Large-scale educational telecommunications systems for the US: An analysis of educational needs and technological opportunities
The needs to be served, the subsectors in which the system might be used, the technology employed, and the prospects for future utilization of an educational telecommunications delivery system are described and analyzed. Educational subsectors are analyzed with emphasis on the current status and trends within each subsector. Issues which affect future development, and prospects for future use of media, technology, and large-scale electronic delivery within each subsector are included. Information on technology utilization is presented. Educational telecommunications services are identified and grouped into categories: public television and radio, instructional television, computer aided instruction, computer resource sharing, and information resource sharing. Technology based services, their current utilization, and factors which affect future development are stressed. The role of communications satellites in providing these services is discussed. Efforts to analyze and estimate future utilization of large-scale educational telecommunications are summarized. Factors which affect future utilization are identified. Conclusions are presented
Vibration isolation in a free-piston driven Expansion tube
The stress waves produced by rapid piston deceleration are a fundamental feature of free-piston driven expansion tubes, and wave propagation has to be considered in the design process. For lower enthalpy test conditions, these waves can traverse the tube ahead of critical flow processes, severely interfering with static pressure measurements of the passing flow. This paper details a new device which decouples the driven tube from the free-piston driver, and thus prevents transmission of stress waves. Following successful incorporation of the concept in the smaller X2 facility, it has now been applied to the larger X3 facility, and results for both facilities are presented
Discovery of pulsations in the X-ray transient 4U 1901+03
We describe observations of the 2003 outburst of the hard-spectrum X-ray
transient 4U 1901+03 with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. The outburst was
first detected in 2003 February by the All-Sky Monitor, and reached a peak
2.5-25 keV flux of 8x10^-9 ergs/cm^2/s (around 240 mCrab). The only other known
outburst occurred 32.2 yr earlier, likely the longest presently known
recurrence time for any X-ray transient. Proportional Counter Array (PCA)
observations over the 5-month duration of the 2003 outburst revealed a 2.763 s
pulsar in a 22.58 d orbit. The detection of pulsations down to a flux of
3x10^-11 ergs/cm^2/s (2.5-25 keV), along with the inferred long-term accretion
rate of 8.1x10^-11 M_sun/yr (assuming a distance of 10 kpc) suggests that the
surface magnetic field strength is below ~5x10^11 G. The corresponding
cyclotron energy is thus below 4 keV, consistent with the non-detection of
resonance features at high energies. Although we could not unambiguously
identify the optical counterpart, the lack of a bright IR candidate within the
1' RXTE error circle rules out a supergiant mass donor. The neutron star in 4U
1901+03 probably accretes from the wind of a main-sequence O-B star, like most
other high-mass binary X-ray pulsars. The almost circular orbit e=0.036
confirms the system's membership in a growing class of wide, low-eccentricity
systems in which the neutron stars may have received much smaller kicks as a

A simplified protocol for detecting two systemic bait markers (Rhodamine B and iophenoxic acid) in small mammals
We developed a method of quantifying levels of fluorescence in the whiskers of wild stoats (Mustela erminea) using fluorescence microscopy and Axiovision 3.0.6.1 software. The method allows for discrimination between natural fluorescence present in or on a whisker, and the fluorescence resulting from the ingestion of the systemic marker Rhodamine B (RB), although some visual judgement is still required. We also developed a new high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) protocol for detecting the systemic marker iophenoxic acid (IPA) in the blood of laboratory rats (Rattus norvegicus) and wild stoats. With this method, the blood of an animal that has consumed IPA can be tested for the presence of the foreign IPA compound itself. This is a more reliable test than the previous method, which measured the raised level of natural blood protein-bound iodine correlated with IPA absorption. The quantity of blood required from animal subjects is very small (10 μl), so the testing is less intrusive and the method can be extended to smaller species. The extraction technique uses methanol, rather than acids and heavy metal salts, thereby simplifying the procedure. Recovery of IPA is quantitative, giving a highly reliable reading. In experiments on captive rats the IPA method proved successful. Of 12 positively marked carcasses, two that had not been frozen for the 24 h before blood samples were taken showed relatively lower IPA levels. The same IPA detection method, as well as the whisker analysis for RB, was applied successfully to a population of wild stoats to which both Rhodamine B and IPA were made available at bait stations. The presence of both bait markers was detectable in rats for at least 21 days and in stoats for at least 27 days
Bolometric technique for high-resolution broadband microwave spectroscopy of ultra-low-loss samples
A novel low temperature bolometric method has been devised and implemented
for high-precision measurements of the microwave surface resistance of small
single-crystal platelet samples having very low absorption, as a continuous
function of frequency. The key to the success of this non-resonant method is
the in-situ use of a normal metal reference sample that calibrates the absolute
rf field strength. The sample temperature can be controlled independently of
the 1.2 K liquid helium bath, allowing for measurements of the temperature
evolution of the absorption. However, the instrument's sensitivity decreases at
higher temperatures, placing a limit on the useful temperature range. Using
this method, the minimum detectable power at 1.3 K is 1.5 pW, corresponding to
a surface resistance sensitivity of 1 for a typical 1

