The bright-end galaxy candidates at z ~ 9 from 79 independent HST fields
We present a full data analysis of the pure-parallel Hubble Space Telescope
(HST) imaging observations in the Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies Survey
(BoRG[z9]) in Cycle 22. The medium-deep exposures with five HST/WFC3IR+UVIS
filter bands from 79 independent sightlines (~370 arcmin^2) provide the least
biased determination of number density for z>9 bright galaxies against cosmic
variance. After a strict two-step selection for candidate galaxies, including
dropout color and photometric redshift analyses, and revision of previous BoRG
candidates, we identify one source at z~10 and two sources at z~9. The z~10
candidate shows evidence of line-of-sight lens magnification (mu~1.5), yet it
appears surprisingly luminous (MUV ~ -22.6\pm0.3 mag), making it one of the
brightest candidates at z > 8 known (~ 0.3 mag brighter than the z = 8.68
galaxy EGSY8p7, spectroscopically confirmed by Zitrin and collaborators). For z
~ 9 candidates, we include previous data points at fainter magnitudes and find
that the data are well fitted by a Schechter luminosity function with alpha ~
-2.1, MUV ~ -21.5 mag, and log phi ~ -4.5 Mpc^-3mag^-1, for the first time
without fixing any parameters. The inferred cosmic star formation rate density
is consistent with unaccelerated evolution from lower redshift.Comment: 18pages, 7figures, 6tables. accepted to the Astrophysical Journa
Quark spin coupling in baryons - revisited
A direct connection can be made between mixing angles in negative parity
baryons and the spin coupling of constituent quarks. The mixing angles do not
depend on spectral data. These angles are recalculated for gluon exchange and
pion exchange between quarks. For pion exchange the results of Glozman and
Riska are corrected. The experimental data on mixing are very similar to those
derived from gluon exchange but substantially different from the values
obtained for pion exchange.Comment: 10 pages, RevTex; a sign error is corrected, spin-orbit results are

Thermodynamics of low dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg ferromagnets in an external magnetic field within Green function formalism
The thermodynamics of low dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg ferromagnets (HFM)
in an external magnetic field is investigated within a second-order two-time
Green function formalism in the wide temperature and field range. A crucial
point of the proposed scheme is a proper account of the analytical properties
for the approximate transverse commutator Green function obtained as a result
of the decoupling procedure. A good quantitative description of the correlation
functions, magnetization, susceptibility, and heat capacity of the HFM on a
chain, square and triangular lattices is found for both infinite and
finite-sized systems. The dependences of the thermodynamic functions of 2D HFM
on the cluster size are studied. The obtained results agree well with the
corresponding data found by Bethe ansatz, exact diagonalization, high
temperature series expansions, and quantum Monte Carlo simulations.Comment: 11 pages, 14 figure
Genomic-based epidemiology reveals independent origins and gene flow of glyphosate resistance in Bassia scoparia populations across North America
Genomic-based epidemiology can provide insight into the origins and spread of herbicide resistance mechanisms in weeds. We used kochia (Bassia scoparia) populations resistant to the herbicide glyphosate from across western North America to test the alternative hypotheses that (i) a single EPSPS gene duplication event occurred initially in the Central Great Plains and then subsequently spread to all other geographical areas now exhibiting glyphosate-resistant kochia populations or that (ii) gene duplication occurred multiple times in independent events in a case of parallel evolution. We used qPCR markers previously developed for measuring the structure of the EPSPS tandem duplication to investigate whether all glyphosate-resistant individuals had the same EPSPS repeat structure. We also investigated population structure using simple sequence repeat markers to determine the relatedness of kochia populations from across the Central Great Plains, Northern Plains and the Pacific Northwest. We found that the original EPSPS duplication genotype was predominant in the Central Great Plains where glyphosate resistance was first reported. We identified two additional EPSPS duplication genotypes, one having geographical associations with the Northern Plains and the other with the Pacific Northwest. The EPSPS duplication genotype from the Pacific Northwest seems likely to represent a second, independent evolutionary origin of a resistance allele. We found evidence of gene flow across populations and a general lack of population structure. The results support at least two independent evolutionary origins of glyphosate resistance in kochia, followed by substantial and mostly geographically localized gene flow to spread the resistance alleles into diverse genetic backgrounds
Quantum melting of incommensurate domain walls in two dimensions
Quantum fluctuations of periodic domain-wall arrays in two-dimensional
incommensurate states at zero temperature are investigated using the elastic
theory in the vicinity of the commensurate-incommensurate transition point.
Both stripe and honeycomb structures of domain walls with short-range
interactions are considered. It is revealed that the stripes melt and become a
stripe liquid in a large-wall-spacing (low-density) region due to dislocations
created by quantum fluctuations. This quantum melting transition is of second
order and characterized by the three-dimensional XY universality class.
Zero-point energies of the stripe and honeycomb structures are calculated. As a
consequence of these results, phase diagrams of the domain-wall solid and
liquid phases in adsorbed atoms on graphite are discussed for various
domain-wall masses. Quantum melting of stripes in the presence of long-range
interactions that fall off as power laws is also studied. These results are
applied to incommensurate domain walls in two-dimensional adsorbed atoms on
substrates and in doped antiferromagnets, e.g. cuprates and nickelates.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
The Super Eight Galaxies: Properties of a Sample of Very Bright Galaxies at 7 \u3c z \u3c 8
We present the Super Eight galaxies - a set of very luminous, high-redshift (7.1 \u3c z \u3c 8.0) galaxy candidates found in the Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies (BoRG) Survey fields. The original sample includes eight galaxies that are Y-band dropout objects with H-band magnitudes of m H \u3c 25.5. Four of these objects were originally reported in Calvi et al. Combining new Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFC3/F814W imaging and Spitzer IRAC data with archival imaging from BoRG and other surveys, we explore the properties of these galaxies. Photometric redshift fitting places six of these galaxies in the redshift range of 7.1 \u3c z \u3c 8.0, resulting in three new high-redshift galaxies and confirming three of the four high-redshift galaxy candidates from Calvi et al. We calculate the half-light radii of the Super Eight galaxies using the HST F160W filter and find that the Super Eight sizes are in line with the typical evolution of size with redshift. The Super Eights have a mean mass of log (M â/M o) âŒ10, which is typical for sources in this luminosity range. Finally, we place our sample on the UV z ⌠8 luminosity function and find that the Super Eight number density is consistent with other surveys in this magnitude and redshift range
Electron attachment to valence-excited CO
The possibility of electron attachment to the valence state of CO
is examined using an {\it ab initio} bound-state multireference configuration
interaction approach. The resulting resonance has symmetry;
the higher vibrational levels of this resonance state coincide with, or are
nearly coincident with, levels of the parent state. Collisional
relaxation to the lowest vibrational levels in hot plasma situations might
yield the possibility of a long-lived CO state.Comment: Revtex file + postscript file for one figur
Field-Induced Two-Step Phase Transitions in the Singlet Ground State Triangular Antiferromagnet CsFeBr
The ground state of the stacked triangular antiferromagnet CsFeBr is a
spin singlet due to the large single ion anisotropy . The
field-induced magnetic ordering in this compound was investigated by the
magnetic susceptibility, the magnetization process and specific heat
measurements for an external field parallel to the -axis. Unexpectedly, two
phase transitions were observed in the magnetic field higher than 3 T. The
phase diagram for temperature versus magnetic field was obtained. The mechanism
leading to the successive phase transitions is discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, 10 eps files, jpsj styl
