    Retargeting Ads for Shopping Cart Recovery: Online Field Experiments

    Retargeting ads (RA) aim to convert customers who previously browsed the websites or abandoned shopping-carts. We exploit several randomized field experiments to test how the effects of RA vary depending on ad-copy content and purchase-funnel stages. Results suggest that compared to hold-out without retargeting, RA in lower funnel based on shopping-cart abandonment history significantly enhances purchase responses. The effects are driven by ad content that highlights product return information rather than product reminder or shipping information. Due to lack of touch/feel/trial of online orders, such ad-copy can nudge customers to try the products by reducing shopping risks and, thus, increase purchase rates. Net revenue for RAs with product return information is 49.7% larger than conventional RAs with product information. Also, lower funnel retargeting is 2.25 times as effective as upper funnel retargeting in lifting purchase rates. These findings indicate how to design RAs to recover abandoned carts and boost sales

    A Probabilistic Choice Model of Multiple Items Selection

    Conventional choice model of consumer behavior posits that buyers choose a single item or one brand at a time. However, there are many occasions that consumers pick up several items or a couple of brands at the same time to satisfy their own needs and/or to maximize their family\u27s utility. We can observe this kind of phenomena in the market of packaged consumer products such as tobacco, candy bar, beer, and soft drink. We construct a new probabilistic choice model of consumer behavior. In order to deal with such a situation that a consumer makes a simultaneous selection of multiple items from his consideration set of brands, we assume a two stage model of consumer choice behavior. At first stage, we suppose, a consumer makes a decision whether he buys a single brand or a mixed bundle of brands. Then he makes a decision of which brand (s) to be picked up and assigns the allocation number of multiple brands. We use a set of point-of-sale beer data scanned at a convenience store to estimate the model parameters. Our model is well fitted into the empirical data. Marketing implications and the possibilities of further extensions with our basic idea are provided

    Accelerating revised RBF neural network

    This study aimed to accelerate the segmentation of organs in medical imaging with the revised radial basis function (RBF) network, using a graphics processing unit (GPU). We segmented the lung and liver regions from 250 chest x-ray computed tomography (CT) images and 160 abdominal CT images, respectively, using the revised RBF network. We compared the time taken to segment images and their accuracy between serial processing by a single-core central processing unit (CPU), parallel processing using four CPU cores, and GPU processing. Segmentation times for lung and liver organ regions shortened to 57.80 and 35.35 seconds for CPU parallel processing and 20.16 and 11.02 seconds for GPU processing, compared to 211.03 and 124.21 seconds for CPU serial processing, respectively. The concordance rate of the segmented region to the normal region in slices excluding the upper and lower ends (173 lung and 111 liver slices) was 98% for lung and 96% for liver. The use of CPU parallel processing and GPU shortened the organ segmentation time in the revised RBF network without compromising segmentation accuracy. In particular, segmentation time was shortened to less than 10% with GPU. This processing method will contribute to workload reduction in imaging analysis

    Phases of one dimensional large N gauge theory in a 1/D expansion

    We consider large N Yang Mills theory with D adjoint scalar fields in d dimensions for d=0 or 1. We show the existence of a non-trivial saddle point of the functional integral at large D which is characterized by a mass gap for the adjoint scalars. We integrate out the adjoint scalars in a 1/D expansion around the saddle point. In case of one dimension which is regarded as a circle, this procedure leads to an effective action for the Wilson line. We find an analogue of the confinement/deconfinement transition which consists of a second order phase transition from a uniform to a non-uniform eigenvalue distribution of the Wilson line, closely followed by a Gross-Witten-Wadia transition where a gap develops in the eigenvalue distribution. The phase transition can be regarded as a continuation of a Gregory-Laflamme transition. Our methods involve large values of the dimensionless 'tHooft coupling.     Autoantibodies to IL-1α in sera from rapidly progressive idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis

    To clarify the clinical significance of autoantibodies to interleukin-1α (IL-1α autoantibodies) in rapidly progressive idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis ( IPF ), we measured the level of IL-1α autoantibodies in serum of 11 patients on the first hospital day, when patients were admitted due to severe symptoms, and on the 21st hospital day. IL-1α autoantibodies in serum were measured using radioimmunoassay, and the limitation of this assay for IL-1α autoantibodies was 5 ng/ml. These antibodies were detected in 5 of 11 patients on the first hospital day. On the 21st hospital day, these antibodies were detected in all patients, and its level was increased compared with that on the first hospital day. IL-1α autoantibodies that appeared in patients corresponded to that of IgG. The half life of exogeneous autoantibodies was investigated following administration of autoantibody rich plasma obtained from healthy blood donors to 6 control patients (CP) and 6 progressive IPF patients. These autoantibody levels in their serum were less than 5 ng/ml before administration. Serum was obtained at the indicated time after administration of IL-1α autoantibodies and the level of these autoantibodies in serum was measured, then the half life was calculated. Half life of exogeneous IL-1α autoantibodies in progressive IPF patients was significantly shorter than that in CP (71.3±31.8 hr vs 352.0±98.3 hr, p<0.01).These findings suggested that IL-1α autoantibodies were generated in response to the inflammatory process of rapidly progressive IPF and may act as a regulatory factor for IL-1α

