Phenomenological Consequences of the Constrained Exceptional Supersymmetric Standard Model
The Exceptional Supersymmetric Standard Model (ESSM) provides a low
energy alternative to the MSSM, with an extra gauged U(1) symmetry, solving
the -problem of the MSSM. Inspired by the possible embedding into an E
GUT, the matter content fills three generations of E multiplets, thus
predicting exciting exotic matter such as diquarks or leptoquarks. We present
predictions from a constrained version of the model (cESSM), with a
universal scalar mass , trilinear mass and gaugino mass . We
reveal a large volume of the cESSM parameter space where the correct
breakdown of the gauge symmetry is achieved and all experimental constraints
satisfied. We predict a hierarchical particle spectrum with heavy scalars and
light gauginos, while the new exotic matter can be light or heavy depending on
parameters. We present representative cESSM scenarios, demonstrating that
there could be light exotic particles, like leptoquarks and a U(1) Z'
boson, with spectacular signals at the LHC.Comment: Contribution to the proceedings of SUSY 09, Boston, USA, June 2009, 4

Fabrication of optical planar waveguides in by He-ion implantation
In this paper, planar waveguides produced by He-ion implantation have been demonstrated in undoped and Yb-doped KY(WO/sub 4/)/sub 2/ crystals. The effective refractive indices of guided modes in surface planar waveguides were measured by dark m-line spectroscopy and the refractive index profiles were reconstructed by calculations based on the inverse WKB method. The end-faces of implanted crystals were polished and the waveguiding properties of the obtained planar structures were investigated using a laser diode at 980 nm and a CCD camera
LHC Signatures of the Constrained Exceptional Supersymmetric Standard Model
We discuss two striking Large Hadron Collider (LHC) signatures of the
constrained version of the exceptional supersymmetric standard model (cE6SSM),
based on a universal high energy soft scalar mass m_0, soft trilinear coupling
A_0 and soft gaugino mass M_{1/2}. The first signature we discuss is that of
light exotic colour triplet charge 1/3 fermions, which we refer to as
D-fermions. We calculate the LHC production cross section of D-fermions, and
discuss their decay patterns. Secondly we discuss the E6 type U(1)_N spin-1 Z'
gauge boson and show how it may decay into exotic states, increasing its width
and modifying the line shape of the dilepton final state. We illustrate these
features using two representative cE6SSM benchmark points, including an "early
LHC discovery" point, giving the Feynman rules and numerical values for the
relevant couplings in order to facilitate further studies.Comment: 30 pages, 5 figures, corrections to figure caption
FIMEC Test to evaluate thewater uptake of coated and uncoated CFRP composites
This study focuses on the application of the FIMEC (flat-top cylinder indenter for mechanical characterization) indentation test to evaluate the effect of water uptake on the mechanical properties of high-performance materials, in particular CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced polymer) composites. Coated and uncoated samples were analyzed. Silicon-based and siloxane coatings were formulated and applied to CFRP to reduce the moisture absorption of the material. The FIMEC test was adopted to study the reduction of the stiffness of CFRP plates for different ageing in water. The evolution of mechanical properties is reported as a function of the water uptake. IR analyses and weight variation measures were used as supporting data. Experimental results show that the FIMEC test is suitable to assess the stiffness reduction due to the aging in water and to identify coatings able to minimize the water uptake

Space weathering, reddening and gardening of asteroids: A complex problem
The association of ordinary chondrites and their parent bodies through their visible and near infrared spectra is still a debate. In fact, many asteroids show reddened spectra, while the ordinary chondrites do not. In the framework of the space weathering of asteroid surfaces, the interpretation of the reddening, darkening, and depletion of band depths is not as simple as previously described. We present a summary of the recent results in the study of the reddening of the spectra. To date, different mechanisms have been proposed to explain some properties of spectra, but a complete scenario capable of reproducing the whole set of observations is still missing. (C) 2007 COSPAR. Fabrication of optical planar and channel waveguides in Yb3+ doped KY(WO4)2 by He-ion implantation
Light ion implantation can be regarded as a universal tool for fabricating low-loss waveguide structures in optically active oxide materials. We have fabricated planar optical waveguides in :(2%) crystals by implanting He+ ions at 1.5 MeV, with doses ranging from 1 to 3x10^16 ions/cm2. An optical barrier with a decreased effective refractive index was created at the end of the ions' tracks, situated approximately 3.5 μm below the surface. The change in refractive index with respect to the bulk value and its stability to thermal treatment were investigated by dark m-line spectroscopy. Surface channel waveguides were obtained by writing sidewalls into the planar guiding layer by implantation through a slit. The sidewalls were produced by keeping the ion energy fixed and varying the incident angle of implantation. Channel waveguides of 5-μm width and 4-μm depth were obtained in the regions between the implanted sidewalls. Beam-propagation parameters were measured by investigating the output profile of end-coupled, fundamental-mode laser light at 980 nm. The results of loss measurements will be presented at the conference
