Physical properties of single crystalline BaSn5
We present a comprehensive study of the binary intermetallic superconductor,
BaSn5. High-quality single crystalline BaSn5 was grown out of Sn flux. Detailed
thermodynamic and transport measurements were performed to study BaSn5's normal
and superconducting state properties. This material appears to be a strongly
coupled, multiband superconductor. Hc2(T)is almost isotropic. De Haas-van
Alphen oscillations were observed and two effective masses were estimated from
the FFT spectra. Hydrostatic pressure causes a decrease in the superconducting
transition temperature at the rate of ~ -0.053 K/kbar.Comment: 8 pages and 9 figure
JS-K, a Nitric Oxide Prodrug, Has Enhanced Cytotoxicity in Colon Cancer Cells with Knockdown of Thioredoxin Reductase 1
The selenoenzyme thioredoxin reductase 1 has a complex role relating to cell growth. It is induced as a component of the cellular response to potentially mutagenic oxidants, but also appears to provide growth advantages to transformed cells by inhibiting apoptosis. In addition, selenocysteine-deficient or alkylated forms of thioredoxin reductase 1 have also demonstrated oxidative, pro-apoptotic activity. Therefore, a greater understanding of the role of thioredoxin reductase in redox initiated apoptotic processes is warranted.The role of thioredoxin reductase 1 in RKO cells was evaluated by attenuating endogenous thioredoxin reductase 1 expression with siRNA and then either inducing a selenium-deficient thioredoxin reductase or treatment with distinct redox challenges including, hydrogen peroxide, an oxidized lipid, 4-hydroxy-2-nonenol, and a nitric oxide donating prodrug. Thioredoxin redox status, cellular viability, and effector caspase activity were measured.In cells with attenuated endogenous thioredoxin reductase 1, a stably integrated selenocysteine-deficient form of the enzyme was induced but did not alter either the thioredoxin redox status or the cellular growth kinetics. The oxidized lipid and the nitric oxide donor demonstrated enhanced cytotoxicity when thioredoxin reductase 1 was knocked-down; however, the effect was more pronounced with the nitric oxide prodrug. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that attenuation of the thioredoxin-system can promote apoptosis in a nitric oxide-dependent manner
Observations and modeling of H_2 fluorescence with partial frequency redistribution in giant planet atmospheres
Partial frequency redistribution (PRD), describing the formation of the line
profile, has negligible observational effects for optical depths smaller than
~10^3, at the resolving power of most current instruments. However, when the
spectral resolution is sufficiently high, PRD modeling becomes essential in
interpreting the line shapes and determining the total line fluxes. We
demonstrate the effects of PRD on the H_2 line profiles observed at high
spectral resolution by the Far-Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) in the
atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn. In these spectra, the asymmetric shapes of
the lines in the Lyman (v"- 6) progression pumped by the solar Ly-beta are
explained by coherent scattering of the photons in the line wings. We introduce
a simple computational approximation to mitigate the numerical difficulties of
radiative transfer with PRD, and show that it reproduces the exact radiative
transfer solution to better than 10%. The lines predicted by our radiative
transfer model with PRD, including the H_2 density and temperature distribution
as a function of height in the atmosphere, are in agreement with the line
profiles observed by FUSE. We discuss the observational consequences of PRD,
and show that this computational method also allows us to include PRD in
modeling the continuum pumped H_2 fluorescence, treating about 4000 lines

HST/STIS Ultraviolet Imaging of Polar Aurora on Ganymede
We report new observations of the spectrum of Ganymede in the spectral range
1160 - 1720 A made with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on HST
on 1998 October 30. The observations were undertaken to locate the regions of
the atomic oxygen emissions at 1304 and 1356 A, previously observed with the
GHRS on HST, that Hall et al. (1998) claimed indicated the presence of polar
aurorae on Ganymede. The use of the 2" wide STIS slit, slightly wider than the
disk diameter of Ganymede, produced objective spectra with images of the two
oxygen emissions clearly separated. The OI emissions appear in both
hemispheres, at latitudes above 40 degrees, in accordance with recent Galileo
magnetometer data that indicate the presence of an intrinsic magnetic field
such that Jovian magnetic field lines are linked to the surface of Ganymede
only at high latitudes. Both the brightness and relative north-south intensity
of the emissions varied considerably over the four contiguous orbits (5.5
hours) of observation, presumably due to the changing Jovian plasma environment
at Ganymede. However, the observed longitudinal non-uniformity in the emission
brightness at high latitudes, particularly in the southern hemisphere, and the
lack of pronounced limb brightening near the poles are difficult to understand
with current models. In addition to observed solar HI Lyman-alpha reflected
from the disk, extended Lyman-alpha emission resonantly scattered from a
hydrogen exosphere is detected out to beyond two Ganymede radii from the limb,
and its brightness is consistent with the Galileo UVS measurements of Barth et

