In recent years, technological advancements have enabled higher-learning institutions to offer millions of independent learners the opportunity to participate in open-access online courses. As this practice expands, drawing considerable media attention, questions continue to arise regarding pedagogical methodology and the long-term viability of open learning. Furthering Higher Education Possibilities through Massive Open Online Courses seeks to provide a space for discussion of MOOCs: what they mean for the learning process, how they are redefining the concept of a classroom, and what effects they may have on the role of teachers. Featuring emerging research on a variety of topics relating to distance education, informal learning, as well as educational costs and funding, this book is aimed at teachers, administrators, business professionals, and designers of both curricular resources and e-classroom technology.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Do you speak wine tourism?

The latest forecasts for the Portuguese tourist industry show that it will represent 16% of the Portuguese GNP very soon and, for 2017, the State Statistical Office registered over 3.5 million guests visiting the North of Portugal and around 7.4 million overnight stays in the region’s tourist accommodation, which makes it safe to say that investing in projects that foster a common language in business communication will not only result in tangible financial gains but also in improved multi-cultural and multilingual understanding. Companies need, thus, to communicate seamlessly in a fully internationalised and digital world challenges companies to meet the need to systematise and harmonise language to properly convey meaning, thus promoting successful business undertakings. Such a need, a direct consequence of the phenomenon of globalisation and internationalisation of scientific and technological knowledge, becomes clear in a region with all the necessary elements to anchor sustainable growth, namely the four locations classified as UNESCO’s World Heritage sites (Porto’s historic center, Alto Douro wine region, Côa Valley Archeological Park and Guimarães Historic Center). “WiTo - Do you speak wine tourism?” is a project, supported by a PhD thesis, that aims at creating an electronic multilingual thesaurus the wine tourism experts will consider a useful tool for communicating with different publics (experts and non-experts). Thus, we will have to determine which subjects and technical know-how are considered core, complementary and cross-sectional to wine tourism, leading to the conceptual representation of wine tourism specialised language (which, in turn, will allow for structuring and harmonization of the linguistic heritage clearly visible in the area’s terminology). This project aims at providing the necessary basis for optimising knowledge transfer (thus promoting a faster flow of technical and scientific information) and its implementation in tourism information systems and electronic support platforms. This article aims at giving an overview of the current research in this area and presenting WiTo by highlighting some of its preliminary results and discussing some of the open questions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

As globalization provided a more efficient path to mobility meanwhile facilitating the search for information, the urge to travel and seek new cultures became intense. People from around the world engaged in the act of traveling more deeply than what was known previously. The backpacker phenomenon evolved into a lifestyle, as being a tourist simply was not fulfilling for this new generation of travelers; an evolution of Cohen’s “drifters”. Backpacking culture has been growing exponentially over the years, becoming the answer for young, creative, and adventurous individuals to find freedom and life purpose. Through the creation of cowork spaces, the objective is to develop an environment of mutual help, embracing new connections and, above all, strengthen productivity. This article aims at analyzing digital nomadism in the context of digital transformation and present a case study - Selina -, as an example of innovation and creativity from the hospitality business. Our focus will be an approach to the organizational culture of the company which appropriates itself and encourages new behaviors (coworking) as a way to attract digital nomads for its business.

As globalization provided a more efficient path to mobility meanwhile facilitating the search for information, the urge to travel and seek new cultures became intense. People from around the world engaged in the act of traveling more deeply than what was known previously. The backpacker phenomenon evolved into a lifestyle, as being a tourist simply was not fulfilling for this new generation of travellers; an evolution of Cohen’s “drifters”. Backpacking culture has been growing exponentially over the years, becoming the answer for young, creative, and adventurous individuals to find freedom and life purpose. Consequently, as digital transformation takes over due to a market in need of change and innovation, the work regulation adapts itself to flexible schedules, remote work and begins to value change in organizational culture as a major factor inside each business. Moreover, as digital nomadism progresses, spreads a high concern from companies to extend their vision and include this profile as their workers. Through the creation of cowork spaces, the objective is to develop an environment of mutual help, embracing new connections and, above all, strengthen productivity. With this in mind, this article aims to briefly present and analyze a case study - Selina -, as an example of innovation and creativity in the hospitality business. This is a company that targets backpackers and digital nomads, creating a market strategy suitable not only for them but locals as well, by enhancing intercultural exchange. Our focus will be an approach to the creation and organization of Selina, the beliefs of its’ employees and values inside the firm, and how that internal culture is in consensus with that of the audience they wish to capture. Furthermore, following the same line of thinking and on a detail attempt, understanding how the company appropriates itself and encourages new behaviors (coworking) as a way to attract clients for its business.O processo de globalização veio permitir uma mobilidade mais eficiente, ao mesmo tempo facilitando a procura e obtenção de informação.

