Landâatmosphere interactions exacerbated the drought and heatwave over northern Europe during summer 2018
The 2018 drought and heatwave over northern Europe were exceptional, with unprecedented forest fires in Sweden, searing heat in Germany and water restrictions in England. Monthly, daily, and hourly data from ERA5, verified with in situ soil water content and surface flux measurements, are examined to investigate the subseasonalâtoâseasonal progression of the event and the diurnal evolution of tropospheric profiles over Britain to quantify the anomalous land surface contribution to heat and drought. Data suggest the region entered an unprecedented condition of becoming a âhot spotâ for landâatmosphere coupling, which exacerbated the heatwave across much of northern Europe. Landâatmosphere feedbacks were prompted by unusually low soil water over wide areas, which generated moisture limitations on surface latent heat fluxes, suppressing cloud formation, increasing surface net radiation, and driving temperatures higher during several multiweek episodes of extreme heat. We find consistent evidence in field data and reanalysis of a threshold of soil water content at most locations, below which surface fluxes and daily maximum temperatures become hypersensitive to declining soil water. Similar recent heatwaves over various parts of Europe in 2003, 2010, and 2019, combined with dire climate change projections, suggest such events could be on the increase. Landâatmosphere feedbacks may play an increasingly important role in exacerbating extremes, but could also contribute to their predictability on subseasonal time scales
Geometric invariant theory of syzygies, with applications to moduli spaces
We define syzygy points of projective schemes, and introduce a program of
studying their GIT stability. Then we describe two cases where we have managed
to make some progress in this program, that of polarized K3 surfaces of odd
genus, and of genus six canonical curves. Applications of our results include
effectivity statements for divisor classes on the moduli space of odd genus K3
surfaces, and a new construction in the Hassett-Keel program for the moduli

Penrose Limits of Orbifolds and Orientifolds
We study the Penrose limit of various AdS_p X S^q orbifolds. The limiting
spaces are waves with parallel rays and singular wave fronts. In particular, we
consider the orbifolds AdS_3 X S^3/\Gamma, AdS_5 X S^5/\Gamma and AdS_{4,7} X
S^{7,4}/\Gamma where \Gamma acts on the sphere and/or the AdS factor. In the
pp-wave limit, the wave fronts are the orbifolds C^2/\Gamma, C^4/\Gamma and R
XC^4/\Gamma, respectively. When desingularization is possible, we get
asymptotically locally pp-wave backgrounds (ALpp). The Penrose limit of
orientifolds are also discussed. In the AdS_5 X RP^5 case, the limiting
singularity can be resolved by an Eguchi-Hanson gravitational instanton. The
pp-wave limit of D3-branes near singularities in F-theory is also presented.

The Stark effect in linear potentials
We examine the Stark effect (the second-order shift in the energy spectrum
due to an external constant force) for two 1-dimensional model quantum
mechanical systems described by linear potentials, the so-called quantum
bouncer (defined by V(z) = Fz for z>0 and V(z) infinite for z<0) and the
symmetric linear potential (given by V(z) = F|z|). We show how straightforward
use of the most obvious properties of the Airy function solutions and simple
Taylor expansions give closed form results for the Stark shifts in both
systems. These exact results are then compared to other approximation
techniques, such as perturbation theory and WKB methods. These expressions add
to the small number of closed-form descriptions available for the Stark effect

Semiflexible chains in confined spaces
We develop an analytical method for studying the properties of a noninteracting wormlike chain (WLC) in confined geometries. The mean-field-like theory replaces the rigid constraints of confinement with average constraints, thus allowing us to develop a tractable method for treating a WLC wrapped on the surface of a sphere, and fully encapsulated within it. The efficacy of the theory is established by reproducing the exact correlation functions for a WLC confined to the surface of a sphere. In addition, the coefficients in the free energy are exactly calculated. We also describe the behavior of a surface-confined chain under external tension that is relevant for single molecule experiments on histone-DNA complexes. The force-extension curves display spatial oscillations, and the extension of the chain, whose maximum value is bounded by the sphere diameter, scales as fâ1 at large forces, in contrast to the unconfined chain that approaches the contour length as fâ1â2. A WLC encapsulated in a sphere, that is relevant for the study of the viral encapsulation of DNA, can also be treated using the mean-field approach. The predictions of the theory for various correlation functions are in excellent agreement with Langevin simulations. We find that strongly confined chains are highly structured by examining the correlations using a local winding axis. The predicted pressure of the system is in excellent agreement with simulations but, as is known, is significantly lower than the pressures seen for DNA packaged in viral capsids
Search for Heavy Leptons at Hadron Colliders
Four models are considered which contain heavy leptons beyond the three
families of the standard model. Two are fourth-generation extensions of the
standard model in which the right-handed heavy leptons are either isosinglets
or in an isodoublet; the other two are motivated by the aspon model of CP
violation. In all these models, the heavy neutrino can either be heavier than,
or comparable in mass to, the charged lepton leading to the possibility that
the charged lepton is very long-lived. Production cross section and signatures

Mathematical and computer modeling of electro-optic systems using a generic modeling approach
The conventional approach to modelling electro-optic sensor systems is to develop separate models for individual systems or classes of system, depending on the detector technology employed in the sensor and the application. However, this ignores commonality in design and in components of these systems. A generic approach is presented for modelling a variety of sensor systems operating in the infrared waveband that also allows systems to be modelled with different levels of detail and at different stages of the product lifecycle. The provision of different model types (parametric and image-flow descriptions) within the generic framework can allow valuable insights to be gained
On the geometry of C^3/D_27 and del Pezzo surfaces
We clarify some aspects of the geometry of a resolution of the orbifold X =
C3/D_27, the noncompact complex manifold underlying the brane quiver standard
model recently proposed by Verlinde and Wijnholt. We explicitly realize a map
between X and the total space of the canonical bundle over a degree 1 quasi del
Pezzo surface, thus defining a desingularization of X. Our analysis relys
essentially on the relationship existing between the normalizer group of D_27
and the Hessian group and on the study of the behaviour of the Hesse pencil of
