    Scholarly Communication and Data

The purpose of this chapter is to provide foundational knowledge for the data librarian by developing an understanding of the place of data within the current paradigm of networked digital scholarly communication. This includes defining the nature of data and data publications, examining the open science movement and its effects on data sharing, and delving into the challenges inherent to the wider integration of data into the scholarly communication system and the academic library.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/120919/1/ScholCommData_Mooney_Databrarianship_Chapter13.pdfDescription of ScholCommData_Mooney_Databrarianship_Chapter13.pdf : Book chapter: Scholarly communication and dat

The Benefits of Sleep During Hospitalization: A Survey to Determine the Utility of Quiet Hours on a Med-Surg Floor

    Get PDF
Florence Nightingale said, “Unnecessary noise is the cruelest absence of care.” During inpatient hospitalizations, frequent awakenings and a high level of ambient noise prevent restful sleep in many patients. Awakenings are inevitable for the health and safety of patients; however, many hospitals have improved patient sleep quality by implementing 2-3 hour periods devoted to patient rest. These periods, called “quiet hours,” are a specified time during which noise levels are restricted and non-urgent interruptions are prohibited. The purpose of this study was to determine the utility of “quiet hours” on a med-surg floor. During a four-week period, patients hospitalized for at least one night on the med-surg floor of a local hospital were surveyed regarding their sleep quality. These results, coupled with research on the benefits of sleep, were presented to the nurse manager of the floor. Using these results, as well as the results of the hospital’s most recent HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems), the utility of “quiet hours” could be weighed against the challenges

Developing Data Literacies for Graduate Students in the Social Sciences

    Get PDF
What competencies in working with data do graduate students in the Social Sciences need to acquire before they graduate? What roles can librarians and other information professionals play in teaching these competencies to graduate students? This paper will report on preliminary findings from an investigation into the data management competencies and skill gaps of graduate students in the social sciences. Building from the work of the Data Information Literacy (DIL) project (http://datainfolit.org), this study uses an interview-based approach to discern how competencies in working with data are understood and valued by graduate students and their faculty advisors. The DIL project identified and employed 12 data competencies as starting points for interviews and for developing educational programming on data literacies for graduate students. As the original DIL project focused on students in five different STEM fields, this extended study into the social sciences (DIL-SS) will allow for comparisons of perceptions and practices between these disciplines. In addition, DIL-SS presents an opportunity to further develop the 12 DIL competencies and test their relevance to educational needs in the social sciences. Our findings will inform the work of librarians and others involved in offering data management education and consulting services in academic settings

“Fake News” and the Sociological Imagination: Theory Informs Practice

    Get PDF
The disordered information environment that fostered “fake news” in the 2016 U.S. election is still here. We need the social justice paradigm offered by critical information literacy to meet higher-order learning goals such as the creation of informed citizens. Sociology originated critical theory; therefore, applying the sociological imagination to information literacy practice provides valuable insights that can impact our day-to-day instruction in a way that meaningfully integrates a critical perspective. Attendees will be invited to practice the sociological imagination and consider how a social problems approach to information seeking and evaluation can impact their own information literacy instruction.https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/143532/1/LOEX2018_MooneyFakeNewsSocImagination_vFinalDeepBlue.pdfDescription of LOEX2018_MooneyFakeNewsSocImagination_vFinalDeepBlue.pdf : Conference proceedings paper preprin

This poster will examine the issue of “fake news” and the need to teach undergraduate students critical thinking skills in information evaluation. It will demonstrate how librarians can partner with educators to provide students with information literacy instruction. The goal of this poster is to serve as an informational resource and discussion starter for integrating source evaluation into undergraduate sociology courses and sparking collaborations between instructors and librarians.https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/138001/1/ASA2017_FakeNewsInfoLit_Poster_final.pdfDescription of ASA2017_FakeNewsInfoLit_Poster_final.pdf : Poster Presentatio

Documentation in the Middle: Active Phase Project Documentation for Inclusive and Effective Team-Based Research

    Get PDF
Documentation is an essential component of good data management and yet data service providers often struggle to provide effective support to researchers. There are materials available for creating or assisting researchers with documentation at the beginning and end of a project; from data management plans to documenting data for archival purposes. However, we don’t yet have a solid understanding of how research teams incorporate (or not) documentation into their everyday work. This poster reports on a project to investigate, analyze, and synthesize real and ideal documentation practices within research teams in order to develop a universal project manual documentation template. It is our contention that a “lab manual” or “project organization protocol” will enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of research teams, while creating an inclusive environment by making local practices and expectations clear to all team members regardless of previous research experience and disciplinary background. The goal of this project is to identify the basic considerations that any researcher from any discipline should consider for their local documentation in support of team-based research projects.https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/137704/1/Documentation in the Middle.pdf-1Description of Documentation in the Middle.pdf : 2017 IASSIST Poste
