    Nonlinearities in Stock Returns for Some Recent Entrants to the EU

    In this paper we use nonlinear tests to investigate the mean reverting properties of stock returns in a group of CEE markets. We also test whether returns in our target group of countries demonstrate characteristics of persistence and cross sectional dependence. Our results indicate that all series’ are stationary, but we find some ambiguity in the results of our tests for cross sectional dependence.nonlinearities, stock markets, Central and Eastern European Countries

    Effect of mixing, concentration and temperature on the formation of mesostructured solutions and their role in the nucleation of DL-valine crystals

    We report investigations on the formation of mesostructured solutions in DL-valine-water-2-propanol mixtures, and the crystallization of DL-valine from these solutions. Mesostructured liquid phases, similar to those previously observed in aqueous solutions of glycine and DL-alanine, were observed using Dynamic Light Scattering and Brownian microscopy, in both undersaturated and supersaturated solutions below a certain transition temperature. Careful experimentation was used to demonstrate that the optically clear mesostructured liquid phase, comprising colloidal mesoscale clusters dispersed within bulk solution, is thermodynamically stable and present in equilibrium with the solid phase at saturation conditions. Solutions prepared by slow cooling contained mesoscale clusters with a narrow size distribution and a mean hydrodynamic diameter of around 200 nm. Solutions of identical composition prepared by rapid isothermal mixing of valine aqueous solutions with 2-propanol contained mesoscale clusters which were significantly larger than those observed in slowly cooled solutions. The presence of larger mesoscale clusters was found to correspond to faster nucleation. Observed induction times were strongly dependent on the rapid initial mixing step, although solutions were left undisturbed afterwards and the induction times observed were up to two orders of magnitude longer than the initial mixing period. We propose that mesoscale clusters above a certain critical size are likely to be the location of productive nucleation events

    Regional collective learning processes, innovation and growth of high technology SMEs: The case of the Cambridge region

    Recent theoretical research on the technological development of dynamic European regions has drawn attention to the supposedly key role of "untraded interdependencies" between local firms and other organisations (Storper, 1995), involving informal inter-firm networking (Yeung, 1994) and processes of "collective learning" (Camagni, 1991, Lorenz, 1992). These processes, which involve exchange and development of technological expertise, are seen as being based on relationships of trust and reciprocity, while the networks and processes themselves are viewed as influential in the recent evolution of dynamic regional clusters of innovative small and medium sized enterprises. The paper will attempt to assess the extent, importance and nature of collective learning processes in the specific caseof technology-intensive firms in the Cambridge region recenty descried as the "nearest thing in Europe to Silicon Valley" (Martin 1996). Based on an original interview survey of technology-based enterprises, the paper will asses the role of technology firm spin-off and acquistion, inter-firm research and technology collaboration, and scientific and professional labour market recruitment, in the development of local technological competencies and collective learning capabilities. Alltention will also be paid to the role of key local instiutions and supporting business services in this regard. The paper will conclude by condsidering implications for policy.

    Formation of valine microcrystals through rapid antisolvent precipitation

    In this work we have experimentally studied concentration effects on antisolvent precipitation of valine (an amino acid) from aqueous isopropanol solutions. Our experiments showed that the valine precipitation is very sensitive to both the supersaturation and to the water content in the final solution. Results from spectrophotometric measurements and supersaturation analysis showed that the crystal formation kinetics are strongly dependent on both mixing and concentration profiles in the early stages of the process, even though no visible change in the systems occurs immediately upon mixing with the antisolvent or subsequent dilution. Results from small-angle static light scattering measurements showed that the first visible crystals are of micron size and they grow only little over time, while their number increases gradually. Taken together, these experiments point to intermediate phase separation of (possible amorphous) precursors, being either very small nanoparticles or droplets with their refractive index closely matching that of the continuous phase, which subsequently assemble into micron size valine crystals

    Management’s place within social work has long been of concern. Social workers are being displaced as managers due to competition from other professions, poor regard for their skills as managers, declining student interest, and weak graduate training. This article examines the displacement, discussing its impact on organizational mission, values, and culture; social work’s future; graduates’ readiness to take on management tasks; and career and compensation advancement. These concerns motivated the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis to implement a requirement that master of social work students complete three credits of concentration-level management coursework. We explore this change and others in a case that provides directions forward for training social workers as managers

    The Application of Industry Standards as an Alternative to in-House Proprietary Standards Within the AEC iIndustry

    The move from traditional 2D Computer Aided Design (CAD) practices towards Building Information Modelling (BIM) has witnessed some practices trying to adopt and update their own in-house CAD standards. These standards are wholly inadequate for working in a collaborative BIM environment and mean that they repetitively create and recreate local, non-reusable, non-interoperable solutions to the same problems, which leads to the employees potentially having to learn a new collaborative process every time they have to work with a new project team. Collaborative standards help teams produce information through a standardised process, so as to ensure the same form and quality to enable information to be used and reused without change or interpretation. These standards permit common ways of creating, storing, and accessing, exchanging and communicating built asset information. This allows the supply chain to organise itself around defined roles and further permits diverse project teams to have a mutual understanding and trust with each other. This can therefore result in improvement across the board that include better teamwork, better scheduling, better risk management and better costs control. This paper will present the case for companies to move from existing in-house CAD Standards towards more rewarding collaborative Industry standards. The data collation methodology included an in-depth questionnaire that investigated the practice of using inhouse standards. The results have indicated that a more robust direction is to adopt an industry standard in order to ensure a more rewarding BIM proces