Targeting transferrin receptors at the blood-brain barrier improves the uptake of immunoliposomes and subsequent cargo transport into the brain parenchyma
Abstract Drug delivery to the brain is hampered by the presence of the blood-brain barrier, which excludes most molecules from freely diffusing into the brain, and tightly regulates the active transport mechanisms that ensure sufficient delivery of nutrients to the brain parenchyma. Harnessing the possibility of delivering neuroactive drugs by way of receptors already present on the brain endothelium has been of interest for many years. The transferrin receptor is of special interest since its expression is limited to the endothelium of the brain as opposed to peripheral endothelium. Here, we investigate the possibility of delivering immunoliposomes and their encapsulated cargo to the brain via targeting of the transferrin receptor. We find that transferrin receptor-targeting increases the association between the immunoliposomes and primary endothelial cells in vitro, but that this does not correlate with increased cargo transcytosis. Furthermore, we show that the transferrin receptor-targeted immunoliposomes accumulate along the microvessels of the brains of rats, but find no evidence for transcytosis of the immunoliposome. Conversely, the increased accumulation correlated both with increased cargo uptake in the brain endothelium and subsequent cargo transport into the brain. These findings suggest that transferrin receptor-targeting is a relevant strategy of increasing drug exposure to the brain

FORTIS: Pathfinder to the Lyman Continuum
Shull et al. (1999) have asserted that the contribution of stars, relative to
quasars, to the metagalactic background radiation that ionizes most of the
baryons in the universe remains almost completely unknown at all epochs. The
potential to directly quantify this contribution at low redshift has recently
become possible with the identification by GALEX of large numbers of sparsely
distributed faint ultraviolet galaxies. Neither STIS nor FUSE nor GALEX have
the ability to efficiently survey these sparse fields and directly measure the
Lyman continuum radiation that may leak into the low redshift (z < 0.4)
intergalactic medium. We present here a design for a new type of far
ultraviolet spectrograph, one that is more sensitive, covers wider fields, and
can provide spectra and images of a large number of objects simultaneously,
called the Far-ultraviolet Off Rowland-circle Telescope for Imaging and
Spectroscopy (FORTIS). We intend to use a sounding rocket flight to validate
the new instrument with a simple long-slit observation of the starburst
populations in the galaxy M83. If however, the long-slit were replaced with
microshutter array, this design could isolate the chains of blue galaxies found
by GALEX over an ~30' diameter field-of-view and directly address the Lyman
continuum problem in a long duration orbital mission. Thus, our development of
the sounding rocket instrument is a pathfinder to a new wide field
spectroscopic technology for enabling the potential discovery of the long
hypothesized but elusive Lyman continuum radiation that is thought to leak from

Far-ultraviolet Spectroscopy of Venus and Mars at 4 A Resolution with the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope on Astro-2
Far-ultraviolet spectra of Venus and Mars in the range 820-1840 A at 4 A
resolution were obtained on 13 and 12 March 1995, respectively, by the Hopkins
Ultraviolet Telescope (HUT), which was part of the Astro-2 observatory on the
Space Shuttle Endeavour. Longward of 1250 A, the spectra of both planets are
dominated by emission of the CO Fourth Positive band system and strong OI and
CI multiplets. In addition, CO Hopfield-Birge bands, B - X (0,0) at 1151 A and
C - X (0,0) at 1088 A, are detected for the first time, and there is a weak
indication of the E - X (0,0) band at 1076 A in the spectrum of Venus. The B -
X band is blended with emission from OI 1152. Modeling the relative intensities
of these bands suggests that resonance fluorescence of CO is the dominant
source of the emission, as it is for the Fourth Positive system. Shortward of
Lyman-alpha, other emission features detected include OII 834, OI lambda 989,
HI Lyman-beta, and NI 1134 and 1200. For Venus, the derived disk brightnesses
of the OI, OII, and HI features are about one-half of those reported by Hord et
al. (1991) from Galileo EUV measurements made in February 1990. This result is
consistent with the expected variation from solar maximum to solar minimum. The
ArI 1048, 1066 doublet is detected only in the spectrum of Mars and the derived
mixing ratio of Ar is of the order of 2%, consistent with previous
