    Limit-(quasi)periodic point sets as quasicrystals with p-adic internal spaces

    Model sets (or cut and project sets) provide a familiar and commonly used method of constructing and studying nonperiodic point sets. Here we extend this method to situations where the internal spaces are no longer Euclidean, but instead spaces with p-adic topologies or even with mixed Euclidean/p-adic topologies. We show that a number of well known tilings precisely fit this form, including the chair tiling and the Robinson square tilings. Thus the scope of the cut and project formalism is considerably larger than is usually supposed.     The NASA exoplanet exploration program is dedicated to developing technologies for detecting and characterizing extrasolar planets. In support of that program we have evaluated three different coronagraphic techniques (bandlimited Lyot, optical vortex, and phase-induced pupil apodization) using optical propagation simulations. These utilized a complete hypothetical telescope+coronagraph system with phase and amplitude aberrations. Wavefront control using dual sequential deformable mirrors was performed.     Diffractive point sets with entropy

    After a brief historical survey, the paper introduces the notion of entropic model sets (cut and project sets), and, more generally, the notion of diffractive point sets with entropy. Such sets may be thought of as generalizations of lattice gases. We show that taking the site occupation of a model set stochastically results, with probabilistic certainty, in well-defined diffractive properties augmented by a constant diffuse background. We discuss both the case of independent, but identically distributed (i.i.d.) random variables and that of independent, but different (i.e., site dependent) random variables.     Conditional activation of Neu in the mammary epithelium of transgenic mice results in reversible pulmonary metastasis

    AbstractTo determine the impact of tumor progression on the reversibility of Neu-induced tumorigenesis, we have used the tetracycline regulatory system to conditionally express activated Neu in the mammary epithelium of transgenic mice. When induced with doxycycline, bitransgenic MMTV-rtTA/TetO-NeuNT mice develop multiple invasive mammary carcinomas, essentially all of which regress to a clinically undetectable state following transgene deinduction. This demonstrates that Neu-initiated tumorigenesis is reversible. Strikingly, extensive lung metastases arising from Neu-induced mammary tumors also rapidly and fully regress following the abrogation of Neu expression. However, despite the near universal dependence of both primary tumors and metastases on Neu transgene expression, most animals bearing fully regressed Neu-induced tumors ultimately develop recurrent tumors that have progressed to a Neu-independent state