    A search for new isotopes using in-flight fission of a 345 MeV/nucleon 238U beam has been carried out at the RI Beam Factory at the RIKEN Nishina Center. Fission fragments were analyzed and identified by using the superconducting in-flight separator BigRIPS. We observed 45 new neutron-rich isotopes: 71Mn, 73,74Fe, 76Co, 79Ni, 81,82Cu, 84,85Zn, 87Ga, 90Ge, 95Se, 98Br, 101Kr, 103Rb, 106,107Sr, 108,109Y, 111,112Zr, 114,115Nb, 115,116,117Mo, 119,120Tc, 121,122,123,124Ru, 123,124,125,126Rh, 127,128Pd, 133Cd, 138Sn, 140Sb, 143Te, 145I, 148Xe, and 152Ba

    Bortezomib-cyclophosphamide-dexamethasone induction/consolidation and bortezomib maintenance for transplant-eligible newly diagnosed multiple myeloma: phase 2 multicenter trial

    [Objectives:] We conducted a phase II trial to prospectively evaluate the efficacy and safety of bortezomib-cyclophosphamide-dexamethasone (VCD) induction, autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT), VCD consolidation, and bortezomib maintenance in transplant-eligible newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (NDMM) patients in Japan (UMIN000010542). [Methods:] From 2013 to 2016, 42 patients with a median age of 58 (range 42–65) years with NDMM were enrolled in 15 centers. The primary endpoint was the complete response (CR) /stringent CR (sCR) rate after transplantation, and overall/progression-free survival rates were also evaluated. [Results:] Following induction therapy, the overall response rate was obtained in 71% of patients, including a CR/sCR of 10% and a very good partial response (VGPR) of 26%. Twenty-six of the 42 patients completed ASCT following the protocol and CR/sCR and VGPR rate 100 days after ASCT was 26% and 17%, respectively. During consolidation therapy, 3 of the 24 patients achieved deeper responses. Eight of the 18 patients completed 2-year bortezomib maintenance without disease progression and grade 3/4 toxicities. Five patients were VGPR or partial response after ASCT but maintained response with 2-year bortezomib maintenance. Two-year overall and progression-free survival rates were 92.5% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 78.5%−97.5%) and 62.6% (95% CI: 45.8%−75.5%), respectively. Grade 3/4 toxicities (≥ 10%) included neutropenia (19%) and anemia (17%) in induction, and thrombocytopenia (29%) in consolidation. [Conclusion:] VCD induction/consolidation and bortezomib maintenance with ASCT for NDMM resulted in a high CR/sCR rate and provided good overall/progression-free survival in Japan

    Essential Role of Neuron-Enriched Diacylglycerol Kinase (DGK), DGKβ in Neurite Spine Formation, Contributing to Cognitive Function

    BACKGROUND: Diacylglycerol (DG) kinase (DGK) phosphorylates DG to produce phosphatidic acid (PA). Of the 10 subtypes of mammalian DGKs, DGKbeta is a membrane-localized subtype and abundantly expressed in the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, and caudate-putamen. However, its physiological roles in neurons and higher brain function have not been elucidated. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We, therefore, developed DGKbeta KO mice using the Sleeping Beauty transposon system, and found that its long-term potentiation in the hippocampal CA1 region was reduced, causing impairment of cognitive functions including spatial and long-term memories in Y-maze and Morris water-maze tests. The primary cultured hippocampal neurons from KO mice had less branches and spines compared to the wild type. This morphological impairment was rescued by overexpression of DGKbeta. In addition, overexpression of DGKbeta in SH-SY5Y cells or primary cultured mouse hippocampal neurons resulted in branch- and spine-formation, while a splice variant form of DGKbeta, which has kinase activity but loses membrane localization, did not induce branches and spines. In the cells overexpressing DGKbeta but not the splice variant form, DGK product, PA, was increased and the substrate, DG, was decreased on the plasma membrane. Importantly, lower spine density and abnormality of PA and DG contents in the CA1 region of the KO mice were confirmed. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: These results demonstrate that membrane-localized DGKbeta regulates spine formation by regulation of lipids, contributing to the maintenance of neural networks in synaptic transmission of cognitive processes including memory

    Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a syndrome which has a broad range of etiologic factors depending on different clinical settings. Because AKI has significant impacts on prognosis in any clinical settings, early detection and intervention are necessary to improve the outcomes of AKI patients. This clinical guideline for AKI was developed by a multidisciplinary approach with nephrology, intensive care medicine, blood purification, and pediatrics. Of note, clinical practice for AKI management which was widely performed in Japan was also evaluated with comprehensive literature search