Optimization and Automation of the Nuclear Reaction Chamber

The production of vacuum is usually a very lengthy process that occupies precious research time. When dealing with many samples, the amount of times vacuum will have to be produced is directly tied to the number of samples a sample holder can take. This problem becomes much more important when dealing with samples that take longer to generate vacuum in the vacuum chamber, such as biological samples. Associated with this work is the construction of a new sample holder capable of holding up to fifteen samples, a new lid associated with the necessities of the new design, the incorporation of a linear feedthrough and a rotary platform, the construction of a new faraday cage to minimize associated noise and coding to automatically alternate between samples in both a linear and angular fashion. This new setup is going to be mounted in the target chamber of the nuclear reactions beam line of the 3.0 MV tandem accelerator located at CTN-IST (Bobadela Campus) and will give the nuclear reactions group new analysis capabilities. The design of the new parts was done with the usage of SolidWorks, and the development of the code was done with the usage of both Python for the user interface and Arduino for the control of the motors motion.

How higher education teachers are using web technology in their education activities: a case study

    Get PDF
Internet technologies, mobile phone and social media have brought new challenges to higher education. E-learning has been gaining a huge acceptance among educators, especially in Higher Education Institutions (HEI). This happens due to the exponential growth of the use of Internet and educational technologies that have fostered deep transformations in the teaching-learning process and paradigm. Our institution began e-learning activities in 2003 with WebCT, but soon changed its approach with the adoption of the open source platform Moodle (Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) and the integration of specialized staff to assist teachers and students on a daily basis. Since then, there is evidence that the b-learning model has been maturing the school's educational culture, according to the teacher's willingness or availability to integrate technology in the teaching-learning process. However, it is important to know if the integration of web technology in the teaching-learning process is being combined with a shift in the pedagogical methodologies, and if teachers are taking full advantage of the capabilities offered by these learning environments and not using learning management systems as simple digital libraries for learning contents for students to download. To answer those questions we present a case study that describes how teachers have been using web technology to support their learning/teaching activities. We discuss the results of the analyses made on about 200 teachers' interactions according to different points of view and criteria. This analysis will focus mainly on the technological but also on pedagogical achievements, also on the challenges there are still to overcome and propose a set of good practices to support a more rewarding use of e-learning environments.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Nowadays, a constant concern with the quality level of the educative/educational offers in Institutions of Higher Education is verifiable. In order to accomplish that, they should acquire the capacity/capability to adapt to the new characteristics of their target audience and the new communication and information technologies that emerge every day. In such context, and as an answer to the upcoming demands, ISCAP (School of Accounting and Administration has initiated a project called PAOL – Projecto de Apoio On-Line (On-Line Support Project). Its main goal is to provide support to the implementation of computer assisted teaching, it being constituted by human and material resources (software – an open source LMS, called Moodle, and hardware). This article intends to reveal the knowledge acquired throughout the experience in the use of the LMS Moodle at ISCAP, in the second semester of the 2004/2005 school year.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Terminology Management for Social Media Communication During Covid 19 Pandemic: A Case Study with a Portuguese Higher Education Institution

    Get PDF
The process of attracting new students is a constant challenge for Portuguese Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). It is challenging because it implies the definition of a communication strategy that uses both traditional and digital tactics to promote the institution and its educational offer. Considering the constraints resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, HEIs had to change their strategies and, in a short period, create digital communication mechanisms to facilitate new students' access to relevant information about the institution. This paper intends thus to determine and evaluate which are the predominant factors in seeking information about a degree in business sciences, specifically regarding the Porto Accounting and Business School in Portugal. To do that, we will consider the various factors that tend to influence the decision-making process of choosing a higher education degree, namely: the institutional website, social networks (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube), other contact mechanisms (live chat, e-mail, text messages, ZOOM videoconference) and alumni testimonials. This study will also consider the role of terminology and positive language to obtain a successful communication strategy for social media. The analysis of these factors, combined with research developed with a focus group of high school students' graduates to assess their online preferences, will allow the presentation of a digital communication proposal whose purpose is to attract and retain new students. This proposal will consider the role of a strategic terminology management approach to capture students' attention when responding to their social media preferences. This paper results from the perception that being aware of the students' online preferences and communication skills and needs is essential to enhance the quality of the digital communication that HEIs promote in social media channels, especially in a time frame as specific and multifaceted as the one that we are currently experiencing.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Get PDF

Supporting collaboration in multilingual ontology specification: the conceptME approach

    Get PDF
Despite the availability of tools, resources and techniques aimed at the construction of ontological artifacts, developing a shared conceptualization of a given reality still raises questions about the principles and methods that support the initial phases of conceptualization. These questions become more complex when the conceptualization occurs in a multilingual setting. To tackle these issues a collaborative platform – conceptME - was developed where terminological and knowledge representation processes support domain experts throughout a conceptualization framework, allowing the inclusion of multilingual data to promote knowledge sharing and enhance conceptualization.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
