DSP-based ionospheric radiolink using DS-CDMA and on-line channel estimation
In this paper, a new blind multiuser detection algorithm is presented. It can both cancel multiuser interference and estimate the multipath channel response in a blind way. The method has been specially conceived for low coherence bandwidth channels such as the ionospheric channel and exhibits very low computational requirements. The mass ratio distribution of short period double degenerate stars
Short period double degenerates (DDs) are close white dwarf - white dwarf
binary stars which are the result of the evolution of interacting binary stars.
We present the first definitive measurements of the mass ratio for two DDs,
WD0136+768 and WD1204+450, and an improved measurement of the mass ratio for
WD0957-666. We compare the properties of the 6 known DDs with measured mass
ratios to the predictions of various theoretical models. We confirm the result
that standard models for the formation of DDs do not predict sufficient DDs
with mass ratios near 1. We also show that the observed difference in cooling
ages between white dwarfs in DDs is a useful constraint on the initial mass
ratio of the binary. A more careful analysis of the properties of the white
dwarf pair WD1704+481.2 leads us to conclude that the brighter white dwarf is
older than its fainter companion. This is the opposite of the usual case for
DDs and is caused by the more massive white dwarf being smaller and cooling
faster. The mass ratio in the sense (mass of younger star)/(mass of older star)
is then 1.43+-0.06 rather than the value 0.70+-0.03 given previously.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
X-ray Emission from the Weak-lined T Tauri Binary System KH 15D
The unique eclipsing, weak-lined T Tauri star KH 15D has been detected as an
X-ray source in a 95.7 ks exposure from the Chandra X-ray Observatory archives.
A maximum X-ray luminosity of 1.5 x 10^{29} erg s is derived in the
0.5--8 keV band, corresponding to L_{X}/L_bol = 7.5 x 10^{-5}. Comparison with
samples of stars of similar effective temperature in NGC 2264 and in the Orion
Nebula Cluster shows that this is about an order of magnitude low for a typical
star of its mass and age. We argue that the relatively low luminosity cannot be
attributed to absorption along the line of sight but implies a real deficiency
in X-ray production. Possible causes for this are considered in the context of
a recently proposed eccentric binary model for KH 15D. In particular, we note
that the visible component rotates rather slowly for a weak-lined T Tauri star
and has possibly been pseudosynchronized by tidal interaction with the primary
near periastron
Biological characteristics and mortality of western butterfish (Pentapodus vitta), an abundant bycatch species of prawn trawling and recreational fishing in a large subtropical embayment
The western butterfish (Pentapodus vitta) is numerous in the bycatch of prawn trawling and recreational fishing in Shark Bay, Western Australia. We have thus determined crucial aspects of its biological characteristics and the potential impact of fishing on its abundance within this large subtropical marine embayment. Although both sexes attained a maximum age of 8 years, males grow more rapidly and to a larger size. Maturity is attained at the end of the first year of life and spawning occurs between October and January. The use of a Bayesian approach to combine independent estimates for total mortality, Z, and natural mortality, M, yielded slightly higher point estimates for Z than M. This result indicates that P. vitta is lightly impacted by fishing. It is relevant that, potentially, the individuals can spawn twice before recruitment into the fishery and that 73% of recreationally caught individuals are returned live to the water

En este documento se presenta una herramienta tecnológica que puede ser muy útil para mejorar el nivel académico en las áreas rurales de nuestro país y adicionalmente en sectores urbanos. Mostrando primero indicadores que reflejan la realidad del país en los últimos tiempos, además analizar causas que provocaron el bajo nivel educativo del sistema público. Luego se describen las principales características de la tecnología aparte de estudiar el funcionamiento en su versión satelital (DVB-S).Posteriormente se detallan los componentes necesarios para implementar la red de teleeducación, su configuración, plan para definir el grupo de trabajo y su perfil idóneo para trabajar en este proyecto. Continuando con un enfoque del proyecto desde el ámbito legal, para tener una idea clara acerca de los procedimientos a seguir para cumplir con las leyes de la nación. Y finalmente se exponen datos sobre estudiantes y docentes tanto en sectores rurales como urbanos, especificando un modelo que se pueda realizar desde el estado, beneficiando a todo el sistema educativo público, siendo sustentable económicamente
The triple degenerate star WD1704+481
WD1704+481 is a visual binary in which both components are white dwarfs. We
present spectra of the H-alpha line of both stars which show that one component
(WD1704+481.2 = Sanduleak B = GR 577) is a close binary with two white dwarf
components. Thus, WD1704+481 is the first known triple degenerate star. From
radial velocity measurements of the close binary we find an orbital period of
0.1448d, a mass ratio, q=Mbright/Mfaint of q=0.70+-0.03 and a difference in the
gravitational redshifts of 11.5+-2.3km/s. The masses of the close pair of white
dwarfs predicted by the mass ratio and gravitational redshift difference
combined with theoretical cooling curves are 0.39+-0.05 solar mass and
0.56+-0.07 solar masses. WD1704+481 is therefore also likely to be the first
example of a double degenerate in which the less massive white dwarf is
composed of helium and the other white dwarf is composed of carbon and oxygen.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Field dependent collision frequency of the two-dimensional driven random Lorentz gas
In the field-driven, thermostatted Lorentz gas the collision frequency
increases with the magnitude of the applied field due to long-time
correlations. We study this effect with computer simulations and confirm the
presence of non-analytic terms in the field dependence of the collision
