Winter Pasture Investigations with Beef Calves
In Tennessee the value of winter pasture in the wintering ration for producing slaughter and stocker cattle was unknown. No information was available on the type carcasses that could be produced by a ration involving winter pasture. Other problems which needed investigation were ; cost of producing winter pasture, soil types best suited for winter pasture, size and kind of animals to use, rate of grazing and the effects of varying amounts of moisture and temperature.
Because of the state\u27s wide soil and climatic variation, winter pasture projects were started at four locations of University of Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Stations; namely, Tobacco Experiment Station, Greeneville, Main Experiment Station, Knoxville, Middle Tennessee Experiment Station, Columbia and West Tennessee Experiment Station, Jackson. Projects were started at these stations in the fall of 1949 with the following objectives:
1. To study the use of winter pasture for wintering and finishing calves.
2. To compare the effect of different rations, when fed with winter pasture, to produce slaughter and stocker cattle.
3. To study the reception at Tennessee markets of yearlings carried to a good to choice finish largely on pasture and roughage.
4. To evaluate the market reception and qualities of carcasses from calves fed on silage, hay and concentrates
Time- and Communication-Efficient Overlay Network Construction via Gossip
We focus on the well-studied problem of distributed overlay network
construction. We consider a synchronous gossip-based communication model where
in each round a node can send a message of small size to another node whose
identifier it knows. The network is assumed to be reconfigurable, i.e., a node
can add new connections (edges) to other nodes whose identifier it knows or
drop existing connections. Each node initially has only knowledge of its own
identifier and the identifiers of its neighbors. The overlay construction
problem is, given an arbitrary (connected) graph, to reconfigure it to obtain a
bounded-degree expander graph as efficiently as possible. The overlay
construction problem is relevant to building real-world peer-to-peer network
topologies that have desirable properties such as low diameter, high
conductance, robustness to adversarial deletions, etc.
Our main result is that we show that starting from any arbitrary (connected)
graph on nodes and edges, we can construct an overlay network that
is a constant-degree expander in polylog rounds using only
messages. Our time and message bounds are both essentially optimal (up to
polylogarithmic factors). Our distributed overlay construction protocol is very
lightweight as it uses gossip (each node communicates with only one neighbor in
each round) and also scalable as it uses only messages, which is
sublinear in (even when is moderately dense). To the best of our
knowledge, this is the first result that achieves overlay network construction
in polylog rounds and messages. Our protocol uses graph sketches in
a novel way to construct an expander overlay that is both time and
communication efficient. A consequence of our overlay construction protocol is

Is Schr\"{o}dinger's Conjecture for the Hydrogen Atom Coherent States Attainable
We construct the most general SO(4,2) hydrogen atom coherent states which are
the counterpart of Schr\"{o}dinger's harmonic oscillator coherent states. We
show that these states cannot be localized and cannot follow the classical
orbits. Thus, Schr\"{o}dinger's conjecture for the hydrogen atom coherent

Urinary estrogen metabolites and long-term mortality following breast cancer
Background: Estrogen metabolite concentrations of 2-hydroxyestrone (2-OHE1) and 16-hydroxyestrone (16-OHE1) may be associated with breast carcinogenesis. However, no study has investigated their possible impact on mortality after breast cancer. Methods: This population-based study was initiated in 1996–1997 with spot urine samples obtained shortly after diagnosis (mean ¼ 96 days) from 683 women newly diagnosed with first primary breast cancer and 434 age-matched women without breast cancer. We measured urinary concentrations of 2-OHE1 and 16-OHE1 using an enzyme-linked immunoassay. Vital status was determined via the National Death Index (n ¼ 244 deaths after a median of 17.7 years of follow-up). We used multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the estrogen metabolites-mortality association. We evaluated effect modification using likelihood ratio tests. All statistical tests were two-sided. Results: Urinary concentrations of the 2-OHE1 to 16-OHE1 ratio (>median of 1.8 vs <median) were inversely associated with all-cause mortality (HR ¼ 0.74, 95% CI ¼ 0.56 to 0.98) among women with breast cancer. Reduced hazard was also observed for breast cancer mortality (HR ¼ 0.73, 95% CI ¼ 0.45 to 1.17) and cardiovascular diseases mortality (HR ¼ 0.76, 95% CI ¼ 0.47 to 1.23), although the 95% confidence intervals included the null. Similar findings were also observed for women without breast cancer. The association with all-cause mortality was more pronounced among breast cancer participants who began chemotherapy before urine collection (n ¼ 118, HR ¼ 0.42, 95% CI ¼ 0.22 to 0.81) than among those who had not (n ¼ 559, HR ¼ 0.98, 95% CI ¼ 0.72 to 1.34; Pinteraction ¼ .008). Conclusions: The urinary 2-OHE1 to 16-OHE1 ratio may be inversely associated with long-term all-cause mortality, which may depend on cancer treatment status at the time of urine collection
