The wisdom of collective grading and the effects of epistemic and semantic diversity

    Get PDF
A computer simulation is used to study collective judgements that an expert panel reaches on the basis of qualitative probability judgements contributed by individual members. The simulated panel displays a strong and robust crowd wisdom effect. The panel's performance is better when members contribute precise probability estimates instead of qualitative judgements, but not by much. Surprisingly, it doesn't always hurt for panel members to interpret the probability expressions differently. Indeed, coordinating their understandings can be much worse

Phonon-Induced Dephasing in Quantum Dot-Cavity QED

We present a semi-analytic and asymptotically exact solution to the problem of phonon-induced decoherence in a quantum dot-microcavity system. Particular emphasis is placed on the linear polarization and optical absorption, but the approach presented herein may be straightforwardly adapted to address any elements of the exciton-cavity density matrix. At its core, the approach combines Trotter's decomposition theorem with the linked cluster expansion. The effects of the exciton-cavity and exciton-phonon couplings are taken into account on equal footing, thereby providing access to regimes of comparable polaron and polariton timescales. We show that the optical decoherence is realized by real phonon-assisted transitions between different polariton states of the quantum dot-cavity system, and that the polariton line broadening is well-described by Fermi's golden rule in the polariton frame. We also provide purely analytic approximations which accurately describe the system dynamics in the limit of longer polariton timescales

    Grading in Groups

Juries, committees and experts panels commonly appraise things of one kind or another on the basis of grades awarded by several people. When everybody's grading thresholds are known to be the same, the results sometimes can be counted on to reflect the graders’ opinion. Otherwise, they often cannot. Under certain conditions, Arrow's ‘impossibility’ theorem entails that judgements reached by aggregating grades do not reliably track any collective sense of better and worse at all. These claims are made by adapting the Arrow–Sen framework for social choice to study grading in groups

The Effects of a Programed Text of Contingency Management Procedures on the Ability of Teachers to Write Behavioral Prescriptions

An informational source where teachers and teacher-candidates could gain a functional knowledge of contingency management techniques had not been developed. A programed text was written to provide this source. Five teachers and teacher-candidates were exposed to the text for a period of three days. As a result of this exposure, learning gains, significant at the 0.01 level, were found in the students\u27 abilities (a) to write behavioral prescriptions and (b) to write the principles of contingency management when presented with open-ended questions pertaining to these principles

Leadership Roles: Creating Inclusiveness Within A Worship Environment

This Capstone Project sought to investigate and measure the process of social change in the community setting of a Christian church. A committee of stakeholders came together with a common passion to engage and integrate individuals of varying disabilities at all levels of church participation. As a new committee, stakeholders agreed to use the cyclical process of Participatory Action Research (PAR) to guide them in creating an action plan for promoting this congregational change. The occupational therapist served on the committee as both a co-facilitator and researcher. While the primary purpose of the project was to objectively measure the degree of progress made towards creating a more inclusive environment, a secondary purpose was to gain a better understanding of how to promote participation and engagement for disabled individuals within a faith-based community. The lessons learned from engaging in PAR may also provide the field of occupational therapy more information about conducting this type of research in faith based community settings
