    Pro-brain natriuretic peptide as predictive factor for cardiovascular abnormalities in children with incomplete Kawasaki disease in emergency department

    Purpose The prevalence of incomplete Kawasaki disease (KD) is progressively increasing. The purpose of our study is to investigate the usefulness of pro-brain natriuretic peptide (pro-BNP) assay as a predictive biochemical marker of cardiovascular abnormality in children with incomplete KD. Methods We retrospectively reviewed medical records of patients under 15 years of age with incomplete KD in the pediatric emergency department (PED) of Soonchunhyang University Cheonan Hospital from January 2010 to December 2014. Incomplete KD was diagnosed in 132 children, including 67 boys and 65 girls, aged 2 to 83 months (mean, 24.9 months). We assessed the risk of cardiovascular abnormality in relation to age, gender, duration of fever, symptoms, and laboratory data. Results The distribution of epidemiologic characters, laboratory findings except platelet counts, and pro-BNP in the patient group without cardiovascular abnormality absent group did not significantly differ from those of the patient group with cardiovascular abnormality group. However, in the latter group with cardiovascular abnormality, serum platelet counts were significantly lower and concentration of pro-BNP levels were significantly higher. Conclusion Pro-BNP might be a useful and important value for predicting cardiovascular abnormality in incomplete KD at PED. Therefore, incomplete KD patients with high concentraton of pro-BNP need further evaluation for cardiovascular abnormality

    Continuous testing of silica-PEI adsorbents in a lab.-scale twin bubbling fluidized-bed system

    In this study, a lab.-scale twin bubbling fluidized-bed system (TBS) has been used continuously to test the performance for CO2 adsorption of silica-PEI (S.PEI) adsorbents, containing 40 wt.% of PEI, which were supplied by the University of Nottingham (UNOTT). The TBS comprises bubbling-bed adsorption and desorption reactors, a riser for pneumatic conveying of solids from the adsorption to the desorption reactor, and a cyclone for solid-gas separation. The adsorbent prepared using PEI with a molecular mass of 800 (S.PEI-0.8K) was a preliminarily tested for almost 24 h at the given operating conditions by varying the inlet sorbent/CO2 mass ratio at the adsorber to analyse the CO2 removal efficiency in the adsorption reactor and the dynamic sorption capacity of the adsorbent. A 180-h continuous test was then carried out by changing various experimental conditions such as the H2O concentration, reaction temperature, solid layer height, reaction gas flow rate, and inlet sorbent/CO2 mass ratio at the adsorber using PEI with a molecular mass of 5000 (S.PEI-5K) adsorbent. In this test, a CO2 removal efficiency of above 80% and a dynamic sorption capacity greater than 6.0 wt.% were achieved

    Clinical Outcomes and Prognostic Factors of Up-Front Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation in Patients with Extranodal Natural Killer/T Cell Lymphoma

    AbstractLimited data exist on up-front autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) in extranodal natural killer/T cell lymphoma (ENKTL). Sixty-two patients (43 men and 19 women) with newly diagnosed ENKTL who underwent up-front ASCT after primary therapy were identified. Poor-risk characteristics included advanced stage (50%), high-intermediate to high-risk International Prognostic Index (25.8%), and group 3 to 4 of NK/T Cell Lymphoma Prognostic Index (NKPI, 67.7%). Pretransplant responses included complete remission in 61.3% and partial remission in 38.7% of patients, and final post-transplantation response included complete remission in 78.3%. Early progression occurred in 12.9%. At a median follow-up of 43.3 months (range, 3.7 to 114.6), 3-year progression-free survival (PFS) was 52.4% and 3-year overall survival (OS) was 60.0%. Patients with limited disease had significantly better 3-year PFS (64.5% versus 40.1%, P = .017) and OS (67.6% versus 52.3%, P = .048) than those with advanced disease. Multivariate analysis showed NKPI and pretransplant response were independent prognostic factors influencing survival, particularly NKPI in limited disease and pretransplant response in advanced disease. Radiotherapy was an independent factor for reduced progression and survival in patients with limited disease, but anthracycline-based chemotherapy was a poor prognostic factor for progression in patients with advanced disease. Up-front ASCT is an active treatment in ENKTL patients responding to primary therapy

    Atomically thin three-dimensional membranes of van der Waals semiconductors by wafer-scale growth

    We report wafer-scale growth of atomically thin, three-dimensional (3D) van der Waals (vdW) semiconductor membranes. By controlling the growth kinetics in the near-equilibrium limit during metal-organic chemical vapor depositions of MoS2 and WS2 monolayer (ML) crystals, we have achieved conformal ML coverage on diverse 3D texture substrates, such as periodic arrays of nanoscale needles and trenches on quartz and SiO2/Si substrates. The ML semiconductor properties, such as channel resistivity and photoluminescence, are verified to be seamlessly uniform over the 3D textures and are scalable to wafer scale. In addition, we demonstrated that these 3D films can be easily delaminated from the growth substrates to form suspended 3D semiconductor membranes. Our work suggests that vdW ML semiconductor films can be useful platforms for patchable membrane electronics with atomic precision, yet large areas, on arbitrary substrates.11Ysciescopu

    Amifostine ameliorates recognition memory defect in acute radiation syndrome caused by relatively low-dose of gamma radiation

