iLRN 2018 Main Conference Preface
iLRN 2018. Conferência realizada em Missoula, MT, USA, de 24-29 de junho de 2018.ILRN 2018 was the fourth annual international conference of the Immersive Learning Network. It followed on from the inaugural conference held in Prague in July 2015, the second conference held in Santa Barbara in June 2016, and the third conference held in Coimbra, Portugal, in 2017. In response to the increasingly accessible and powerful range of VR and AR technology, the vision of the iLRN is to develop a comprehensive research and outreach agenda that encompasses the breadth and scope of learning potentialities, affordances, and challenges of immersive learning environments. To achieve this, the
iLRN invites and hosts scientists, practitioners, organizations, and innovators across many disciplines to explore, describe, and apply the optimal use of immersive worlds and environments for educational purposes. The annual conference aims to explain and demonstrate how these immersive learning environments best work. In 2018, 21 formal papers were received for the main conference and after a rigorous reviewing process six were selected for this Springer publication (28% acceptance rate). The authors of these
papers come from institutions located in Brazil, Germany, the UK, and the USA (Florida, Texas, California).
The main conference papers cover a range of interesting topics in some depth, providing useful information for other educators and researchers. Alvarez-Molina et al. report on how video games can help players develop their musical skills and illustrate this by creating and evaluating a music-video game that aims to improve the key skill of pitch recognition. Bakri et al. investigate the subjective perception of the fidelity of
3D cultural heritage artifacts on the Web and how this affects the user experience. De León reports on the promising results of utilizing problem-based learning for bridging theory and practice in teacher preparation programs through the use of immersive, ill-structured problems in a multi-user virtual environment that simulates a real school. Feenan draws upon 10 years of studies into the use of digital game-based learning as the basis of an analysis that recommends a five-pronged approach to the successful use of games to support social resiliency skills for students in a fast-changing world. Johnson and Sullivan describe a pilot study that identifies three key strategies for making students feel more comfortable and productive in an experimental game design class. Queiroz et al. present a literature review of learning outcomes from using fully HMD-based IVE in primary/K-12 education, highlighting relevant studies, identifying gaps, and providing insights for use in further research. This informative and fascinating collection of papers reflects the emerging and valuable possibilities of immersive learning research. We know you will find many points of interest and use in the well-presented reports in this collection. Finally, we strongly encourage you to join ILRN and contribute your own insights and research to the community.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Single-particle model for a granular ratchet
A simple model for a granular ratchet corresponding to a single grain
bouncing off a vertically vibrating sawtooth-like base is studied. Depending on
the vibration strength, the sawtooth roughness and the restitution coefficient,
horizontal transport in both the preferred and unfavoured directions is
observed. A phase diagram indicating the regions in parameter space where each
of the three possible regimes (no current, normal current, and current
reversal) occurs is presented.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Physica
Reuse of ancient megalithics monuments during Metal Ages: the dolmen of Serrinha (Monforte, Portugal).
The set of funerary megalithic monuments in the Alentejo region (Portugal) presents a great variety in its architectures, but also in their uses and reuses. Although often undocumented (in the case of ancient excavations), the collections in the Museums prove their use between the Neolithic Age and at least the Iron Age.
The Dolmen of Serrinha (Monforte) recently excavated by the signatories, is a good example of the reuse of necropolis spaces during Metal Ages
Semantically Consistent Regularization for Zero-Shot Recognition
The role of semantics in zero-shot learning is considered. The effectiveness
of previous approaches is analyzed according to the form of supervision
provided. While some learn semantics independently, others only supervise the
semantic subspace explained by training classes. Thus, the former is able to
constrain the whole space but lacks the ability to model semantic correlations.
The latter addresses this issue but leaves part of the semantic space
unsupervised. This complementarity is exploited in a new convolutional neural
network (CNN) framework, which proposes the use of semantics as constraints for
recognition.Although a CNN trained for classification has no transfer ability,
this can be encouraged by learning an hidden semantic layer together with a
semantic code for classification. Two forms of semantic constraints are then
introduced. The first is a loss-based regularizer that introduces a
generalization constraint on each semantic predictor. The second is a codeword
regularizer that favors semantic-to-class mappings consistent with prior
semantic knowledge while allowing these to be learned from data. Significant
improvements over the state-of-the-art are achieved on several datasets.Comment: Accepted to CVPR 201
A qualitative Langevin-like model for the coexistence of two distinct granular temperatures
In the present work, we study qualitatively the physics of granular
temperature coexistence, for a mixture of two different species. Our model
captures its essential aspects and this allows us to get insights on the
physical mechanisms of distinct temperature coexistence, in a way which is not
obscured by the complexities of kinetic theories or numerical simulations. Our
simple model is consistent with limit situations where we should expect
equality for the granular temperatures for the mixture.Comment: Accepted to be published on Physica
Reidemeister torsion and Integrable Hamiltonian systems
In this paper we compute the Reidemeister torsion of a isoenergetic surface
for the integrable Hamiltonian system on the four-dimensional symplectic
manifold. We use the spectral sequence defined by the filtration and following
Witten-Floer ideas we bring into play the orbits connecting the critical
submanifolds.Comment: 18 pages, amstex, 47 KB, no figure
