Dueling Bands and Good Girls: Gender and Music in Luanda's musseques, 1961-1974
This article explores the relationship between gender and the musical production of nation in Luanda, Angola’s musseques (urban shantytowns).
Urban Africans took advantage of reforms in colonial policy that followed the outbreak of anti-colonial struggle in 1961 to improve their daily lives and create new cultural spaces and practices. The production of semba, a local form of urban popular music, was at the forefront of this process. While men and women both attended clubs, men were overwhelmingly the producers of music and this gendered dynamic of musical production marked a shift in the involvement of women as cultural producers at this important moment when music and nation became intertwined
Radio Remediated: Sissako's Life on Earth and Sembène's Moolaadé
Remediation is a noted phenomenon in cinema studies. How it operates in African films has been less parsed. This article examines Abderrahmane Sissako’s La vie sur Terre (1998) and Ousmane Sembène’s Moolaadé (2004), two films with distinct approaches to the remediation of radio. I argue that postcolonial African media contexts, where national cinemas struggle (Nollywood excepted) and radio thrives, compel us to read remediation’s tensions as locally rendered and politically charged. As these media interact on film they pose questions about visuality, sound, and broadcasting that fortify the film narratives and challenge media ideologies of the continent
BONGA'S TRANSATLANTIC ROUTES
This work is a study of the album Angola 74 de Bonga to analyze the relations about Bomga and his music. Bonga observed the daily life in Kipiri, where he was born, and the day-to-day experience in Luanda's musseques and the impact of music in the region. Its “roots” and its source (Pereira, 2018; Eduardo, 2012). But the song “Ghinawa” from Angola 74, in sounds and history, suggests routes and not roots. Listening carefully, I trace a transatlantic urban trajectory for Bonga's work