    This study examined whether amifostine (WR-2721) could attenuate memory impairment and suppress hippocampal neurogenesis in adult mice with the relatively low-dose exposure of acute radiation syndrome (ARS). These were assessed using object recognition memory test, the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end-labeling assay, and immunohistochemical markers of neurogenesis [Ki-67 and doublecortin (DCX)]. Amifostine treatment (214 mg/kg, i.p.) prior to irradiation significantly attenuated the recognition memory defect in ARS, and markedly blocked the apoptotic death and decrease of Ki-67- and DCX-positive cells in ARS. Therefore, amifostine may attenuate recognition memory defect in a relatively low-dose exposure of ARS in adult mice, possibly by inhibiting a detrimental effect of irradiation on hippocampal neurogenesis

    Large two-level magnetoresistance effect in doped manganite grain boundary junctions

    We performed a systematic analysis of the tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) effect in single grain boundary junctions formed in epitaxial La(2/3)Ca(1/3)MnO(3) films deposited on SrTiO(3) bicrystals. For magnetic fields H applied parallel to the grain boundary barrier, an ideal two-level resistance switching behavior with sharp transitions is observed with a TMR effect of up to 300% at 4.2 K and still above 100% at 77 K. Varying the angle between H and the grain boundary results in differently shaped resistance vs H curves.     No difference in stroke knowledge between Korean adherents to traditional and western medicine – the AGE study: an epidemiological study

    BACKGROUND: Effective stroke intervention and risk reduction depend on the general public's awareness and knowledge of stroke. In Korea, where both traditional Oriental medicine and Western medicine are practiced, estimates of the general public's awareness and knowledge of stroke are poor. The present study sought to describe the inception cohort of the Ansan Geriatric Study (AGE study) and to determine baseline stroke awareness and preferred medical treatment for stroke in this Korean sample. METHODS: A total of 2,767 subjects selected randomly from the Ansan Geriatric Study in South Korea were questioned about stroke. Their answers were compared with their sociodemographic data and other variables. RESULTS: Only 44.8% of participants correctly identified stroke as a vascular disease in the human brain. Sudden numbness or weakness was the most frequently identified stroke warning sign (60.2%). Hypertension (66.7%) and mental stress (62.2%) were most frequently identified as stroke risk factors. The contributions of diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease to stroke were underestimated; they were identified as risk factors by 28.3% and 18.6% of participants, respectively. The predictors for poor knowledge of stroke warning signs and risk factors were similar irrespective of preference for Western or Oriental medical treatment, and included those with lower levels of education and inaccurate definition of stroke. Television and radio (40.3%) were the most frequent sources of stroke information for both groups. CONCLUSION: This study shows that knowledge of stroke is similar among Koreans with preferences for either Western or Oriental medical treatment and that misunderstandings about stroke are common among the Korean elderly. In order to prevent and manage stroke effectively, public health education regarding basic concepts of stroke is necessary. This should target those with a lower level of education and a misunderstanding of the definition of stroke

    Thermoelectric materials by using two-dimensional materials with negative correlation between electrical and thermal conductivity

    In general, in thermoelectric materials the electrical conductivity σ and thermal conductivity κ are related and thus cannot be controlled independently. Previously, to maximize the thermoelectric figure of merit in state-of-the-art materials, differences in relative scaling between σ and κ as dimensions are reduced to approach the nanoscale were utilized. Here we present an approach to thermoelectric materials using tin disulfide, SnS2, nanosheets that demonstrated a negative correlation between σ and κ. In other words, as the thickness of SnS2 decreased, σ increased whereas κ decreased. This approach leads to a thermoelectric figure of merit increase to 0.13 at 300 K, a factor ~1,000 times greater than previously reported bulk single-crystal SnS2. The Seebeck coefficient obtained for our two-dimensional SnS2 nanosheets was 34.7 mV K-1 for 16-nm-thick samples at 300 K.1

    Morbidity and related factors among elderly people in South Korea: results from the Ansan Geriatric (AGE) cohort study

    BACKGROUND: A thorough examination of the morbidity and comorbidity profiles among the elderly and an evaluation of the related factors are required to improve the delivery of health care to the elderly and to estimate the cost of that care. In South Korea where the aged population is rapidly increasing, however, to date only one study using a limited sample (84 subjects) has provided information on morbidity and related factors among the elderly. Using a large, stratified, random sample (2,767 subjects) from the population-based Ansan Geriatric study, the present study sought to assess the morbidity and comorbidity, and to determine the relationships of these variables with sociodemographic and health characteristics in elderly people in South Korea. METHODS: A total of 2,767 subjects (1,215 men and 1,552 women) aged 60–84 years were randomly selected from September 2002 to August 2003 in Ansan, South Korea. Data on sociodemographic and health characteristics, and clinical diagnosis were collected using questionnaires. When available, the medical records and medications taken by the subjects were also cross-checked. RESULTS: Of the total subjects, 78.0% reported diagnosed disease, 11.0% had been cured, and 46.8% had been diagnosed with more than two diseases. The mean number of morbidities per person among elderly Koreans was 1.62 ± 1.35 (mean ± standard deviation), and women had a greater number of diseases per person than did men. The most common morbidities were chronic diseases such as hypertension, arthritis, and diabetes mellitus. In women, osteoporosis and arthritis were the second and third most prevalent diseases, respectively. Morbidity was significantly associated with gender, employment, household income, alcohol intake, self-assessed health status, and worries about health. CONCLUSION: These data will enhance understanding of the patterns of health problems among elderly Koreans and will contribute to the application of appropriate intervention strategies
