was in identifying soils with low PBIs as they have greater potential for P leaching through runoff into waterways. Clay content showed a strong positive correlation with PBI (R = 0.76, p ≤ 0.005). There is strong association with phosphorus fixation in soil with increasing levels of Al and Fe in the soil.
