Conformational studies of various hemoglobins by natural-abundance 13C NMR spectroscopy
Studies of variously liganded hemoglobins (both from human and rabbit) by natural-abundance 13C NMR spectroscopy have revealed apparent conformational differences that have been interpreted on the basis of two quaternary structures for the α2ß2 tetramer, and variable tertiary structures for the individual α and ß subunits. In solution, rabbit hemoglobins appear to have somewhat more flexibility than human hemoglobins
The structure of sheared turbulence near a plane boundary
An analysis is presented of how a plane boundary affects the structure of turbulence in a sheared free stream. A uniform-shear boundary layer (USBL) is formulated with slip velocity condition at the surface, and inhomogeneous rapid distortion theory is applied. The effects of blocking by the surface on the turbulence structure in USBL is compared with those in the shear-free boundary layer (SFBL). Shear produces highly anisotropic eddies elongated in the flow direction. The vertical velocity variance is reduced with shear at all heights, roughly in proportion to the reduction in the homogeneous value, but the shape of the profile remains unchanged only near the surface. The streamwise integral scales increase with shear, indicating elongation of the streamwise extent of eddies

Wheat cultivar performance tests are conducted each year in Arkansas by the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture’s Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station, Department of Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences. The tests provide information to companies developing cultivars and marketing seed within the state and aid the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service in formulating cultivar recommendations for small-grain producers

Wheat cultivar performance tests are conducted each year in Ark- ansas by the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture’s Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station, Department of Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences. The tests provide information to companies developing cultivars and marketing seed within the state and aid the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service in formulating cultivar recommendations for small-grain producers. The tests are conducted at the Northeast Research and Extension Center at Keiser, the Vegetable Substation near Kibler, the Lon Mann Cotton Research Station near Marianna, the Newport Extension Center near Newport, the Rohwer Research Station near Rohwer, the Pine Tree Research Station near Colt, and the Hope Research and Extension Center. In addition, entries are evaluated in a stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis f.sp. tritici) inoculated nursery in Fayetteville and a Fusarium head blight (FHB) inoculated nursery in Newport and Fayetteville. Compaction and dilation rate dependence of stresses in gas-fluidized beds
A particle dynamics-based hybrid model, consisting of monodisperse spherical
solid particles and volume-averaged gas hydrodynamics, is used to study
traveling planar waves (one-dimensional traveling waves) of voids formed in
gas-fluidized beds of narrow cross sectional areas. Through ensemble-averaging
in a co-traveling frame, we compute solid phase continuum variables (local
volume fraction, average velocity, stress tensor, and granular temperature)
across the waves, and examine the relations among them. We probe the
consistency between such computationally obtained relations and constitutive
models in the kinetic theory for granular materials which are widely used in
the two-fluid modeling approach to fluidized beds. We demonstrate that solid
phase continuum variables exhibit appreciable ``path dependence'', which is not
captured by the commonly used kinetic theory-based models. We show that this
path dependence is associated with the large rates of dilation and compaction
that occur in the wave. We also examine the relations among solid phase
continuum variables in beds of cohesive particles, which yield the same path
dependence. Our results both for beds of cohesive and non-cohesive particles
suggest that path-dependent constitutive models need to be developed.Comment: accepted for publication in Physics of Fluids (Burnett-order effect

Image patch analysis and clustering of sunspots: a dimensionality reduction approach
Sunspots, as seen in white light or continuum images, are associated with
regions of high magnetic activity on the Sun, visible on magnetogram images.
Their complexity is correlated with explosive solar activity and so classifying
these active regions is useful for predicting future solar activity. Current
classification of sunspot groups is visually based and suffers from bias.
Supervised learning methods can reduce human bias but fail to optimally
capitalize on the information present in sunspot images. This paper uses two
image modalities (continuum and magnetogram) to characterize the spatial and
modal interactions of sunspot and magnetic active region images and presents a
new approach to cluster the images. Specifically, in the framework of image
patch analysis, we estimate the number of intrinsic parameters required to
describe the spatial and modal dependencies, the correlation between the two
modalities and the corresponding spatial patterns, and examine the phenomena at
different scales within the images. To do this, we use linear and nonlinear
intrinsic dimension estimators, canonical correlation analysis, and

Bantam System Technology Project Ground System Requirements Document
The Low Cost Booster Project (LCBP), also known as Bantam, is an element of the Advanced Space Transportation Program focused on Low Cost Booster Technologies. During FY 99 flight demonstrations are planned to demonstrate the feasibility of producing a booster capable of inserting a 150 kg payload into low earth orbit. The ground support system is an element of the full launch system. The ground support system provides for integration of the payload with the launch vehicle, preparation of the vehicle for launch (including maintenance, integration and test of the vehicle flight software), monitor and control of the launch sequence, range safety during launch, and collection of telemetry during the flight up to payload release. The ground support system is intended to make the maximum possible use of Government Off-the-Shelf (GOTS) or Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) hardware and software to obtain the best value in terms of development operations support and ultimate life cycle cost for the launch system
Bantam System Technology Project
This report focuses on determining a best value, low risk, low cost and highly reliable Data and Command System for support of the launch of low cost vehicles which are to carry small payloads into low earth orbit. The ground-based DCS is considered as a component of the overall ground and flight support system which includes the DCS, flight computer, mission planning system and simulator. Interfaces between the DCS and these other component systems are considered. Consideration is also given to the operational aspects of the mission and of the DCS selected. This project involved: defining requirements, defining an efficient operations concept, defining a DCS architecture which satisfies the requirements and concept, conducting a market survey of commercial and government off-the-shelf DCS candidate systems and rating the candidate systems against the requirements/concept. The primary conclusions are that several low cost, off-the-shelf DCS solutions exist and these can be employed to provide for very low cost operations and low recurring maintenance cost. The primary recommendation is that the DCS design/specification should be integrated within the ground and flight support system design as early as possible to ensure ease of interoperability and efficient allocation of automation functions among the component systems