A Gapless Theory of Bose-Einstein Condensation in Dilute Gases at Finite Temperature
In this paper we develop a gapless theory of BEC which can be applied to both
trapped and homogeneous gases at zero and finite temperature. The many-body
Hamiltonian for the system is written in a form which is approximately
quadratic with higher order cubic and quartic terms. The quadratic part is
diagonalized exactly by transforming to a quasiparticle basis, while the
non-quadratic terms are dealt with using first and second order perturbation
theory. The conventional treatment of these terms, based on factorization
approximations, is shown to be inconsistent.
Infra-red divergences can appear in individual terms of the perturbation
expansion, but we show analytically that the total contribution beyond
quadratic order is finite. The resulting excitation spectrum is gapless and the
energy shifts are small for a dilute gas away from the critical region,
justifying the use of perturbation theory. Ultra-violet divergences can appear
if a contact potential is used to describe particle interactions. We show that
the use of this potential as an approximation to the two-body T-matrix leads
naturally to a high-energy renormalization.
The theory developed in this paper is therefore well-defined at both low and
high energy and provides a systematic description of Bose-Einstein condensation
in dilute gases. It can therefore be used to calculate the energies and decay
rates of the excitations of the system at temperatures approaching the phase

Toward the full CFD Simulation of expansion tubes
In order to perform ground testing in expansion tubes, it is highly desirable to characterize the facility by CFD, since the flow processing is very complex. Nevertheless 2D o 3D modelling requires tackling several questions that remains opened. The main challenge is to include piston dynamics, but for that, launcher station pressure loss must be accurately simulated. This paper explores conceptual CFD models aiming to demonstrate that these effects can be included accurately. Results show that there are significant pressure losses at the launcher brought by the supersonic flow jets found after the slots. The aim is to clear the path towards the development of a full facility model, including the long time-scale piston motion couped to the gas dynamics at the whole machine
The kinetics of surfactant desorption at the air–solution interface
The kinetics of desorption of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate at the air–solution interface have been studied using neutron reflectivity (NR). The experimental arrangement incorporates a novel flow cell in which the subphase can be exchanged (diluted) using a laminar flow whilst the surface region remains unaltered. The kinetics of the desorption is relatively slow and occurs over many tens of minutes compared with the dilution timescale of approximately 10–30 minutes. A detailed mathematical model, in which the rate of the desorption is determined by transport through a near-surface diffusion layer into a diluted bulk solution below, is developed and provides a good description of the timedependent adsorption data.\ud

A key parameter of the model is the ratio of the depth of the diffusion layer, Hc , to the depth of the fluid, Hf, and we find that this is related to the reduced Péclet number, Pe*, for the system, via Hc/Hf, = C/Pe* 1/ 2 . Although from a highly idealised experimental arrangement, the results provide an important insight into the ‘rinse mechanism’, which is applicable to a wide variety of domestic and industrial circumstances
