Written in exile in Paris in 1937/38, Siegfried Kracauer’s essay on Totalitarian Propagan-da was ultimately rejected by the Institute for Social Research that had Âoriginally commis-sioned it. And yet, the manuscript deserves to be reread for at least three reasons: (1) Kra-cauer’s book-length article develops an original contribution on the concept of propaganda, which he analyzes in aesthetic terms. Building on his Weimar essays, he focuses on the poetic forms and the aisthetic effects of propaganda, which aims at a profound destabilization and disorientation of the subject. Further, this analysis also has intertextual relevance. (2) Zooming in on the imbrication of aesthetics and politics, Kracauer’s approach corresponds most close-ly, perhaps with the Artwork essay that Walter Benjamin was developing during these years, also in Paris, and whose theses on the politicization of art resonate even in the ostensibly apolitical realism of Kracauer’s Theory of Film. (3) Finally, Kracauer’s propaganda analysis, which remained unpublished during his lifetime, points forward to other works on this propa-ganda, on demagogues, “prophets of deceit”, and the culture industry – works that were deve-loped by the Institute of Social Research in subsequent years and remain relevant until today
