    The Photometric and Kinematic Structure of Face-On Disk Galaxies. I. Sample Definition, H-alpha Integral Field Spectroscopy, and HI Line-Widths

    We present a survey of the photometric and kinematic properties of 39 nearby, nearly face-on disk galaxies. Our approach exploits echelle-resolution integral-field spectroscopy of the H-alpha regions, obtained with DensePak on the WIYN 3.5m telescope Bench Spectrograph. This data is complemented by HI line-profiles observed with the Nancay radio telescope for 25 of these sample galaxies. Twelve additional line-widths are available for sample galaxies from the literature. In this paper, we introduce the goals of this survey, define the sample selection algorithm, and amass the integral field spectroscopic data and HI line-widths. We establish spatially-integrated H-alpha line-widths for the sample. We test the veracity of these spatially-integrated line profiles by convolving narrow-band imaging data with velocity field information for one of the sample galaxies, PGC 38268, and also by comparing to HI line profiles. We find HI and H-alpha line profiles to be similar in width but different in shape, indicating we are observing different spatial distributions of ionized and neutral gas in largely axisymmetric systems with flat outer rotation-curves. We also find vertical velocity dispersions of the ionized disk gas within several disk scale-lengths have a median value of 18 km/s and an 80% range of 12-26 km/s. This is only a factor of ~2 larger than what is observed for neutral atomic and molecular gas. With standard assumptions for intrinsic and thermal broadening for H-alpha, this translates into a factor of three range in turbulent velocities, between 8 and 25 km/s.Comment: 29 pages, 20 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ Supplement Serie

    International audienceUsing both the Arecibo 305 m and the Nançay decimetric 100-m class radio telescopes, we have observed the H I line of 116 Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies from the Bothun et al. (1985) subset of LSB galaxies in the Uppsala General Catalog. The observations had a detection rate of 70%, resulting in the new determination of H I properties for 81 galaxies. Surprisingly, roughly half of the detected objects (38) have MHI >=1010 M&sun;, placing them into the category of massive LSB galaxies. As previously only ˜18 of these ``Malin 1 cousins'' were known, our results have more than tripled the number of these fascinating and enigmatic systems known.     International audienceA total of 334 Low Surface Brightness galaxies detected in the 2MASS all-sky near-infrared survey have been observed in the 21 cm H I line using the Nançay telescope. All have a Ks-band mean central surface brightness, measured within a 5'' radius, fainter than 18 mag arcsec-2 and a Ks-band isophotal radius at the 20 mag arcsec-2 level larger than 20''. We present global H I line parameters for the 171 clearly detected objects and the 23 marginal detections, as well as upper limits for the undetected objects. The 171 clear detections comprise 50 previously uncatalogued objects and 41 objects with a PGC entry only

    International audienceA sample of about 3800 Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies was selected using the all-sky near-infrared (J, H and Ks-band) 2MASS survey. The selected objects have a mean central surface brightness within a 5'' radius around their centre fainter than 18 mag arcsec-2 in the Ks band, making them the lowest surface brightness galaxies detected by 2MASS. A description is given of the relevant properties of the 2MASS survey and the LSB galaxy selection procedure, as well as of basic photometric properties of the selected objects. The latter properties are compared to those of other samples of galaxies, of both LSBs and ``classical'' high surface brightness (HSB) objects, which were selected in the optical. The 2MASS LSBs have a BT_c-KT colour which is on average 0.9 mag bluer than that of HSBs from the NGC. The 2MASS sample does not appear to contain a significant population of red objects

    A Study of 2MASS Low Surface Brightness Galaxies

    International audienceA study is being made of a sample of about 4,000 Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies detected in the 2MASS all-sky near-infrared survey. These objects have similar central K-band surface brighnesses as optically selected LSBs. About 1,000 of them were observed in HI, and one third of these were detected. BVRI CCD photometry was obtained of 65 objects. These multi-wavelength data provide us with important information on a large, homogenous sample of LSB galaxies (e.g., colors, gas content). They will be used to construct models of the star formation histories and evolution of LSBs, and for a study of their Tully-Fisher (TF) relation, particularly to search for deviations from the `classical' TF relation
