Determinants of Romanian International Migrants' Remittances

    Get PDF
In the past few years, there has been a renewed interest in remittances of international migrants, as their strong recent increase shed more light on the effects at both micro and macro level. The remittances not only contribute to the well-being of the receiving households, but are also a large source of external financing, second only to FDI. The remittances are particularly important for Romania as in 2010 it was on the 5th place in the European top of emigration countries and on the 4th place as remittance recipient country. Therefore the determinants of remittance behavior need to be better understood. Following increasing interest and significant public debate on migration in Romania, our paper examines the significance of selected economic and demographic factors associated with the remittance behavior of Romanian international migrants, as characterized by the propensity to remit and the amount remitted. In particular we address the question of the role played by the geographic distance, as potentially affecting the immigrants’ ties with their homeland and consequently the remittance decisions. Our present work builds on a recent source of data on immigrant cohort resulting from an online survey conducted during August-December 2010. Respondents were asked questions on a variety of topics including income, employment, remittances, regions of origin and destination, graduated studies both in Romania and in emigration country, length of migration and intention to return to Romania. The final database consisted of 1514 Romanian immigrants from 55 destination countries. We developed several multivariate models to study the determinants of remittances by employing regression analysis. Among the main findings is that the geographic distance is not related to the remittances. Although contrasting with the existing literature, this result can be explained by factors such as modern instant communication and fast travel supporting very strong and resilient transnational links despite geographic distance.

Due to the reduced toxicity in humans and livestock, and also because they does not develop strength to insects or let toxic residues, the use of vegetal insecticides is of great interest both from an economic and ecological point of view (Golob and contributors, 1999, Multon, 1988)

RESEARCH CONCERNING THE CHEMICAL CONTROL AGAINST PSEUDOCOCCUS ADONIDUM L.

Pseudococcus adonidum is a polyphag pest, which attacks different species of plants belonging to many genus and families, as: Citrus, Ficus, Cactaceae, Cycas, Dracena, Phoenix, Mimoza, Asparagus, Camellia etc. It is localized in large colonies on leaves, stems, branches, offshoots, and roots. The experiments were performed in solarium conditions during 2001-2002. Testing the efficiency of an insecticide sort was the aim of our experiment. During 2 experimental years, 9 products were tested: Confidor 200 SL, Calypso 400 SC; Pyrinex 25 EC, Vydate 10 G, Fastac 10 CE – RV, Sumithion 50 EC, Mospilan 20 SP, Decis 2,5 EC, Actellic 50 EC

LAW, ECONOMY AND IDEOLOGY IN THE WESTERN DEMOCRACIES TODAY: A TYPICAL CARROT AND STICK INTERACTION

    Get PDF
The official anti-Covid-19 policies and the backlash they sparked from a substantial portion of the population in both the EU and USA might be seen as part of a long series of events which highlight a growing polarization amongst the citizens of the Western democracies today, along ideological fault lines, regarding the extent of the executive powers, the individual freedoms versus the common good, the environmental protection versus the economic realities etc. In part, this polarization arises, in our opinion, from the unbalanced relationship between ideology, economy and law. The present paper endeavours to examine some facets of this relationship, presenting the current tensions between ideology, on one hand, and law and economy, on the other, as an example of a typical carrot and stick approach, which relegates the law to an ancillary, strictly technical role. To this purpose, several cases will be considered, such as the European Green Deal, the immigration (a common and hotly debated topic in the EU and USA today) and the anti-Covid vaccination policies. We will attempt to show that, far from being a mere avatar of a “stick” within the framework of the Western democracies, the law could and should offer solutions to the pervasive divisiveness in our society, by reevaluating concepts such as sovereignty and democratic representation, and in doing so, acting as a social glue, where economic incentives or ideological tenets are bound to fail

Influencia del riego con agua regenerada en el cultivo hidropónico de tomate bajo diferentes sustratos

    Get PDF

RESEARCHES CONCERNING IMPROVING METHODS OF IN VITRO MICROTUBERS PRODUCTION

Five genotypes of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) were induced to form microtubers under two in vitro culture conditions (continuos darkness and light). Cultures maintained under continuos darkness (with a temperatue of 170C) had a higher yield with a greater number of microtuber (1.394/plantlet) than those maintained under long days (16 h of light/day) combined with temperature of 200C. In the last case the microtubers were higher, with with the highest average weight of 0.602 g. Three phytohormones it was used: coumarine, benzylaminopurine and salicylic acid. Regarding the average number of microtubers obtained when it was used coumarine and salicylic acid, the highest average number of microtubers was recorded (1,135 microtubers/plantlet).  The study had been performed also on two fractions of the of sugar quantity (80 and 140 g/l), but they had less influence compared to the varieties

To Recall or Not to Recall a Flawed Product: Corporate Responses and Consumer Perceptions of Toy Recalls *

Examining parents' reactions to incidents involving toy defects, the authors find that corporate strategies of handling product problems influence consumer attitudes and purchase intentions, and beneficial effects of recalling a product can arise for firms, particularly when the product problem is minor and the company response is strong. This research emphasizes that product recalls can be viewed not only from the disaster-mitigation perspective of prior literature, but also as opportunities for companies to realize market benefits by engaging in responsible recall behavior, forging better relationships with customers. Additionally, the authors find that individuals' search for information following recall news is dependent on the product defect encountered