Aldose reductase deficiency in mice protects from ragweed pollen extract (RWE)-induced allergic asthma
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Childhood hospitalization related to asthma remains at historically high levels, and its incidence is on the rise world-wide. Previously, we have demonstrated that aldose reductase (AR), a regulatory enzyme of polyol pathway, is a major mediator of allergen-induced asthma pathogenesis in mouse models. Here, using AR null (AR<sup>-/-</sup>) mice we have investigated the effect of AR deficiency on the pathogenesis of ragweed pollen extract (RWE)-induced allergic asthma in mice and also examined the efficacy of enteral administration of highly specific AR inhibitor, fidarestat.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The wild type (WT) and AR<sup>-/- </sup>mice were sensitized and challenged with RWE to induce allergic asthma. AR inhibitor, fidarestat was administered orally. Airway hyper-responsiveness was measured in unrestrained animals using whole body plethysmography. Mucin levels and Th2 cytokine in broncho-alveolar lavage (BAL) were determined using mouse anti-Muc5A/C ELISA kit and multiplex cytokine array, respectively. Eosinophils infiltration and goblet cells were assessed by H&E and periodic acid Schiff (PAS)-staining of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded lung sections. T regulatory cells were assessed in spleen derived CD4<sup>+</sup>CD25<sup>+ </sup>T cells population.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Deficiency of AR in mice led to significantly decreased PENH, a marker of airway hyper-responsiveness, metaplasia of airway epithelial cells and mucus hyper-secretion following RWE-challenge. This was accompanied by a dramatic decrease in infiltration of eosinophils into sub-epithelium of lung as well as in BAL and release of Th2 cytokines in response to RWE-challenge of AR<sup>-/- </sup>mice. Further, enteral administration of fidarestat significantly prevented eosinophils infiltration, airway hyper-responsiveness and also markedly increased population of T regulatory (CD4<sup>+</sup>CD25<sup>+</sup>FoxP3<sup>+</sup>) cells as compared to RWE-sensitized and challenged mice not treated with fidarestat.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our results using AR<sup>-/- </sup>mice strongly suggest the role of AR in allergic asthma pathogenesis and effectiveness of oral administration of AR inhibitor in RWE-induced asthma in mice supports the use of AR inhibitors in the treatment of allergic asthma.</p
ADARRI:a novel method to detect spurious R-peaks in the electrocardiogram for heart rate variability analysis in the intensive care unit
We developed a simple and fully automated method for detecting artifacts in the R-R interval (RRI) time series of the ECG that is tailored to the intensive care unit (ICU) setting. From ECG recordings of 50 adult ICU-subjects we selected 60 epochs with valid R-peak detections and 60 epochs containing artifacts leading to missed or false positive R-peak detections. Next, we calculated the absolute value of the difference between two adjacent RRIs (adRRI), and obtained the empirical probability distributions of adRRI values for valid R-peaks and artifacts. From these, we calculated an optimal threshold for separating adRRI values arising from artifact versus non-artefactual data. We compared the performance of our method with the methods of Berntson and Clifford on the same data. We identified 257,458 R-peak detections, of which 235,644 (91.5%) were true detections and 21,814 (8.5%) arose from artifacts. Our method showed superior performance for detecting artifacts with sensitivity 100%, specificity 99%, precision 99%, positive likelihood ratio of 100 and negative likelihood ratio <0.001 compared to Berntson’s and Clifford’s method with a sensitivity, specificity, precision and positive and negative likelihood ratio of 99%, 78%, 82%, 4.5, 0.013 for Berntson’s method and 55%, 98%, 96%, 27.5, 0.460 for Clifford’s method, respectively. A novel algorithm using a patient-independent threshold derived from the distribution of adRRI values in ICU ECG data identifies artifacts accurately, and outperforms two other methods in common use. Furthermore, the threshold was calculated based on real data from critically ill patients and the algorithm is easy to implement
