A Case History of Liquefaction Flow Failures in Mountains Mine Waste Dumps
Over the past 25 years there have been a large number of flowslides in Rocky Mountain coal mine waste dumps located in British Columbia, Canada. The flowslides occurred rapidly and displayed surprisingly long distance of runout up to 2 km. Detailed field, laboratory studies, and analyses indicate that static collapse of saturated or nearly saturated sandy gravel layers within the dumps are responsible for the initial failure and ensuing flow failures. In addition to field and laboratory studies, finite element analyses were carried out on three case histories. The analysis results indicated that the flow like liquefaction failures of these waste dumps can be triggered by gradually raising of perched water tables contained within thin layers or poorly draining waste material in these slopes. This paper reviews the site condition and failure pattern observed in the mountainous mine waste dumps and investigates the mechanism of static liquefaction failure by finite element methods
Nishimori point in the 2D +/- J random-bond Ising model
We study the universality class of the Nishimori point in the 2D +/- J
random-bond Ising model by means of the numerical transfer-matrix method. Using
the domain-wall free-energy, we locate the position of the fixed point along
the Nishimori line at the critical concentration value p_c = 0.1094 +/- 0.0002
and estimate nu = 1.33 +/- 0.03. Then, we obtain the exponents for the moments
of the spin-spin correlation functions as well as the value for the central
charge c = 0.464 +/- 0.004. The main qualitative result is the fact that
percolation is now excluded as a candidate for describing the universality

Nothing moves a surface: vacancy mediated surface diffusion
We report scanning tunneling microscopy observations, which imply that all
atoms in a close-packed copper surface move frequently, even at room
temperature. Using a low density of embedded indium `tracer' atoms, we
visualize the diffusive motion of surface atoms. Surprisingly, the indium atoms
seem to make concerted, long jumps. Responsible for this motion is an ultra-low
density of surface vacancies, diffusing rapidly within the surface. This
interpretation is supported by a detailed analysis of the displacement
distribution of the indium atoms, which reveals a shape characteristic for the
vacancy mediated diffusion mechanism that we propose.Comment: 4 pages; for associated movie, see

Recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (filgrastim) following high-dose chemotherapy and peripheral blood progenitor cell rescue in high-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma: clinical benefits at no extra cost.
In order to evaluate the potential clinical and economic benefits of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF, filgrastim) following peripheral blood progenitor cells (PBPC) rescue after high-dose chemotherapy (HDCT), 23 consecutive patients aged less than 60 years with poor-prognosis, high-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) were entered into a prospective randomized trial between May 1993 and September 1995. Patients were randomized to receive either PBPC alone (n = 12) or PBPC+G-CSF (n = 11) after HDCT with busulphan and cyclophosphamide. G-CSF (300 microg day[-1]) was given from day +5 until recovery of granulocyte count to greater than 1.0 x 10(9) l(-1) for 2 consecutive days. The mean time to achieve a granulocyte count > 0.5 x 10(9) l(-1) was significantly shorter in the G-CSF arm (9.7 vs 13.2 days; P<0.0001) as was the median duration of hospital stay (12 vs 15 days; P = 0.001). In addition the recovery periods (range 9-12 vs 11-17 days to achieve a count of 1.0 x 10(9) l[-1]) and hospital stays (range 11-14 vs 13-22 days) were significantly less variable in patients receiving G-CSF in whom the values clustered around the median. There were no statistically significant differences between the study arms in terms of days of fever, documented episodes of bacteraemia, antimicrobial drug usage and platelet/red cell transfusion requirements. Taking into account the costs of total occupied-bed days, drugs, growth factor usage and haematological support, the mean expenditure per inpatient stay was pound sterling 6500 (range pound sterling 5465-pound sterling 8101) in the G-CSF group compared with pound sterling 8316 (range pound sterling 5953-pound sterling 15,801) in the group not receiving G-CSF, with an observed mean saving of 1816 per patient (or 22% of the total cost) in the G-CSF group. This study suggests that after HDCT and PBPC rescue, the use of G-CSF leads to more rapid haematological recovery periods and is associated with a more predictable and shorter hospital stay. Furthermore, and despite the additional costs for G-CSF, these clinical benefits are not translated into increased health care expenditure

A linear-time algorithm is presented for the construction of the Gibbs
distribution of configurations in the Ising model, on a quantum computer. The
algorithm is designed so that each run provides one configuration with a
quantum probability equal to the corresponding thermodynamic weight. The
partition function is thus approximated efficiently. The algorithm neither
suffers from critical slowing down, nor gets stuck in local minima. The

Towards Physical Hybrid Systems
Some hybrid systems models are unsafe for mathematically correct but
physically unrealistic reasons. For example, mathematical models can classify a
system as being unsafe on a set that is too small to have physical importance.
In particular, differences in measure zero sets in models of cyber-physical
systems (CPS) have significant mathematical impact on the mathematical safety
of these models even though differences on measure zero sets have no tangible
physical effect in a real system. We develop the concept of "physical hybrid
systems" (PHS) to help reunite mathematical models with physical reality. We
modify a hybrid systems logic (differential temporal dynamic logic) by adding a
first-class operator to elide distinctions on measure zero sets of time within
CPS models. This approach facilitates modeling since it admits the verification
of a wider class of models, including some physically realistic models that
would otherwise be classified as mathematically unsafe. We also develop a proof
calculus to help with the verification of PHS.Comment: CADE 201
Grundstate Properties of the 3D Ising Spin Glass
We study zero--temperature properties of the 3d Edwards--Anderson Ising spin
glass on finite lattices up to size . Using multicanonical sampling we
generate large numbers of groundstate configurations in thermal equilibrium.
Finite size scaling with a zero--temperature scaling exponent describes the data well. Alternatively, a descriptions in terms of Parisi
mean field behaviour is still possible. The two scenarios give significantly
