L’illustration dans les abécédaires imprimés par les Deckherr à Porrentruy et Montbéliard (1810-1860)

Die Bibliothèque nationale de France verwahrt eine Serie von etwa 30 bebildeten ABC-Fibeln, die zwischen 1810 und 1860 von der Familie Deckherr in Porrentruy und Montbéliard gedruckt wurden. Diese nach einem alphabetischen Ordnungsschema strukturierten kleinen Textsammlungen stammten aus der Werkstatt von Professionellen volkstümlicher Drucke (Bildgeschichten, Almanache, Kolportageliteratur). Sie reichten von einfachen Gebetsammlungen mit religiösen Bildmotiven zu thematischen Bandchen über Kunst und Handwerk, Naturgeschichte oder Heiligenleben. Letztere bildeten kleine Enzyklopadien, denen eine Reihe von Bildtafeln hinzugefügt wurde. Die innere Logik im Aufbau der ABC-Fibeln und der Zwang einer preiswerten Fertigung führten zu einem eigentümlichen Einsatz des Holzschnitts. Hinter einem augenscheinlichen Mangel an Stringenz in der ikonographischen und stilistischen Darstellung verbirgt sich ein komplexes System wechselseitiger Verweise und Verbindungen zwischen Text und Bild.The Bibliothèque nationale de France holds a collection of some thirty illustrated spelling-books printed by the Deckherr family at Porrentruy and Montbéliard from ca. 1810 to 1860. Produced by printers specialising in popular works such as picture sheets, almanacs, and chap-books, these alphabets range from elementary prayer books adorned each with a single devotional picture to thematic alphabets of arts and crafts, natural history, or saints' lives, designed as small dictionaries illustrated with series of inset plates. The necessities of cheap printing, together with the particular logic of spelling-books as such, led to developing an original way of using woodcuts. Despite apparent carelessness (lack of stylistic unity, use of incongruous pictures), a complex system regulates the various ways in which picture and text are meant to interact.La Bibliothèque nationale de France conserve une trentaine d'abécédaires illustrés imprimés par la famille Deckherr à Porrentruy et à Montbéliard de 1810 à 1860 environ. Produits par des spécialistes de l'édition populaire (imagerie, almanachs, livrets de colportage), ces alphabets vont du simple recueil de prières, orné d'une image pieuse, aux alphabets thématiques (arts et métiers, histoire naturelle ou vies de saints), conçus comme de petits dictionnaires illustrés d'une suite de planches hors-texte. Les contraintes d'une fabrication bon marché, mais aussi la logique propre au genre même de l'abécédaire entraînent une utilisation originale de la gravure sur bois. Sous un certain manque de rigueur (absence d'unité stylistique, images incongrues), se cache un système complexe, où les rapports entre texte et image se déclinent selon des modalités très variées.Monaque Antoine.
