    Time Under the Curve: Assessing the Impact of Regional Lead Treatment Center Home Visit on the Length of Exposure in Lead Poisoned Children

    A high proportion of Connecticut residents are at risk of health effects due to lead exposure, especially children under the age of six. The Yale Regional Lead Treatment Center (YRLTC) assists families of children with blood lead levels (BLL) exceeding the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) maximum BLL of 5 µg/dL. YRLTC incorporates home visits of lead-exposed children living in Southern Connecticut to mitigate lead poisoning by emphasizing public health initiatives and social work, rather than using a clinic-only approach. This project aimed to evaluate the merits of this new interdisciplinary approach and its tangible effects on health outcomes. Key informant interviews provided perspectives on the value and themes of home visits. Questions focused on physiological measures of lead poisoning and cognitive development, patient interactions during home visits as well as legal, and logistical challenges to lead abatement.     The purpose of this study is to examine the impression of five towns in Osaka, and to compare the impressions of the busiest quarters in Osaka with Ginza in Tokyo. This study made a survey of the impression of five towns in Osaka Minami, Nanba, Shinsaibashi, Umeda, Abeno on the people who live in the Kansai area. The results showed that each town made the different impression on the people in the Kansai area. There were not in Osaka the busiest quarters that made the same impression as Ginza made

    Characterization And Quantification Of Menthol In Emerging Tobacco Products

    Although menthol is found in many commercial tobacco products marketed in the United States, limited studies have quantified menthol content in emerging tobacco products. Menthol produces a “cooling effect” to the throat by activating the TRPM8 receptors. This effect conceals harsh tastes associated with nicotine and may be contributing to nicotine tolerance in users. This study quantified and compared menthol levels in “heat-not-burn” IQOS HEETS sticks (Philip Morris), conventional cigarettes, and electronic cigarette (EC) refill liquids. Additional compounds responsible for “minty” aromas in EC refill liquids (eucalyptol, menthone, menthyl acetate, l-carvone, methyl salicylate) were analyzed and quantified. Menthol content of Canadian cigarettes purchased before and after a menthol ban in Ontario, Canada, were analyzed and compared with American cigarettes. Analytical methods involved gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for the detection of targeted molecules and gas chromatography with flame ionization detector (GC-FID) for quantification. Characterization and quantification of flavoring molecules are essential for conducting further inhalational toxicity studies and risk assessment of tobacco products

    Generation and compression of an intense infrared white light continuum in YAG irradiated by picosecond pulses

    An intense white light (WL) continuum from 1600 to 2400 nm is generated in a 20-mm-long YAG irradiated by 1-ps, 1030-nm pulses. Long filamentation formed in the YAG is proven to be responsible for the enhancement of the longer-wavelength spectral part of the WL. The WL is compressed down to 24.6 fs ( 3.9 cycles at 1900 nm) after optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification in a lithium niobate crystal near degeneracy, confirming that its spectral phase is well behaved. The pulse compression experiment reveals that the group delay introduced in the WL generation process is dominated by the dispersion of YAG
